Book Notes on Old Edinburgh Classic Reprint

Download or read book Notes on Old Edinburgh Classic Reprint written by Isabella L. Bird and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02 with total page 40 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Notes on Old Edinburgh My object was to compare a certain section of Edinburgh, both by day and night, with a similar area in the city before alluded to. In company with two philanthropic gentlemen, who did not hesitate to expose these social plague-spots, and guided in one mysterious locality by one of the lieutenants of police, I explored at various times several closes in the High Street, Cowgate, and West Port, going by house-row. In all cases the people were civil and willing to admit us, and few allowed us to depart without expressing a hope that some good would come out of the efforts proposed to be made for them. In many houses only the children were at home, but they answered our questions with such quick comprehension and painfully precocious intelligence that we were not left in doubt as to the circumstances of their parents. It was a dry, warm morning. N 0 rain had fallen for some weeks. There was a rumour of cholera on the Rhine, and under its salutary influence various sanitary precautions, such as lime washing closes and stairs, had been recently resorted to. The district might have looked cheerful had cheerfulness been possible, so great was the contrast between its aspect now and its look on a wet, murky, autumn day. The appearance of the lower part of the High Street was as little pleasant as usual. Knots of men who never seem to move on stared at the passers-by on the South Bridge, bold girls lounged about and chafied the soldiers, careworn women, and little girls hardly less careworn, stood round the well with their pails - some of the last, we learned, having stood there for two and three hours. There were dirty little children as usual rolling in the gutter or sitting stolidly on the kerb-stone; as usual, haggard, wrinkled, vicious faces were looking out of the dusty win dows above, and an air of joylessness, weariness, and struggle hung over all. Truly has this street been named the Via Dolorosa. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Book of the Old Edinburgh Club, 1922, Vol. 11 The next consideration was to determine the preparation and scale of the map. Edgar's published maps were too small for the purpose; later and larger scaled surveys were not accurate enough; and at length it was determined to take the 1851 Ordnance Survey for the basis, and thus to secure accuracy, the earlier surveys of parts altered or cleared away being used to supplement and correct the later. The map thus constructed is over 75 feet long, but it has been reproduced on a reduced. Scale by Messrs. Bartholomew, so that it would not be too bulky for our volume, or unwieldy for the student. Book Traditions of Edinburgh Classic Reprint

Download or read book Traditions of Edinburgh Classic Reprint written by Robert Chambers and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-20 with total page 398 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Traditions of Edinburgh I AM about to do what very few could do without emotion revise a book which I wrote forty-nve years ago. This little xwork came out in the Augustan days of Edinburgh, when (i Jeffrey and Scott, Wilson and the Ettrick Shepherd, Dugald Stewart and Alison, were daily giving the productions of their minds to the public, and while yet Archibald Constable acted as the unquestioned emperor of the publishing world. I was then an insignificant person of the age of twenty; yet, destitute as I was both of means and friends, I formed the hope of writing something which would attract attention. The subject I proposed was one lying readily at hand, the romantic things connected with Old Edinburgh. If, I calculated, a first part or number could be issued, materials for others might be expected to come in, for scores of old inhabitants, even up perhaps to the very oldest, ' would then contribute their reminiscences. The plan met with success. Materials almost unbounded came to me, chiefly from aged professional and mercantile gentlemen, who, usually, at my first introduction to them, started at my youthful appearance, having formed the notion that none but an old person would have thought of writing such a book. A friend gave me a letter to Mr Charles Kirkpatrick Sharpe, who, I was told, knew the scandal of the time of Charles II. As well as he did the merest gossip of the day, and had much to say regarding the good society of a hundred years ago. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Book of Old Edinburgh, and Hand-Book to the Old Edinburgh Street: Designed by S. Mitchell, Aechitect; For the International Exhibition of Industry, Science, and Art, Edinburgh, 1886 When requested by the Executive Council of the first Scottish International Exhibition to write a Descriptive Catalogue of the Old Edinburgh Street of the Exhibition, the honour and trust so unanimously accorded were frankly accepted. Labour was involved, but - the labour was congenial. A Descriptive Catalogue was partly written when the idea - always latent - gathered strength, that a purely antiquarian and technical description of the buildings was suited only to a special and limited class of readers.
