This book was released on 2018-03 with total page 572 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Catalogue of the Flowering Plants and Ferns of Connecticut Growing Without Cultivation The project of an accurate and authoritative catalogue of all the plants known to grow without cultivation in Connecticut originated among several enthusiastic botanists who understood the value of records founded upon careful study of the flora in the field as well as in the herbarium. To arouse the widest possible interest in the undertaking the Connecticut Botanical Society was organized in January, 1903, for the chief purpose of accumulating and recording this knowledge, and committees were appointed to gather and collate all available data bearing upon this particular line of research. Book The Bryophytes of Connecticut Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Bryophytes of Connecticut Classic Reprint written by Alexander William Evans and published by . This book was released on 2015-08-05 with total page 210 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Bryophytes of Connecticut The plants treated in the present report are largely neglected by collectors, partly on account of their small size and the difficulties encountered in their identification, partly on account of their slight value from an economic standpoint. To the student of botany, however, and especially to the morphologist and taxonomist, they are of exceptional interest. The morphologist finds among them all gradations between simple and more complex types of structure, and is thus enabled to gain some idea of the way in which the higher plants may have been derived from the lower; while the taxonomist obtains from them a series of distinct and attractive genera and species, which offer for his solution many complicated problems in variation and geographical distribution. In presenting to the botanists of Connecticut some account of the work which has been done on the Bryophytes within the state, it is hoped that more interest in this neglected group of plants may be aroused. The report includes a general description of the Bryophytes as a whole and of the six subdivisions or orders into which it seems advisable to divide them. It also contains keys, more or less artificial, to aid in the identification of those species which have been detected in Connecticut. But it makes no attempt to describe or illustrate the genera and species represented, and is not intended as a substitute for the works in which such descriptions and illustrations are to be found. The student who makes a careful study of our Mosses and Hepatics will still find it necessary to use books of this character in order to confirm the determinations made by the keys, but the report should make the work of determination more decisive by indicating which species are to be expected in our region. Book Notes on the Flora of Middle Georgia Classic Reprint

Download or read book Notes on the Flora of Middle Georgia Classic Reprint written by Roland M. Harper and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-23 with total page 36 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Notes on the Flora of Middle Georgia Athens, the county-seat of Clarke County, is situated in that section of the state known as Middle Georgia, a region well de fined geologically from the two newer sections, north and south Georgia. Middle Georgia occupies about one third of the area of the state, and is distinguished by its geological formation being wholly Archaean or metamorphic. My botanical explorations of this region, in the spring and fall of 1895 and 1896, and the Spring of 1897, were confined mainly to the western half of Clarke County, and portions of the neighboring counties of Jackson, Oconee, Walton and Morgan. This territory which I explored lies in the lower foothills of the Blue Ridge, being entirely south of latitude 34n., and east of longitude 83 31' W., and ranging from 500 to 800 feet above sea-level. Taking Clarke County as typical of the surrounding region, its characteristic features of soil, topography, etc., may be briefly de scribed. The predominating soil consists largely of red clay, de rived from the disintegration of the granitic rocks which underlie the surface everywhere in this region and outcrop in many places. Book The Woody Plants of New Hampshire Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Woody Plants of New Hampshire Classic Reprint written by Albion R. Hodgdon and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-23 with total page 68 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Woody Plants of New Hampshire Of the very considerable number of trees and shrubs which are native to other parts of the world and which have been planted in New Hamp shire, only those species have been included which tend to escape and become naturalized or which have been observed to grow under such conditions that they might appear to be native. Shrubs or trees persisting around old deserted houses, cemeteries, etc., are accepted only if they have displayed an aggressive tendency to reproduce either by vegetative means or by seeds. The following brief geographical discussion may make the range-designa tions accompanying each taxon more meaningful. The White Mountains proper occupy an area from central Carroll and Grafton counties north to the Canadian border. The Presidential Range includes the highest peaks and is about in the center of the White Mountain area. These and the Franconia Range to the west of them are of sufficient elevation (above ft.) to have extensive alpine areas above the forest. Occasional small alpine areas occur elsewhere as noted below. Some of the other mountains have rocky summits, probably because the original forest-cover was re moved by fire. South of the White Mountains there are occasional peaks of moderate elevation, of which Mt. Monadnock in southwestern New Hampshire is the best known and highest. The principal rivers are the Androscoggin, Merrimack, Connecticut, and Saco, all of which have apparently served as migration - routes for many kinds of plants. There is, in addition to the above, a considerable number of small rivers emptying into Great Bay and the Piscataqua River in southeastern New Hampshire. The early modification of the Piscataqua River's tributary streams and of the Merrimack by constructing dams undoubtedly altered the vegetation to a considerable degree. This is particularly true of those plants which normally occur near the water - line. In more recent times the high dams of the upper Connecticut River have raised the water level for many miles back of them and thus have provided very uninteresting shores botanically speaking. In general, the flora along the river is much more interesting below the dams. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: DIVDIVMore than 10,000 years ago, people settled on lands that now lie within the boundaries of the state of Connecticut. Leaving no written records and scarce archaeological remains, these peoples and their communities have remained unknown to all but a few archaeologists and other scholars. This pioneering book is the first to provide a full account of Connecticut’s indigenous peoples, from the long-ago days of their arrival to the present day./divDIV /divDIVLucianne Lavin draws on exciting new archaeological and ethnographic discoveries, interviews with Native Americans, rare documents including periodicals, archaeological reports, master’s theses and doctoral dissertations, conference papers, newspapers, and government records, as well as her own ongoing archaeological and documentary research. She creates a fascinating and remarkably detailed portrait of indigenous peoples in deep historic times before European contact and of their changing lives during the past 400 years of colonial and state history. She also includes a short study of Native Americans in Connecticut in the twentieth and twenty-first centuries. This book brings to light the richness and diversity of Connecticut’s indigenous histories, corrects misinformation about the vanishing Connecticut Indian, and reveals the significant roles and contributions of Native Americans to modern-day Connecticut./divDIVDIV/div/div/div

