Book Mexican Arch ology an Introduction to the Arch ology of the Mexican and Mayan Civilizations of Pre Spanish America Classic Reprint

Download or read book Mexican Arch ology an Introduction to the Arch ology of the Mexican and Mayan Civilizations of Pre Spanish America Classic Reprint written by Thomas Athol Joyce and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-19 with total page 462 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Mexican Archæology, an Introduction to the Archæology of the Mexican and Mayan Civilizations of Pre-Spanish America The actual area withwhich this book deals is, roughly, that portion of Mexico which lies between the tropic of Cancer and the northern strip of Honduras. It is divided naturally into two portions, a northern and western, and a southern and eastern, by the depression which cuts across the isthmus of Tehuantepec. The natural division corresponds very conveniently with the archaeological; to the north and west lies the seat of Mexican culture, to the south and east, of the Mayan; but it must be remembered that the Maya-speaking people extended at the conquest practically throughout Vera Cruz, though they had by that time fallen under Aztec influence. I propose therefore to divide this book into two corresponding sections, dealing first with the Mexican area, and later with the Mayan. Both from the chronological and cultural points of view the Mayan area should come first, but, as will appear later, we are dependent to so great an extent upon our knowledge of Mexican civilization for our interpreta tion of Mayan archaeology, that it will be more con venient to give the Mexican priority. Book The Archaeology and History of Colonial Mexico

Download or read book The Archaeology and History of Colonial Mexico written by Enrique Rodríguez-Alegría and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2016-06-10 with total page 253 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is an archaeological and historical study of Mexico City and Xaltocan, focusing on the early years after the Spanish conquest of the Aztec empire in 1521. The study of households excavated in Mexico City and the probate inventories of 39 colonizers provide a vivid view of the material and social lives of the Spanish in what was once the capital of the Aztec empire. Decades of archaeological and ethnohistorical research in Xaltocan, a town north of Mexico City, offers a long-term perspective of daily life, technology, the economy, and the adoption of Spanish material culture among indigenous people. Through these case studies, this book examines interpretive strategies used when working with historical documents and archaeological data. Focusing on the use of metaphors to guide interpretation, this volume explores the possibilities for interdisciplinary collaboration between historians, archaeologists, and anthropologists working on this pivotal period in Latin American history.
