Although, therefore, a general agreement will be found to exist throughout the series, one or two of the writers have made no secret of their holding a much more limited view of the scope and character of Evolution than that represented by the rest. Should exception be taken to this circumstance, we would respectfully submit, that in the settlement of great vital questions it must tend in a much higher degree to healthy, thorough, and impartial discussion when debaters are left perfectly free in every thing save the essentials of the point at issue. In the hope that the following pages may be found helpful by many whose spirits are shadowed by the scepticism of the age, we now commit them. Book Evolution in Christian Doctrine Classic Reprint

Download or read book Evolution in Christian Doctrine Classic Reprint written by Percy Gardner and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-03-11 with total page 258 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Evolution in Christian Doctrine It is not easy to find a name for the modern broad school in the Church. The term liberal has predominantly a political meaning. The term broad may indicate mere laxity and indifference. I have decided boldly to adopt the term Modernist. It also is unsatisfactory, for what is modem is by no means always in the line of progress. And the Roman Curia has attached the term Modernist to a circle of beliefs which seldom if ever was found in the mind of a single thinker: it has created a sort of clothes-horse, on which to hang any views which it regards as dangerous. But we must reflect that nearly all party names were originally the invention of enemies, including even the name Christian; and we may hope to rescue the term Modernist from ignoble use. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Evolution of a Christian The name thus given to the followers of Christ is significant for many reasons. The question has been raised in some quarters as to whether religion is dogma or life. In fact, our religion in the last reduction is neither dogma nor life; it is a Way from Sin into the Kingdom of God. Its bed-rock is truth, its pavement is character, its destination is eternal life. It is a plain Way; as indicated in the prophecy, A highway Shall be there and a way, and it shall be called the Way of Holiness; the wayfaring man, though a fool. Book Christians and Evolution

Download or read book Christians and Evolution written by R J Berry and published by Monarch Books. This book was released on 2014-11-19 with total page 352 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The debate surrounding creation and evolution divides Christians, particularly evangelicals. It has been a stumbling block for young Christians and a point of contention for the new Atheists. Professor R. J Berry assembles a wide range of distinguished contributors, all convinced, committed and orthodox Christian believers, each of whom has undertaken a conceptual journey, based on sound science and careful theology, from a creationist position to one in which God's creation and the processes of evolution are properly and credibly integrated. Christians and Evolution is a luminous volume that offers a pathway for doubters, sceptics and conservative Christians to embrace the overall scientific consensus of the evolutionary approach, while holding solidly and without reservation to the doctrines of God's creation and God's omnipotence. This text is a must-read for anyone interested in the creation v evolution debate.

Book Evolution Scripture and Nature Say Yes

Download or read book Evolution Scripture and Nature Say Yes written by Denis Lamoureux and published by Zondervan. This book was released on 2016-11-15 with total page 209 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Christians throughout history have believed that God reveals himself both through Scripture and nature. The metaphor of God’s Two Books is often used to represent these two divine revelations. The Book of God’s Words is the Bible. Scripture reveals inerrant spiritual truths. These include, the God of Christianity is the Creator of the heavens and the earth, the creation is very good, and only humans are created in the Image of God (Gen. 1:1, 27, 31). The Book of God’s Works is the physical world. Nature declares God’s glory, eternal power, and divine nature (Ps. 19:1; Rom. 1:20). Through the gift of science, our Creator has blessed us with the ability to explore and understand the structure, operation, and origin of his creation. Together God’s Two Books offer us a complementary divine revelation of who created the world and how he created it. A majority of Americans view science and religion as being in conflict, according to the Pew Research Center. Christians and non-Christians alike share this view, yet if this perceived conflict misrepresents the relationship between modern science and Christian faith, then it is both unhelpful and unnecessary today. In Evolution: Scripture and Nature Say Yes, theologian and scientist Denis O. Lamoureux reviews several options for embracing biblical Christianity and findings of science, including biological evolution. Holding to a high view of Scripture alongside an expert appreciation for scientific discovery, Lamoureux further outlines a way to understand passages referring to the natural world in the Bible and also demonstrates how modern science can point toward God. Lamoureux shares his own story along the way, recounting struggles many readers will relate to on his journey toward PhDs in both theology and biology and a fruitful relationship between the two. Topics in this book include: A biblical model of intelligent design in nature based on Psalm 19 and Romans 1. Examination of the ancient science in Scripture, such as a flat earth and 3-tier universe. Comparison of different Christian views on origins—young earth creation, progressive creation (old earth creation), and evolutionary creation. Criticisms of the atheistic interpretation of evolution held by Richard Dawkins and his belief that intelligent design is merely an illusion. Galileo’s peaceful relationship between Scripture and nature, including his view that “the intention of the Holy Spirit [in the Bible] is to teach us how one goes to heaven, and not how heaven goes.” Darwin’s religious beliefs and evidence of the impact that intelligent design had on him throughout his life, along with his claim, “It seems to me absurd to doubt that a man may be an ardent Theist [personal God] and an evolutionist.” Believers wanting to honor God’s Two Books—Scripture and Nature—faithfully and without conflict will find an excellent introduction in Evolution: Scripture and Nature Say Yes.

Book Evolution Illuminating the Bible Classic Reprint

Download or read book Evolution Illuminating the Bible Classic Reprint written by Harriot Mackenzie and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2019-02-13 with total page 420 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Evolution Illuminating the Bible IT is evident that the material views advanced by our leading men of science are causing a class of Christians much anxiety. One object I had in writing this volume was to draw the attention of this class to the fact that our Lord clearly advanced such views, when he defined man in his natural state as a unit of Body and Mind - graphicly classed by Him as that which is born of the Flesh is Flesh, - put in contrast with the new sentiment conversion imparts, defined as one born of the Spirit, Spirit. - ]ohn iii. 6. He was instructing Nicodemus on this vital principle of Christianity, who recognised Jesus as a teacher come from God, and came to be taught by Him. Nicodemus, like many in our day, who are startled by materialism, was greatly amazed when informed of the necessity of being born again before he could see the kingdom of heaven. But such is the case. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book The Prism and the Rainbow

Download or read book The Prism and the Rainbow written by Joel W. Martin and published by JHU Press. This book was released on 2010-06-01 with total page 188 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: God or Darwin? It is one of the most contentious conflicts of our time. It is also completely unnecessary, according to Joel W. Martin, an evolutionary biologist and ordained elder in the Presbyterian Church USA. In this slim but powerful book, Martin argues that it is not contradictory to be a practicing, faithful Christian who accepts the science of evolution. Martin finds that much of the controversy in the United States over evolution is manufactured and predicated on a complete—and sometimes willful—misapprehension of basic science. Science and religion, he says, serve different purposes and each seeks to answer questions that the other need never address. He believes that many of the polarizing debates about evolution distract from the deeper lessons of Christianity and that literal, fundamentalist readings of the Bible require the faithful to reject not just evolution but many of science's greatest discoveries. Just as the scientific explanation of rainbows is not meant to refute the biblical "rainbow" story of God’s promise, evolutionary theory is not a ploy to disavow the divine. Indeed, Martin shows that the majority of Christians worldwide accept the theory of evolution. He urges his fellow Christians to refuse to participate in the intellectually stifling debate over evolution and creationism/intelligent design.
