Book A Bibliography of the Writings of Jonathan Swift

Download or read book A Bibliography of the Writings of Jonathan Swift written by Herman Teerink and published by University of Pennsylvania Press. This book was released on 2016-11-11 with total page 488 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This work is an analytic bibliography of the writings of Jonathan Swift, containing a listing of every known edition or issue of Swift's work down to the year 1814 (except for the section "Biography and Criticism" which extends from 1709 to 1895). In this revised edition, Herman Teerink has added full collations of the works referred to. In addition, the titles of many 18th century mutations or parodies of Swift have been included together with works which allude to Swift or his writings. Arthur H. Scouten, a University of Pennsylvania professor of English and author of many bibliographical articles on Swift, who has carried on Dr. Teerink's work and prepared this volume for press, has consulted 18th century scholars and bibliographers. With their advice, he has kept the original Teerink numbers, since they are the common reference numbers among Swift scholars and are listed in dealers' catalogues. Because the new material and arrangement put these numbers out of order, they have been listed in a table at the beginning of the book with all the pages they appear on. So that they will not have to be sought throughout the entire volume, all the Faulkner editions have been placed together and all the printings of Gulliver's Travels have been collected in one section, where they are arranged chronologically by country. A full physical description of all important books and pamphlets, including those discovered since 1937 (the first edition), has been provided. The work has been brought up-to-date with the bibliographical findings of Swift scholarship of the past twenty-five years. A number of pieces apocryphally attributed to Swift have been deleted or placed in the "Doubtful" section. Finally, entries of books and pamphlets containing contemporary comment on a work by Swift have been placed where Swift's work itself is entered. This book is especially rich in its listings of translations of Swift's works into foreign languages. Also, since the first edition (A Bibliography of the Writings in Prose and Verse of Jonathan Swift, D.D.) has long been out of print, this volume will be invaluable to book dealers, bibliophiles, and scholars, teachers, and students of English literature.

This book was released on 1971-07-02 with total page 1698 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: More than fifty specialists have contributed to this new edition of volume 2 of The Cambridge Bibliography of English Literature. The task of the new contributors has been to revise and integrate the lists of 1940 and 1957, to add materials of the following decade, to correct and refine the bibliographical details already available, and to re-shape the whole according to a new series of conventions devised to give greater clarity and consistency to the entries.

Book A Bibliography of the Writings of Jonathan Swift Classic Reprint

Download or read book A Bibliography of the Writings of Jonathan Swift Classic Reprint written by Herman Teerink and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-11 with total page 488 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Bibliography of the Writings of Jonathan Swift The revisions and additions which Dr. Teerink has made in the present work are as follows: (1) He has provided full physical de scriptions for all important books and pamphlets. (2) He has brought the work up to date by including the bibliographical find ings of Swift scholarship during the past twenty-five years and by listing books and pamphlets which he had not seen or known about in 1937. (3) He has removed a considerable number of pieces attributed to Swift, either by dropping them or by relegating them to the section entitled Doubtful. (4) He has detached books or pamphlets containing several pieces from Collected Works and placed them in other sections. (5) He has transferred entries of works containing some contemporary comment on a work by Swift from the end of the book to where the work by Swift has been entered. These are indeed substantial contributions and would seem to justify a second verdict from Prince Posterity. A statement needs to be made concerning the nature and extent of the editorial work done by Professor Scouten. He has verified all of the physical descriptions of the books and pamphlets that were contained in the Teerink Collection, now in the Library of the University of Pennsylvania, and has made minor reforms in using bibliographical symbols where Dr. Teerink gave a lengthier verbal account. In order to hold the work to one volume, he has arbitrarily cut off all entries after Sir Walter Scott's edition of 1814 (except under Biography and Criticism, where the entries extended to He has completed the replacement of contemporary criticism begun by Dr. Teerink. He has assigned numbers to new entries established by Dr. Teerink, has provided a table showing the location of all entries, and has made an index. He has silently omitted entries of some works not belonging in the Swift canon, particularly the John Bull pamphlets. In only one place has he re vised any entries; in the light of new information, he has rearranged those for Verses on the Death of Dr. Swift. Book Swift the Book and the Irish Financial Revolution

Download or read book Swift the Book and the Irish Financial Revolution written by Sean D. Moore and published by JHU Press. This book was released on 2010-10-15 with total page 286 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Winner, 2010 Donald Murphy Prize for a Distinguished First Book, American Conference on Irish Studies Renowned as one of the most brilliant satirists ever, Jonathan Swift has long fascinated Hibernophiles beyond the shores of the Emerald Isle. Sean Moore's examination of Swift's writings and the economics behind the distribution of his work elucidates the humorist's crucial role in developing a renewed sense of nationalism among the Irish during the eighteenth century. Taking Swift's Irish satires, such as A Modest Proposal and the Drapier's Letters, as examples of anticolonial discourse, Moore unpacks the author's carefully considered published words and his deliberate drive to liberate the Dublin publishing industry from England's shadow to argue that the writer was doing nothing less than creating a national print media. He points to the actions of Anglo-Irish colonial subjects at the outset of Britain's financial revolution; inspired by Swift's dream of a sovereign Ireland, these men and women harnessed the printing press to disseminate ideas of cultural autonomy and defend the country's economic rights. Doing so, Moore contends, imbued the island with a sense of Irishness that led to a feeling of independence from England and ultimately gave the Irish a surprising degree of financial autonomy. Applying postcolonial, new economic, and book history approaches to eighteenth-century studies, Swift, the Book, and the Irish Financial Revolution effectively links the era's critiques of empire to the financial and legal motives for decolonization. Scholars of colonialism, postcolonialism, Irish studies, Atlantic studies, Swift, and the history of the book will find Moore's eye-opening arguments original and compelling.
