Book Notes on Brazilian Questions Classic Reprint

Download or read book Notes on Brazilian Questions Classic Reprint written by W. D. Christie and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-12 with total page 338 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Notes on Brazilian Questions The publication of this volume has been unexpectedly delayed till the beginning of 1865. Since all that follows this note was in type, I have received from Rio de Janeiro the second and enlarged edition of the "Cartas do Solitario," of Dr. A. C. Tavares Bastos, published in December, 1863. The author of these "Hermit's Letters" was formerly an official in the Ministry of Marine; he has been, and perhaps still is, a Deputy; he has been lately, in 1864, since the publication of the work from which I am about to quote, appointed Secretary of Legation to the special mission to the River Plate. Dr. Tavares Bastos quotes in his work, from the Diario do Rio, the same account of the difficulties in the way of freedom for the emancipados which, some months later, was used in the House of Commons by Lord Palmerston. Book The Letters of Amerigo Vespucci and Other Documents Illustrative of His Career

Download or read book The Letters of Amerigo Vespucci and Other Documents Illustrative of His Career written by Clements R. Markham and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-04-26 with total page 194 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Letters of Amerigo Vespucci, and Other Documents Illustrative of His Career: Translated, With Notes and an Introduction Porto Seguro in Brazil, published a book at Lima,1 where he was accredited as Brazilian Minister, with the object of rehabilitating the Florentine's character for honesty, by arguing that the story of the alleged voyage in 1497-98 was worthy of credit. This makes it desirable that the whole question should once more be discussed. Varnhagen at least deserves the thanks of all students of the history of American discovery for having published, in an accessible form, both the Latin and the Italian texts of the letters of Vespucci. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For the first time available in English, Licia do Prado Valladares's classic anthropological study of Brazil's vast, densely populated urban living environments reveals how the idea of the favela became an internationally established—and even attractive and exotic—representation of poverty. The study traces how the term "favela" emerged as an analytic category beginning in the mid-1960s, showing how it became the object of immense popular debate and sustained social science research. But the concept of the favela so favored by social scientists is not, Valladares argues, a straightforward reflection of its social reality, and it often obscures more than it reveals. The established representation of favelas undercuts more complex, accurate, and historicized explanations of Brazilian development. It marks and perpetuates favelas as zones of exception rather than as integral to Brazil's modernization over the past century. And it has had important repercussions for the direction of research and policy affecting the lives of millions of Brazilians. Valladares's foundational book will be welcomed by all who seek to understand Brazil's evolution into the twenty-first century.

Book Elizabeth Bishop in Brazil and After

Download or read book Elizabeth Bishop in Brazil and After written by George Monteiro and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2012-09-18 with total page 225 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The life and career of American poet and writer Elizabeth Bishop falls into two distinct segments: the pre-Brazil years and the Brazil years and beyond. A creature of displacement from childhood, Bishop traveled to Brazil at the age of 40 for a two-week trip and unexpectedly stayed for most of the next two decades, a sojourn that marked her work indelibly. This study explores how Bishop's personal and literary experience in Brazil influenced her work culturally, historically, and linguistically, while she was in Brazil and following her return to the United States. Focusing on the "Brazilian" characteristics of Bishop's work as well as some of the major poems she composed before settling in Brazil, this volume offers fresh perspective on one of the 20th century's most celebrated writers.

Book The Making of Brazil s Black Mecca

Download or read book The Making of Brazil s Black Mecca written by Scott Ickes and published by MSU Press. This book was released on 2018-10-01 with total page 332 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One of the few interdisciplinary volumes on Bahia available, The Making of Brazil’s Black Mecca: Bahia Reconsidered contains contributions covering a wide chronological and topical range by scholars whose work has made important contributions to the field of Bahian studies over the last two decades. The authors interrogate and problematize the idea of Bahia as a Black Mecca, or a haven where Brazilians of African descent can embrace their cultural and spiritual African heritage without fear of discrimination. In the first section, leading historians create a century-long historical narrative of the emergence of these discourses, their limitations, and their inability to effect meaningful structural change. The chapters by social scientists in the second section present critical reflections and insights, some provocative, on deficiencies and problematic biases built into current research paradigms on blackness in Bahia. As a whole the text provides a series of insights into the ways that inequality has been structured in Bahia since the final days of slavery.
