Book The Parish Churches of the Diocese of Canterbury

Download or read book The Parish Churches of the Diocese of Canterbury written by Thomas H. Oyler and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-20 with total page 194 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Parish Churches of the Diocese of Canterbury: With Descriptive Notes The success which has attended the small books 'Notes on the Cathedrals' emboldens the editor to attempt a series on the Parish Churches of England. The first volume is naturally devoted to the Diocese of Canterbury, and by special permission is dedicated to His Grace the Archbishop. It will be noticed that the illustrations are of the exterior of the buildings only, the descriptive notes being more especially devoted to the interior and to the history. For it is the exteriors that help to charm the English landscape, and so often draw from the traveller the exclamation, 'What a delightful old church!' All the Churches are illustrated; for although some of them may be wanting in beauty, there is not one that has not an interest of some sort. Our taste and our love will, of course, be for the Mediaeval building, for the 'ivy-mantled tower, ' or the historic monuments, but it will be a great mistake if we overlook the strikingly beautiful buildings which have been erected in recent years. Thanks are due to those of the Clergy who have supplied valuable information about the buildings. It is to be regretted that exigencies of space prevent the inclusion of much interesting matter. Mr. Oyler has visited every Church, and again regret is felt that for only a part of his notes is there room in the book. A few historical facts have been gleaned from Murray's 'Handbook of Kent, ' Mr. Walter Jerrold's 'Highways and Byways in Kent' (Macmillan), and Mr. Clinch's 'Little Guide to Kent' (Methuen) - all most useful and delightful volumes. The arrangement of the volume is in Deaneries, and as far as possible alphabetical, but the shape of the photographs, or the grouping of united benefices, has on several pages necessitated modification of the plan. In all cases the patron of the living is given. When the name is omitted the gift is with the Archbishop of Canterbury. Five of the Views of Canterbury Cathedral are from the copyrights of The Photochrom Co. All other illustrations have been specially taken by Messrs. De'ath and Dunk, of Maidstone, who have in other ways been of great service in the preparation of the volume. Book The Cathedrals of England and Wales

Download or read book The Cathedrals of England and Wales written by Francis Bond and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-07-15 with total page 528 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Cathedrals of England and Wales: Being a Fourth Edition of English Cathedrals Illustrated The book has been re-illustrated in a much more comprehensive manner, only a few examples of detail being retained from the earlier editions. The exception of the ground plans, the illustrations are from photographs, the sources of which are given in the note of acknowledgment. The more important features of each cathedral are represented, and it is hoped that this will tend materially to elucidate and increase the interest of the text: neither the text, however, nor the illustrations are intended as a sub stitute for personal study of the cathedrals on the spot, which it is the purpose of the book to foster and facilitate. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Cathedrals of England and Wales Of all our great ecclesiastical edifices there is none, with the exception of Westminster Abbey, that is more linked with the events Of English history than the cathedral of Canterbury. It is not merely that it is one of our chief works of art, and Of which we may be justly proud, but it has been the scene of important episodes, and it stands as a memorial of one of the most momentous of them in our annals. For many generations it was regarded as hallowed, and when we consider how opinions change, it might be possible for it to be regarded SO again. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Famous Cathedrals as Seen and Described by Great Writers The western limb of the cathedral is called the nave. The term choir is sometimes loosely applied to the whole Of the eastern limb. Strictly it applies just to that part of the church where the stalls are; and that part, as in St. Al ban's and Norwich, need not necessarily be in the eastern limb at all, but in the crossing and in the easternmost bays of the nave. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Organists Composers of S. Paul's Cathedral The following papers have appeared, at various times, in the columns of The Musical Standard. In response to urgent requests from many persons, including several cathedral organists and musicians of distinction, they are now re-published, with considerable additions, in a collected form. Appended will be found some account of the Cathedral organ and the various alterations and improvements it has undergone from time to time. Short biographical notices of the principal English composers, incidentally alluded to in the body of the work, have likewise been introduced, together with a list of their chief contributions to Church music. Considerable pains have been taken to ascertain the correct dates of birth, death, and appointments of each composer. In some cases it has been found impossible to verify these exactly, and, for such shortcomings, the reader's kind indulgence is asked.
