Book Notes on the Art of House Planning Classic Reprint

Download or read book Notes on the Art of House Planning Classic Reprint written by C. Francis Osborne and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2016-11-11 with total page 118 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Notes on the Art of House-Planning The following pages embody a portion of the notes used with my classes in the Cornell University, and were originally printed in the pages of building. Their reception seemed to indicate that they had encouraged the cultivation of a field left practically untouched, as to detail, since, a generation ago, Professor Kerr put forth his most excellent work, The Gentleman's House. It is hoped that, in this more permanent form, they may stimulate a younger generation of archi teets to embody in their work the principles of good planning. Only the simplest elements of this are, however, here set forth, for it has been thought best not to extend the investigation further at present, since a larger book would have defeated its own purpose. Book The Art of the House Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Art of the House Classic Reprint written by Rosamund Marriott Watson and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-28 with total page 236 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Art of the House Should the inspiration of the moment dietate to you a command for walls light in colour, you must not, having once put your hand to the plough, entertain any idea Of looking back. That would be to ruin all. A fastidious chastity of form and site must be the order Of the day; your pieces of furniture, very refined, very fit, and very few, are to be disposed here and there after anxious premeditation and earnest thought. They must correspond in their design with the spirit Of the wall-papers, or the panelling, and be placed just there (and in no other position than that) where they will tell the most effeetively as patches of a darker tone; or you may choose to set the whole - walls, chairs, tables, and all - in a high key; only remembering that if this be done you must keep just as tight a rein over your fancy as though the plenishing were Of dark wood. A severe elegance scrupulously maintained and con Sistently carried out in every particular, is the main characteristic of this method; the colour Chord, limited though it be, will have an austere sweetness that falls in well with some tempera ments, but a jarring note were disastrous. Book The Art of Classic Planning

Download or read book The Art of Classic Planning written by Nir Haim Buras and published by Harvard University Press. This book was released on 2020-01-28 with total page 497 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "An accomplished architect and urbanist goes back to the roots of what makes cities attractive and livable, demonstrating how we can restore function and beauty to our urban spaces for the long term. Nearly everything we treasure in the worldÕs most beautiful cities was built over a century ago. Cities like Prague, Paris, and Lisbon draw millions of visitors from around the world because of their exquisite architecture, walkable neighborhoods, and human scale. Yet a great deal of the knowledge and practice behind successful city planning has been abandoned over the last hundred yearsÑnot because of traffic, population growth, or other practical hurdles, but because of ill-considered theories emerging from Modernism and reactions to it. The errors of urban design over the last century are too great not to question. The solutions being offered todayÑsustainability, walkability, smart and green technologiesÑhint at what has been lost and what may be regained, but they remain piecemeal and superficial. In The Art of Classic Planning, architect and planner Nir Haim Buras documents and extends the time-tested and holistic practices that held sway before the reign of Modernism. With hundreds of full-color illustrations and photographs that will captivate architects, planners, administrators, and developers, The Art of Classic Planning restores and revitalizes the foundations of urban planning. Inspired by venerable cities like Kyoto, Vienna, and Venice, and by the great successes of LÕEnfantÕs Washington, HaussmannÕs Paris, and BurnhamÕs Chicago, Buras combines theory and a host of examples to arrive at clear guidelines for best practices in classic planning for todayÕs world. The Art of Classic Planning celebrates the enduring principles of urban design and invites us to return to building beautiful cities."

Book The Radford American Homes

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Radford American Homes: 100 House Plans This book contains the perspective view and floor plans of 100 low and medium priced houses, and is a continuation of the work which was begun in The Radford Ideal Homes and which met with such phenomenal success all over the world. In this work, even greater care has been exercised in the selection of original, practical and attractive house designs, such as seventy-five to ninety percent, of the people to-day wish to build. In the drawing of these plans special effort has been made to provide for the most economical constructions, thereby giving the home builder and the contractor the benefit of the saving of many dollars; for in no case have we put any useless expense upon the building, simply to carry out some pet idea. Every plan illustrated will show by the complete working plans and specifications that we give you designs that will work out to the best advantage and will give you the most for your money; besides, every bit of space has been utilized to the best advantage. Book Houses and Gardens Classic Reprint

