Book excerpt: The New York Times bestselling Arc of the Scythe series continues with “captivating…thrilling” (School Library Journal) stories that span the timeline. Storylines continue. Origin stories are revealed. And new Scythes emerge! There are still countless tales of the Scythedom to tell. Centuries passed between the Thunderhead cradling humanity and Scythe Goddard trying to turn it upside down. For years, humans lived in a world without hunger, disease, or death with Scythes as the living instruments of population control. Neal Shusterman—along with collaborators David Yoon, Jarrod Shusterman, Sofía Lapuente, Michael H. Payne, Michelle Knowlden, and Joelle Shusterman—returns to the world throughout the timeline of the Arc of a Scythe series. Discover secrets and histories of characters you’ve followed for three volumes and meet new heroes, new foes, and some figures in between. Gleanings shows just how expansive, terrifying, and thrilling the world that began with the Printz Honor–winning Scythe truly is.

Book excerpt: Gleanings In Genesis is a message of meditation based on the Bible and written by Arthur Walkington Pink was born in Nottingham, England, to a corn merchant, a devout non-conformist of uncertain denomination, though probably a Congregationalist. Otherwise, almost nothing is known of Pink's childhood or education except that he had some ability and training in music. As a young man, Pink joined the Theosophical Society and apparently rose to enough prominence within its ranks that Annie Besant, its head, offered to admit him to its leadership circle.[4] In 1908 he renounced Theosophy for evangelical Christianity. Desiring to become a minister but unwilling to attend a liberal theological college in England, Pink very briefly studied at Moody Bible Institute in Chicago in 1910 before taking the pastorate of the Congregational church in Silverton, Colorado. In 1912 Pink left Silverton, probably for California, and then took a joint pastorate of churches in rural Burkesville and Albany, Kentucky. In 1916, he married Vera E. Russell (1893–1962), who had been reared in Bowling Green, Kentucky. Pink's next pastorate seems to have been in Scottsville. Then the newlyweds moved in 1917 to Spartanburg, South Carolina, where Pink became pastor of Northside Baptist Church. By this time Pink had become acquainted with prominent dispensationalist Fundamentalists, such as Harry Ironside and Arno C. Gaebelein, and his first two books, published in 1917 and 1918, were in agreement with that theological position. Yet Pink's views were changing, and during these years he also wrote the first edition of The Sovereignty of God (1918), which argued that God did not love sinners and had deliberately created "unto damnation" those who would not accept Christ. Whether because of his Calvinistic views, his nearly incredible studiousness, his weakened health, or his lack of sociability, Pink left Spartanburg in 1919 believing that God would "have me give myself to writing." But Pink then seems next to have taught the Bible with some success in California for a tent evangelist named Thompson while continuing his intense study of Puritan writings. In January 1922, Pink published the first issue of Studies in the Scriptures, which by the end of the following year had about a thousand subscribers and which was to occupy most of his time for the remainder of his life and become the source for dozens of books, some arranged from Studies articles after his death. In 1923 Pink suffered a nervous breakdown, and he and his wife lived with friends in Philadelphia until he regained his health. In 1925, the Pinks sailed to Sydney, Australia, where he served as both an evangelist and Bible teacher at the Ashfield Tabernacle. But his impolitic preaching of Calvinist doctrine resulted in a unanimous resolve of the Baptist Fraternal of New South Wales not to endorse him. From 1926 to 1928, Pink served as pastor of two groups of Strict and Particular Baptists.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The author, Joan Poggi Alessandria, a devout Christian, decided to collect and preserve one-line expressions for more than fifty years. She felt the story of Ruth was a classic example of love and joy. Ruth was widowed early in her marriage and decided to stay with her mother-in-law, contrary to the custom of returning to her original home. The time for harvesting was at hand and since she was living with her mother-in-law, Ruth decided to glean grain during harvest time. She asked permission to follow behind the harvesters to glean (pick up) grain that fell on the ground. They gladly gave permission and added to her basket. This story exhibits the love and caring Ruth experienced when she married into her new home. Her lineage led to David, who became Israel's king. The story of Ruth is a good example of love, devotion, and kindness that filled Joan's life. Read the single line expressions and find peace, love, and humor.

Book Gleanings from an Unplanned Life

Download or read book Gleanings from an Unplanned Life written by James L. Buckley and published by Isi Books. This book was released on 2006 with total page 308 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "I was born in an elevator in New York City's Women's Hospital in the early hours of March 9, 1923. That was the first of a series of unplanned, unanticipatable events that have shaped my life. It was also a rather unceremonious way to enter the world. I wouldn't have entered it at all, however, had it not been for an allergy gene that caused my paternal grandfather, who was beset by asthma, to abandon Canada for the starker landscape of south Texas. At least it seems unlikely that my father would have courted my New Orleans mother if he had been reared in Canada." "I grew up in a small rural community located in the northwest corner of Connecticut beyond commuting range from anywhere. I loved the life there; and while bobbing around the Pacific as a naval officer in World War II, I decided on a career as a country lawyer. After four years learning the trade at a New Haven law firm in preparation for a move to the country, I was lured away by my father and found myself working for a family business headquartered in New York City. Then through a series of wildly improbable circumstances, beginning with the decision of my brother Bill to run for the office of mayor of New York City on the strict understanding that he could not win, I have found myself among the very few who have served in high positions in all three branches of the federal government; in my case, as a senator, an under secretary of state, and, most recently, as an appellate judge."

Book excerpt: In this series of studies we do not propose to confine ourselves to the petitionary prayers of the apostle, but rather take in a wider range. In Scripture "prayer" includes much more than making known our requests to God, and this is something which His people need reminding of, and some of them instructing in, in these days of superficiality and ignorance. The very verse that presents the privilege of spreading our needs before the Lord emphasizes this very thing: "In every thing by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known unto God" (Phil. 4:6). Unless gratitude be expressed for mercies already received and thanks be given for granting us the continued favor of petitioning our Father, how can we expect to obtain His ear and receive answers of peace! Yet prayer, in its highest and fullest sense, rises above thanksgiving for gifts vouchsafed: the heart is drawn out in contemplating the Giver Himself so that the soul is prostrated before Him in worship and adoration.
