One of good quality pear wood is quite satis factory but more elaborate ones can be had. The head of the T square is apt to swell from a true surface where it slides along the edge of the board. This may be corrected by occasionally scraping away the bowed part. The compasses should be the large size supplied with pencil and pen legs and adjustable needle'point. Large dividers usually come with sets but are not very necessary. A set of bow instruments; bow dividers, bow pen and bow pencil, complete the necessary tools. The last two instruments may be' had combined in one instrument whose needle point remains stationary while the pen or pencil leg is twirled around it. This instrument, well made, is, for small circles, preferable to the old type of bow instruments. The pen usually called the right line pen should be about six inches long and with spring blade but no hinge. The catalogs of makers of, and dealers in, drawing instruments offer considerable information regarding the construction and care of instruments. Download or read book Universal Dictionary of Mechanical Drawing Classic Reprint written by George Herbert Follows and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-26 with total page 64 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Universal Dictionary of Mechanical Drawing In a paper on Mechanical Drawing in the Modern Drafting Room read before the Engineers' Society of Western Pennsylvania, in June, 1903, I dwelt with some emphasis upon the importance of uniformity in what I then termed the dictionary features of mechanical drawings. This paper was reprinted by the Society as a pamphlet, and later was published in Engineering xvews and in several other of the leading engineering periodicals both here and in England. The great interest taken in the subject was entirely unexpected. In all, something over seventy letters were received con taining favorable comments, letters not only from all parts of the United States but from Canada, England, France, Holland, and even from New Zealand and South Africa. Among these letters were several from universities and colleges asking if it were not possible to put together a drawing dictionary as a text-book for the use of our schools and col leges. It seemed to be the unanimous opinion that such a dictionary, dealing with mechanical drawing as a language, would be appreciated by teachers, students, and drafting rooms alike. Finally the editor of Engineering jvews suggested that I prepare such a dictionary to be published first in that journal and afterwards as a text-book. This book is the result of that suggestion. It has been written with the hope that the drafting fraternity, as well as teachers and students of mechanical drawing, will accept it, as far as it goes, and use it as a basis for the writing of the language. Book Essentials in Mechanical Drawing Classic Reprint

Download or read book Essentials in Mechanical Drawing Classic Reprint written by L. J. Smith and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-06 with total page 68 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Essentials in Mechanical Drawing This brief treatment of the essentials of mechanical drawing is designed to give instruction in the rudiments of plan drawing as it occurs in everyday life, so that the student will be able to read and understand ordinary drawings and be able to do ordinary mechanical sketching. The book should be of value also to one who is about to take a longer course in drawing, for it aims to correct the common mistakes of the beginner. Where work is given without the regular instruments, it is well to provide the students with small drawing boards about 12 X 18 inches in size, together with a T square. This equipment makes for more rapid and accurate work. The bottom edge of the drawing board can be planed square with the left side so that the T square may be used for both horizontal and vertical lines. The lists of exercises offered are merely suggestive. Where possible it is best to have drawings made from the object itself rather than from another drawing. This is possible even in the drafting room, in institutions where shop work is given, for one can there secure enough joints or other woodwork so that at least every two students will have the object on the drafting table.