Download or read book Houses and Gardens Classic Reprint written by Mackay Hugh Baille Scott and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-25 with total page 342 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Houses and Gardens It might be supposed at least that all this ugly building would be attended with some compensation of a practical kind, and that the modern villa would at least possess utilitarian qualifications. But here again one finds that so far from being in any way adapted to the real requirements of its occupants, it is designed in accordance with a tradition which is based on the life and habits of the occupants of a mansion. The best part of its limited space is set apart to impress the neighbours, and the family is confined in some plastered rectangular cell which is already crowded with unnecessary and pretentious furniture. But enough has been said, perhaps, to show that there is an urgent need for reform in the plan Of the average modern house, and, apart from artistic considerations, it is at least desirable that it should be rationally designed. It has Often been urged that a house should express and conform to the special needs of those for whom it is built. But while this is certainly desirable it may be questioned whether houses of special type should be extensively built. A house has to meet the requirements Of many occupants, and it seems reasonable that one should bear in mind in its construction as to how far it is adapted for general demands. In the design Of houses for various clients of moderate means, I have been led to conclude that it is possible to deduce a normal plan which meets the requirements of the average family, and that variants from this constant type of plan are to be found rather in appendages to the plan than in any essential modification of its central features. Instead of a conception Of the house which presupposes the collocation of a number of compartments which in the smaller houses become each too small for comfort, it is suggested that the house rationally planned should primarily consist of at least one good-sized apartment, which, containing no furniture but that which is really required, leaves an ample floor space at the disposal Of Its occupants. Download or read book A Pattern Language written by Christopher Alexander and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2018-09-20 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: You can use this book to design a house for yourself with your family; you can use it to work with your neighbors to improve your town and neighborhood; you can use it to design an office, or a workshop, or a public building. And you can use it to guide you in the actual process of construction. After a ten-year silence, Christopher Alexander and his colleagues at the Center for Environmental Structure are now publishing a major statement in the form of three books which will, in their words, "lay the basis for an entirely new approach to architecture, building and planning, which will we hope replace existing ideas and practices entirely." The three books are The Timeless Way of Building, The Oregon Experiment, and this book, A Pattern Language. At the core of these books is the idea that people should design for themselves their own houses, streets, and communities. This idea may be radical (it implies a radical transformation of the architectural profession) but it comes simply from the observation that most of the wonderful places of the world were not made by architects but by the people. At the core of the books, too, is the point that in designing their environments people always rely on certain "languages," which, like the languages we speak, allow them to articulate and communicate an infinite variety of designs within a forma system which gives them coherence. This book provides a language of this kind. It will enable a person to make a design for almost any kind of building, or any part of the built environment. "Patterns," the units of this language, are answers to design problems (How high should a window sill be? How many stories should a building have? How much space in a neighborhood should be devoted to grass and trees?). More than 250 of the patterns in this pattern language are given: each consists of a problem statement, a discussion of the problem with an illustration, and a solution. As the authors say in their introduction, many of the patterns are archetypal, so deeply rooted in the nature of things that it seemly likely that they will be a part of human nature, and human action, as much in five hundred years as they are today.

This book was released on 2016-09-13 with total page 28 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from How to Select a Plan and and How to Build a House The desirability of building modern houses, especially those of moderate cost, to rent, to sell or to live in, is now very well understood. -but there are many who have given the subject no serious attention, although they have the means with which to build. Such persons make a serious mistake, and they will realize some day with regret that they have paid out for rent more than sufficient to have built desirable houses. There are no real difficulties in the way of building, even by those of no experience whatever, when our drawings, specifications and directions are followed. Book A Book of House Plans

Download or read book A Book of House Plans written by William Harold Butterfield and published by . This book was released on 2015-06-30 with total page 156 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Book of House Plans: Floor Plans and Cost Data of Original Designs of Various Architectural Types, of Which Full Working Drawings and Specifications Are Available To design a small country house possessing artistic and economic features, the construction of which may be accomplished for a minimum amount, is not among the simplest problems of the architectural profession. The most satisfactory solutions are arrived at by a process of elimination, resulting in a compact plan possessing the essential requirements of the average home-builder, and arranged in such a manner that the total area is proportionately divided to best suit the uses for which each unit of the plan is intended. The houses shown on the following pages have been carefully designed to meet the requirements of the average family desiring a house of moderate size and pleasing appearance. They are taken from the actual working drawings or from houses already erected. The aim of the authors has been to emphasize the really essential features and eliminate all that might be considered superfluous or not consistent in a house of moderate cost. Simplicity of plan and exterior treatment means economy but not necessarily ugliness. The success of an architectural design, in a building of any description depends principally upon its proportion, scale and fenestration, and no amount of elaboration can atone for a poorly proportioned building. Bearing all this in mind, we have planned our houses, knowing that the people who will live in them will prefer to have their rooms as large as possible for the price they pay and to have the construction and materials of the best throughout. We know that buildings cost so much per cubic foot or square foot of ground area. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from English House Design: A Review; Being a Selection and Brief Analysis of Some of the Best Achievements in English Domestic Architecture From the 16th to the 20th Centuries, Together With Numerous Examples of Contemporary Design The plan adopted is to state brie y, at the outset, a few general principles to which all good design must conform, no matter upon what style it be founded to pass on to some explanation of the growth and nature of style, and to indicate by a series of notes in comment the application of the general principles laid down to the examples selected for illustration. The examples taken from old work have been chosen for the reason that they are amongst those which have best satisfied the critical test of time, and prove most fruitful of suggestion for present-day practice. Their archaeological interest is, for our purpose, of little importance but so much of an historical sketch is given as is necessary to define and explain their place in English architecture. The difficulty of selection from the mass of good modern houses is, of course, great but though it would be easy to substitute for many of the examples given others of equal merit by 'other designers, the selection included may be taken as reasonably representative of present-day practice. How far the work of to-day will permanently hold its own with the work of the past, time alone can determine. But that it has reached a high level of attainment is a claim which comparison of the two will not fail to support and, indeed, is now universally conceded. Wherever it has been possible and likely to prove serviceable, plans of the houses illustrated are given. A difficulty of the subject has been to avoid questions of detail so that a clear-cut statement of general principles might be given. This difficulty has especially made itself felt respecting the interior of the house. Interior Views appropriate to the various house types are given, but it has not been possible to attempt more than the briefest reference to the subject of interior decoration. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The House Dignified: Its Design, Its Arrangement, and Its Decoration Having no national criterions to guide us, we have been obliged to seek those furnished by older civilisa tions, as have all peoples, for the matter of that, whose history has been parallel to our own. This, then, is not to our discredit. That which is to our dis credit is our tendency to keep following new crazes, trusting to our recently acquired millions to aecom plish that which it has taken others centuries to pro duce. The result has been chaos and confusion, the one dominant note being oftenest one of mere vanity - the vanity of possessions.
