Book Normal Histology Classic Reprint

Download or read book Normal Histology Classic Reprint written by Edward Kellogg Dunham and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-22 with total page 332 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Normal Histology The general plan and scope of this outline of histology are the result of experience in teaching this subject to students of medicine under conditions which require economy of time. In order to accomplish the greatest amount of instruction under these circum stances it seemed necessary to present, early in the course, certain generalizations which might be kept constantly in mind and assist the memory in retaining facts by showing their logical correlation. The broad ideas of almost universal applicability which were chosen for this purpose were first, the conception of the cell as the active constituent of tissues second, the general rule that the ele mentary tissues are composed of cells and intercellular substances, and that their differences depend upon the preportions or characters of those constituents; third, that the structural details of the dif ferent tissues are intimately correlated to their usefulness - i. E., that function and structure are mutually dependent upon each other, being but two aspects of a single device or arrangement; and, fourth, that the ability of tissues to perform active functions is, in the main, roughly proportional to the number or size of the cells entering into their structure. The author believes that his experience has shown that the early introduction of these fundamental ideas has been a distinct aid to the student and it is his belief that such would also be the case no matter to what limits the course of instruction in this subject might be extended. Book A Manual of Practical Normal Histology Classic Reprint

Download or read book A Manual of Practical Normal Histology Classic Reprint written by Theophil Mitchell Prudden and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-26 with total page 138 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Manual of Practical Normal Histology The full course for classes in Normal Histology in this laboratory comprises forty lessons, of from one and a half to two hours each. Students are furnished with microscopes, reagents, and all necessary apparatus, with the exception of razors, slides, cover-glasses, and boxes for the preservation of specimens. So little time is usually at the disposal of medical students for collateral reading, and so necessary is it to occupy as little of the laboratory time as possible in oral descriptions of tissues and methods, that these notes have been prepared with the expectation that students will anticipate each lesson by reading beforehand the brief section devoted to its theme, and thus be ready to commence the practical work of the lesson hour without loss of time. It is not to be expected that epitomized descriptions of structures as elaborate as are many of those with which we have to deal in histology, will be in all cases perfectly clear and intelligible without the aid of figures; but the actual specimens prepared, and the sketches from them which are made in the laboratory by the students themselves, will make good, it is hoped, the lack of illustration in the text. There are many points in this as in every developing science which are still unsettled - opinion in regard to them changing or being modified as new facts and investigations are recorded. These have been treated, for the most part, very briefly in the text, it being left for the supplementary oral instruction to enlarge upon and explain them as the light thrown upon each by new researches may seem to require. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Histology: Normal and Morbid In all his studies he must seek not merely to train his powers of observation; he must endeavor to cultivate his ability to inter pret what he sees; to deduce the processes and causes that have wrought the results he perceives, and to compare those deductions with the conceptions of living things he has already formed, so that his ideas may remain in perfect accord with one another as his grasp of the subject enlarges. By so doing he may hope to create a life like mental picture of the body both in health and during disease. The activities of the body involve changes in the substances of which it is composed. Some of these changes are always destruo tive in character - that is, they result in chemical rearrangements which convert more complex combinations of less stable nature into simpler combinations of greater stability. Such chemical changes, Whether they take place within the body or in external nature, among organic or inorganic substances, are always accompanied by a liberation of energy hitherto locked up or stored in latent or potential form in the compounds of higher complexity. It is this liberated or kinetic energy which is utilized by the bodily mechan ism for the performance of internal or external work. When directed in various ways and operating through different structures, this energy occasions visible movement, appears as heat, etc., or passes again into the latent form in the elaboration of more com plex chemical substances from those of simpler constitution. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A strong grounding in basic histology is essential for all pathologists. However, there had always been a gap between histology and pathology in which histologic information specifically for the pathologist was often lacking. Histology for Pathologists deals with the microscopic features of normal human tissues, from the perspective of the surgical pathologist. This is the only text that uses human (vs. animal) tissues for the histology. It is the best reference in the literature for information on normal histology, and, as such, is essential for all clinical pathologists. Written by pathologists for pathologists, the new edition updates the pathologist's understanding of normal histology up to date with the incremental advances made in the last five years. The 3rd edition has become a "classic" purchased by virtually all residents beginning their pathology training, as well as pathologists in practice. The 4th edition builds on that substantial foundation. The table of contents remains essentially the same with the exception of some changes in authorship.

Download or read book Stigma written by Erving Goffman and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2009-11-19 with total page 206 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The author of The Presentation of Self in Everyday Life analyzes a person’s feelings about himself and his relationship to people society calls “normal.” Stigma is an illuminating excursion into the situation of persons who are unable to conform to standards that society calls normal. Disqualified from full social acceptance, they are stigmatized individuals. Physically deformed people, ex-mental patients, drug addicts, prostitutes, or those ostracized for other reasons must constantly strive to adjust to their precarious social identities. Their image of themselves must daily confront, and be affronted by, the image others reflect back to them. Drawing extensively on autobiographies and case studies, sociologist Erving Goffman analyzes the stigmatized person’s feelings about himself and his relationship to “normals” He explores the variety of strategies stigmatized individuals employ to deal with the rejection of others, and the complex sorts of information about themselves they project. In Stigma, the interplay of alternatives the stigmatized individual must face every day is brilliantly examined by one of America’s leading social analysts. “This short book established the conceptual understanding of stigma that continues to buttress contemporary sociological thinking.” —Sociological Review

Book Diagnostic Gynecologic and Obstetric Pathology

Download or read book Diagnostic Gynecologic and Obstetric Pathology written by Roger A. Reichert and published by Lippincott Williams & Wilkins. This book was released on 2011-12-16 with total page 651 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In covering the topic of gynecologic and obstetric pathology, this book attempts to carve out its own niche midway between an atlas and a traditional textbook. The gross and microscopic images in this atlas are presented exclusively in color, and are supplemented by pertinent clinical information and discussions of differential diagnostic considerations. When deemed appropriate, images of immunohistochemical and special stains are included. To further enhance their visual appeal and the overall learning experience, many images in this book are presented with annotations and/or in composite form, and selected images have been enlarged. This image-intensive textbook also includes numerous Pap smear images and cytologic-histologic correlations. In addition to coverage of pathology of the organs of the female genital tract, brief overviews of the normal histology of these sites are provided as necessary background information. Separate chapters are also devoted to placental and peritoneal pathology. There is an emphasis on diagnostic-related issues pertaining to common lesions and their variants, although classic forms of rare lesions are also presented. In selected instances, recommendations on the processing of gross pathology specimens, discussions regarding the optimal approach for intraoperative consultations, and recommendations on the phrasing of key portions of pathology reports are provided. The 10 chapters of this book are organized by site, and the beginning of each chapter lists the entities discussed and their corresponding page numbers.