Book Guide to Standard Floras of the World

Book Documents of the Lewis and Clark Expedition

Download or read book Documents of the Lewis and Clark Expedition written by C. Bríd Nicholson and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2018-12-07 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Through its extensive use of primary source materials and invaluable contextual notes, this book offers a documented history of one of the most famous adventures in early American history: the Lewis and Clark expedition. This book is the first to situate the Lewis and Clark expedition within the political and scientific ambitions of Thomas Jefferson. It spans a forty-year period in American history, from 1783–1832, covering Jefferson's early interest in trying to organize an expedition to explore the American West through the difficult negotiations of the Louisiana Purchase, the formation of the "Corps of Discovery," the expedition's incredible journey into the unknown, and its aftermath. The story of the expedition is told not just through the journals and letters of Lewis and Clark, but also through the firsthand accounts of the expedition's other members, which included Sacagawea, a Native American woman, and York, an African American slave. The book features more than 100 primary source documents, including letters to and from Jefferson, Benjamin Rush, and others as the expedition was being organized; diary excerpts during the expedition; and, uniquely, letters documenting the lives of Lewis, Clark, Sacagawea, and York after the expedition.

Book Richard Wright

Download or read book Richard Wright written by Keneth Kinnamon and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2014-11-04 with total page 500 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: African-American writer Richard Wright (1908-1960) was celebrated during the early 1940s for his searing autobiography (Black Boy) and fiction (Native Son). By 1947 he felt so unwelcome in his homeland that he exiled himself and his family in Paris. But his writings changed American culture forever, and today they are mainstays of literature and composition classes. He and his works are also the subjects of numerous critical essays and commentaries by contemporary writers. This volume presents a comprehensive annotated bibliography of those essays, books, and articles from 1983 through 2003. Arranged alphabetically by author within years are some 8,320 entries ranging from unpublished dissertations to book-length studies of African American literature and literary criticism. Also included as an appendix are addenda to the author's earlier bibliography covering the years from 1934 through 1982. This is the exhaustive reference for serious students of Richard Wright and his critics.
