Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Agamemnon of Aeschylus and the Bacchanals of Euripides: With Passages From the Lyric and Later Poets of Greece With the exception of the Tragedies (only passages of which I had rendered), almost all the Translations in this volume were interspersed in the Lectures which I delivered as Professor of Poetry in Oxford. My object was to enliven Lectures then composed, according to ancient and rigid usage, in Latin: for the perfect familiarity with Latin, which would enable the audience to follow an unbroken Lecture in that language, was by no means general, especially among the younger students. The subject of my Lectures was the History of Greek Poetry. Since that time (between thirty and forty years ago) the Histories of Greek Poetry by Bode, Ulrici, above all the great work of Otfried Muller (translated by the late lamented Sir G. Cornewall Lewis), and the History of Greek Literature by our accomplished countryman, my friend Colonel Mure, had not appeared. Conscious of the deficiencies of my own Sketch, I have consigned my Lectures with unaverted eyes to the flames. The Translations, however, I was not quite so easily content to part with. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Agamemnon of Aeschylus: With Notes, Critical, Explanatory, and Philological, for the Use of Students It is the Editor's intention and hope, with all the expedition which other important avocations will admit of, to edit on the same plan the two remaining portions of the Orestean trilogy, and then perhaps to conclude with the Supplices. And happy indeed will he account himself, if thus attempting in the difficult department of philological criticism, what English Editors of more varied learning and ability have done for the history and geography, the laws, and other matters of general interest in the classics. Book The Agamemnon of Aeschylus

Download or read book The Agamemnon of Aeschylus written by Gilbert Murray and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-02 with total page 110 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Agamemnon of Aeschylus: Translated Into English Rhyming Verse With Explanatory Notes The sense of difficulty, and indeed of awe, with which a scholar approaches the task of translating the Agamemnon depends directly on its greatness as poetry. It is in part a matter of diction. The language of Aeschylus is an extraordinary thing, the syntax stiff and simple, the vocabulary obscure, unexpected, and steeped in splendour. Its peculiarities cannot be disregarded, or the translation will be false in character. Yet not Milton himself could produce in English the same great music, and a translator who should strive ambitiously to represent the complex effect of the original would clog his own powers of expression and strain his instrument to breaking. But, apart from the diction in this narrower sense, there is a quality of atmosphere surrounding the Agamemnon which seems almost to defy reproduction in another setting, because it depends in large measure on the position of the play in the historical development of Greek literature. If we accept the view that all Art to some extent, and Greek tragedy in a very special degree, moves in its course of development from Religion to Entertainment, from a Service to a Performance, the Agamemnon seems to stand at a critical point where the balance of the two elements is near perfection. The drama has come fully to life, but the religion I has not yet faded to a formality. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. But, as the Furies, avengers of Crime, are so near akin to the Fates, and co-operate with these, Aeschylus has a theory too on this subject, which acts an impor tant part in this play, being Often brought forward, especially in the choral Ode which begins 640, and again in the scenes with Cassandra, and in the conclusion Of the drama.
