Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Notes on the Book of Genesis With the exception of the four gospels, I suppose there is no book in the Bible more deeply interesting than the Book of Genesis. It comes to us with all the freshness of God's first book to His people. The contents are varied, highly instructive, and most precious to the stu dent of God's entire book. These Notes are again laid at the Master's feet, in earnest prayer that He would take them up and send them forth under the stamp of His own divine approval. Amen. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Notes on Genesis The incomplete and fragmentary character of the following notes has delayed their appearance in their present shape, and has caused me to hesitate long as to the expediency of publishing them. But the recep tion already accorded to my father's writings has been such as to confirm my own conviction that any authentic record of his thoughts possesses an intrinsic interest and value transcending the mere form in which they are clothed; and I believe that the Notes on Genesis will not be found deficient in those qualities which mark the works already published. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Notes on the d104 of the Book of Genesis: With an Appendix IN the present edition of the 'notes on Genesis' a large amount of new matter has been incorporated into the book. An Introduction has been substituted for Appendix I, and the new edition has been enlarged by the addition of about forty new pages. Many of the notes have been recast and expanded, and many new notes have been added on different matters, generally points which were not. Commented on in the first edition, or inadequately treated. This will be seen in the fuller accounts of the different foreign nations men tioned in Genesis, cf. Chaps. 10, 25. 36, 8, etc. More attention has also been given to the geography of Genesis. The sites of the different places mentioned and other matters apper taining to geography are generally quoted from Dillmann's Genesis 6, Smith's flis/orical Geograplgy, and B'adeker's Pales tine, znd English edition, 1894; so that the information on these points is as far as possible up to date. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Book of Genesis: A Complete Analysis of Genesis With Annotations The first Book of the Bible is called in the Septuagint (the Greek translation of the Old Testament) Gene sis. Genesis means Origin. The Hebrews call it by the first Hebrew word Bereshith. - In the Begin ning. It is the Book of all beginnings. We can trace here the beginnings of creation and everything else, except God, who has no beginning. The Book of Gene sis is the great foundation upon which the entire: revelation of God rests. The marvellous structure of the Bible, composed of the different books, written by different instruments of the Spirit of God at different times, is built upon this great, majestic Book. It is the root out of which the tree of God's revelation has grown. Internal evidences prove the most complete unity, that it is the work of one chosen instrument, Moses, and that it is not of a composite authorship. But more than that, the Book of Genesis establishes the Divine Unity of the Bible. The last Book of the Bible, the Revelation, confirms this. Genesis tells of the origin of all things; Revelation reveals the destiny of all things. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Download or read book The Book of Genesis written by S. R. Driver and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-24 with total page 556 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Book of Genesis: With Introduction and Notes The unexpected death of Dr Driver in 1914 has prevented any further revision of this Commentary, as he has left no materials available for the purpose. It is however worth mentioning that since the ninth edition appeared Dr Driver published a revised edition of his Introduction to the Lite rature of the Old Testament (9th Ed. 1913) and in the Addenda to that volume (pp. Xxvi - xxxiii) will be found a few notes bearing on Genesis, and particularly his last and fullest discussion of the controversy about the value of the Names of' God as a clue to the sources of the Pentateuch. He there refers with approval to articles in the Expositor by Dr Skinner, since republished in book form ('the Divine Names' in Genesis, Hodder and Stoughton and also to the Appendix in the Rev. D. C. Simpson s Pentateuchal Criticism (hodder and Stoughton, which was written at Dr Driver's suggestion and had the benefit of his revision. The ninth edition, of which this is a reprint, consequently represents the final form of this Commentary. The progress of Old Testament Criticism and of Oriental archaeological studies will doubtless modify particular statements in it, but the wide range of Dr Driver's knowledge, the accuracy of his scholarship and the sanity of his judgment cannot fail to secure a permanent value for all his work.
