Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the first book to discern and spell out the fascinating coalescence of churches in America today. Drawing on mainline Protestantism, the newer evangelicalism, and Roman Catholicism, this new community, or "community of communities," may be called a "public church" because it is particularly sensitive to the public order and to the interplay of its members as citizens and church people. In a world of increasing interreligious tensions and in an America growing weary of pluralism and freedom, the public church both fills a void and counters trends at home and abroad. Grounded in an historical understanding of the Christian churches in America, The Public Church draws on biblical, theological, and political motifs to offer a model for self-understanding and mission in the years ahead. It discusses the nature of the public church, its relation to the individual traditions from which it springs, its continuing reliance on the local congregation, its relation to the New Christian Right, and the political balance between left and right that must be maintained if the public church is to grow even more effective as a religious force and as a humane venture. In short, the book is an analysis of American Christianity in its newest and most exciting phase.

Book A New Dictionary of Americanisms

Download or read book A New Dictionary of Americanisms written by Sylva Clapin and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-09 with total page 600 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A New Dictionary of Americanisms: Being a Glossary of Words Supposed to Be Peculiar to the United States and the Dominion of Canada A very dull man, and a pertinacious reader - the terms are by no means incompatible - is said to have had Johnson's Dictionary lent to him by some mischievous friend as an interesting new work, and to have read it through from beginning to end, quite unconscious that he was doing anything unusual. He observed, when he returned it, that the author appeared to him a person of considerable information, but that his style was slightly unconnected. The remark had a good deal of truth in it, for a dictionary is not bad reading on the whole. It is much more endurable than a good many of what are called lighter books, and not much more unconnected. What is an Americanism? In a good many instances the name is given to some archaism belated, or some English provincialism that has worked its way into general acceptance in the United States. It is usual to object, when expressions of either kind are classed by. some one as Americanisms, that they are nothing of the kind, which, though in strictness true enough, is a little unpractical; for surely, when words that have become obsolete in the mother country, or are merely "local" here and there, find themselves in wide or universal popularity in America, it is indeed convenient to class them as what they have practically become - Americanisms. Such words, for instance, as shyster, meeching, etc., are for all practical purposes Americanisms now, and are best classed and defined therewith. If we reject them, we must reject also such characteristic words as boss, stoop, portage, etc. Carry it far enough, and we would have hardly anything left but neologisms. Book excerpt: Longlisted for the 2019 Center for Fiction First Novel Prize, Ryan Chapman’s “gritty, bracing debut” (Esquire) set during a prison riot is “dark, daring, and laugh-out-loud hilarious…one of the smartest—and best—novels of the year” (NPR). A largescale riot rages through Westbrook prison in upstate New York, incited by a poem in the house literary journal. Our unnamed narrator, barricaded inside the computer lab, swears he’s blameless—even though, as editor-in-chief, he published the piece in question. As he awaits violent interruption by his many, many enemies, he liveblogs one final Editor’s Letter. Riots I Have Known is his memoir, confession, and act of literary revenge. His tale spans a childhood in Sri Lanka, navigating the postwar black markets and hotel chains; employment as a Park Avenue doorman, serving the widows of the one percent; life in prison, with the silver lining of his beloved McNairy; and his stewardship of The Holding Pen, a “masterpiece of post-penal literature” favored by Brooklynites everywhere. All will be revealed, and everyone will see he’s really a good guy, doing it for the right reasons. “Fitfully funny and murderously wry,” Riots I Have Known is “a frenzied yet wistful monologue from a lover of literature under siege” (Kirkus Reviews).
