Book Notes of Alexander I Emperor of Russia

Download or read book Notes of Alexander I Emperor of Russia written by Michael Klimenko and published by Peter Lang Incorporated, International Academic Publishers. This book was released on 1989 with total page 384 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Alexander I of Russia dreamt his whole life of realizing in his Empire the great ideas of the French Revolution of Human Rights and Freedom. As autocrat Alexander intended to grant his subjects a constitution and a representative government. But being, involved his whole reign, intermittently in love-hate relations with Napoleon, then in European politics and diplomacy, he did not dare to make serious effort in his intentions. He was and remains the most mysterious ruler history has ever known. The question, whether he died in Taganrog in 1825, or somebody else was placed into his coffin, while he went on pilgrimage to expiate his burdened soul for the unwilling participation in the death of his father, lived as starets Fedor Kuzmich and died in 1864 at the age of 87, is still open. The book investigates these and many other problems of his mysterious and glorious reign. Based on original documents, the book is written in the first person.

Book Alexander II and the Modernization of Russia

Download or read book Alexander II and the Modernization of Russia written by Werner Eugen Mosse and published by . This book was released on 1992 with total page 216 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "This work tells the story of the reforming Tsar who modernized Russia after her defeat in the Crimean War. Few spheres of Russian life were untouched by his reforms. In the face of bitter opposition, he liberated millions of serfs and secured their endowment with land. He reformed the Russian courts, created institutions of local self-government, and promoted railway construction and economic development. Both as a westernizer and as the father of its "Industrial Revolution", Alexander II ranks high among the makers of modern Russia. Yet he failed in his efforts to guide his subjects along the path of ordered political evolution. When carefully regulated freedom produced a dangerous ferment of opinion, he reverted to a policy of repression. In the end, the "Tsar Liberator" fell victim to the bomb of an assassin; the forces he had unwittingly helped to release prepared Russia for an age of revolution. This study has been updated with a new introduction."--Bloomsbury Publishing.
