Book excerpt: Excerpt from Notes on the Industries of the United Provinces IN April 1907, the Government of the United Provinces deputed me to enquire into the condition of the local industries and the possibilities of their develop ment. A report based mainly on available written materials, printed and unprinted, supplemented in some cases by personal inquiries and observation, was submitted in the following July. This report was placed before the Industrial Conference that met at Naini Tal in the autumn of last year, and was at the same time communicated to the press. Since then, under the orders of the Government, I have pursued the inquiry by touring through all the industrial centres of the province. I have also had the advantage of going round the principal industrial towns of the Madras Presidency in the company of Mr. A. Chatterton, and have paid short visits to various places in Bengal, the Central Provinces, Western India, Rajputana and the Punjab. The preliminary report has been almost entirely rewritten. An account of the industrial condition and possibilities of the province is now published in the form of these Notes. Some of these industries have existed for centuries and survived great changes in consumption and technology over the last 150 years. In earlier studies, historians of the region focused on mechanized rather than craft industries, arguing that traditional manufacturing was destroyed or devitalized during the colonial period, and that modern industry is substantially different. Exploring new material from research into five traditional industries, Tirthankar Roy s book contests these notions, demonstrating that while traditional industry did evolve during the Industrial Revolution, these transformations had a positive rather than destructive effect on manufacturing generally. In fact, the book suggests, the major industries in post-independence India were shaped by such transformations.
