Book Notes on the Lepidoptera of America Classic Reprint

Download or read book Notes on the Lepidoptera of America Classic Reprint written by Aug; R. Grote and published by . This book was released on 2015-08-04 with total page 148 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Notes on the Lepidoptera of America Male and Female. Upperside, much the same as in Grapta faunus, Edwards; the preapical oblique dark brown costal band of the primaries is constantly more diffuse, and the succeeding yellowish marks more restricted, than in its congener. Usually there is a third fainter black spot on the interspace above first median nervule. On the secondaries, the terminal dark band is narrower than in G. faunus, and the sub-terminal, interspaceal, yellow-fulvous marks, while deeper in color, are brought nearer to the external margin; within these, the dark color is less intense and shades more rapidly to brownish, than in its congener. All the exserted portions of the external margins on both wings are narrower; this is especially perceivable when comparing the "tails" of the secondaries of the two species together. Underside, paler than in G. faunus, and affords ready distinguishing characters. Basally, the wings are of a rich dark clear brown, marbled with paler shadings nearer the body, and with darker lines inclosing brown elongated patches. Outside of the brown space is a broad whitish band, distinctly covered with fine, short, wavy, transverse, disconnected, brown striae, and shading into the dark wood-brown strigose terminal shade. The discal mark of the secondaries is a white L, entirely surrounded by the dark brown scales of the basal shade. Body and legs much as in G. faunus; tarsi, whitish, paler; antennae notably shorter than in its ally. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book A Revision of Lasionycta Aurivillius Lepidoptera Noctuidae for North America and notes on Eurasian species with descriptions of 17 new species 6 new subspecies a new genus and two new species of Tricholita Grote

Download or read book A Revision of Lasionycta Aurivillius Lepidoptera Noctuidae for North America and notes on Eurasian species with descriptions of 17 new species 6 new subspecies a new genus and two new species of Tricholita Grote written by Lars G. Crabo and published by PenSoft Publishers LTD. This book was released on 2009-12-18 with total page 162 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The moth genus Lasionycta (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae), like several other genera that occur mainly in arctic and alpine areas, are highly sought but rarely encountered by noctuid enthusiasts. The diurnal species are occasionally seen by butterfl y collectors, who manage to get into these areas, but light trapping in these remote habitats is very difficult. The group has eluded a long-needed revision because many species are similar, exhibit a large amount of local and geographical variation, and insufficient material has been available for revisionary work. A large amount of material collected in the past 10 years has finally made a comprehensive revision of Lasionycta possible. Also, most of the species were evaluated using mitochondrial cytochrome c-oxidase (COI) DNA sequences, commonly called barcodes, a relatively new taxonomic tool that has only recently come into common usage. This revision treats the 43 species known to occur in North America, 17 of which are described as new. Three quarters of the North American species are involved in taxonomic changes and five species associated with Pacific Coast beaches are removed from Lasionycta and placed in Psammophila, a new genus. The revision includes 246 color images of adults and genitalia, as well as distribution maps for all species. The results will also be interesting for Palearctic researchers because four species are Holarctic and some of the other approximately 12 Old World species of Lasionycta are mentioned as occurring in Holarctic species complexes. Several Palearctic species are discussed in reference to excluding them from Lasionycta and returning them to the genera Lasionhada, Eriopygodes, and Clemathada.

Book A Field Guide to Moths of Eastern North America

Download or read book A Field Guide to Moths of Eastern North America written by Charles V. Covell and published by McDonald and Woodward Publishing Company. This book was released on 2005 with total page 532 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Moths . . . has long been recognized as the most authoritative introduction to the moths of eastern North America. Intended for nonspecialists, but greatly appreciated by intermediate and advanced users, this book identifies and describes more than 1300 species in 59 families. The 1300 species, which include at least one in each of the 59 families present in the region, are those most likely to be encountered in eastern North America. Introductory chapters describe the anatomy and life cycle of moths and processes of collecting and preparing specimens. For each species, the book includes a description during the adult stage, the range as it was known in 1984, the flight season for adults, their relative abundance, and selected other information. Individual moths are portrayed from above, with wings extended, in 63 plates, many in color, while selected anatomical features, primarily wing shape and venation patterns, are illustrated in 76 black-and-white line drawings and photographs.
