Book Notes on Primitive Man in Ontario Classic Reprint

Download or read book Notes on Primitive Man in Ontario Classic Reprint written by David Boyle and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-12-02 with total page 114 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Notes on Primitive Man in Ontario As an introduction to the following notes on the ethnology and archaeology of Ontario it may not be inappropriate to devote a few pages to a consideration of the much discussed subject - Whence came the Indians? Not for the purpose of proposing any new theory, but simply to show the grounds on which claims are based by those who hold this, that, or the other view. It is tolerably safe to assert that the great majority of those who have given the subject any consideration at all, believe the American aborigines came from Asia, by way of Bering strait. A smaller number think the migration came along a more southerly course from Japan, and others still, that many found their way hither from islands of the Malaysian group to South America and Mexico. On the other hand claims have been set up for the opposite side of the Old World as the source of population. Of these, one that has attracted much attention is based on the fabled existence of the island Atlantis, between the coasts of Africa and America, and one of the latest theories refers to a former land-connection between northern Europe and Greenland, across which the origi nal discoverers of this continent found their way, Greenland itself being at that time a portion of our mainland. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Primitive Man Working upon these data, Prof. Croll asserts that the first of these periods of great eccentricity began years ago, and lasted years; the second began years Since and lasted years; the third commenced years ago and lasted years. This would give us, since the termination of the last glacial era (or eras), years. But it is certain that man of the river-drift period lived in pre-glacial times, and if we accept the conclusion that the most recent glacial era commenced years ago, we must allow not less than years ago as the date of the close of the Pliocene period, and the probable first appearance of man. Other theories which have been proposed to account for the Glacial Age, such as variations in the intensity Of solar radiation, the movement Of the earth from a colder into a warmer region of Space, alteration in the axis of the earth and others, are fully stated and criticized in the twelfth chapter of Sir John Lubbock's Prehistoric Man, as are also investigations into existing deposits and formations with a view to ascertaining the probable antiquity of the stone and bronze ages. Download or read book Primitive Man in Ohio Classic Reprint written by Warren K. Moorehead and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2016-09-26 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Primitive Man in Ohio It is the purpose of our book to do away with certain of these illusions. In attempting this we are aware that a herculean task has been undertaken. But the time has arrived when men prefer facts to ights of fancy. We are therefore quite confident that our material, so carefully collected and thought fully weighed, Will not be cast aside and its place usurped by the rash statements of hasty and incom petent investigators. Why there should be so much speculation and uncertainty concerning the life of our aborigines is inexplicable to us. No question of equal importance could have been more easily deter mined had the early writers given as much care and patience to mound exploration as is given at the present time. Some writers have misrepresented and distort ed field testimony to uphold theories previously formed. As an illustration of this, and of the great damage that it has done, we need but call the atten tion of our readers to the famous Holy Stone of Newark. Book The Early History of Elora Ontario and Vicinity

Download or read book The Early History of Elora Ontario and Vicinity written by John Connon and published by Wilfrid Laurier Univ. Press. This book was released on 2006-01-01 with total page 257 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Elora: The Early History of Elora and Vicinity provides little-known details about the settlement and development of the Elora area in southern Ontario from the earliest settler in 1817. Then, as now, people were drawn to the Elora Gorge and the rocky banks of the Grand River. The book is a compilation of material that appeared weekly in The Elora Express between 1906 and 1909 with some additional material from the 1920s. Connon traces the settlers as they arrive and reports on the development of the town as they acquired a grist mill, a store, a bridge, and inevitably a railway. Rich with genealogical information, this is an important historical document. Introduction by Gerald Noonan.

Book Prehistoric Man Classic Reprint

Download or read book Prehistoric Man Classic Reprint written by Joseph McCabe and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-28 with total page 146 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Prehistoric Man Few phases of the scientific doctrine of evolution have a greater fascination than the long story of the rise of man from his primitive level of stunted savagery to the fulness of modern civilisation. During a period of stupendous length man wandered over the earth without even the rudiments of culture. Our present knowledge puts the dawn of civilisation, in the valley of the Nile and on the heights above the valley of Mesopotamia, at about years ago. But man had then existed on this planet during a period which hardly any competent student would now estimate at less than years. In that long night preceding the dawn of history were slowly shaped the ideas and institutions from which civilisation would eventually issue. To trace the lines of this gradual rise, to restore the forms and the habits of the strange races of men who Spread over the planet, to indicate the causes of their progress or their halting on the upward path, is the aim of the present manual. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Story of Man: From the First Human to Primitive Culture and Beyond One can have little more to say after having written a history Of the world, even as short and limited a one as this. I am ex hausted, and amazed at my foolhardiness. SO many years have I spent On it that I cannot remember all the people who helped me. If I fail to mention anyone who deserves it, my apologies are Of fered. Of those who tried to educate me, four men contributed particularly to what went into the planning and execution Of this volume. The late Charles T. Copeland tried to teach me to write, and the late Earnest Hooton inspired me as he did dozens Of others to make anthropology my career. Eliot Chapple taught me about social anthropology, and William Crozier taught both Chapple and me about scientific method.
