Book excerpt: Excerpt from Notes and Outlines of Topics in the History of Education These notes and outlines are not published, but merely printed for use in the classes studying the History of Education in the Michigan State Normal School. It has been found that such outlines save much "note-taking," and much time otherwise occupied in giving references and suggestions. The references are confined, except in a very few cases, to works accessible to students in the library of the school. Occasionally additional references are given upon special topics as they may be found of advantage. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Download or read book Outlines of the History of Education Classic Reprint written by William B. Aspinwall and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-13 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Outlines of the History of Education This little volume of studies has been prepared as a guide to the study of the History of Education for students in col leges and normal schools, with the hope that from out of the maze of facts and events which surround and obscure the sub ject, they may by its aid gain a clearer understanding of the development of educational thought and practices. Most books that deal with this broadest of historical subjects do not marshal the facts contributing to progress in education so that a definite tendency or purpose or result can be discerned. As a matter of value and profit, it is not so important to the student to know the facts as it is to know the bearing of the facts upon the movement, to understand their dependence upon what has gone before as well as upon the actual conditions surrounding them and to see their influence upon the develop ment of the movement. We all know that any type of edu cational practice is but the outward expression of the thoughts and ideals and purposes which guide one generation in the rearing of the next, while these thoughts, ideals, and purposes are, in their turn, born of the national life and civilization in which they have matured. Now, it is always a di cult thing for the student to pick out the essential and contributing facts and to discover their meaning, and usually, working by himself, he either fails to get very much true significance from them or else he gets it at very great expense of thought and efi'ort. My experience in teaching the History of Education has. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Outlines of Educational History Classic Reprint

Download or read book Outlines of Educational History Classic Reprint written by Jerome Allen and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-22 with total page 56 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Outlines of Educational History Probably the most comprehensive idea of what correct education should do was expressed by Bishop Temple, who said that, It is the power whereby the present ever gathers into itself the results of the past, and trans forms the human race into a colossal man whose life reaches from the creation to the Day of Judgment. The successive generations of men are days in this man's life The discovery of inventions which characterized the different epochs of the world's history are his works. The creeds and doctrines, the opinions and principles of the successive ages, are his thoughts. The state of so ciety at different times forms his manners. He grows in knowledge, in self-control, in visible size, just as we do, and his education is in the same way, and for the same reason, precisely similar to ours. Pascal expressed the same thought when he said, The entire succession of man through the whole course of ages must be regarded as one man, always living and incessantly learning. These broad conceptions of educational processes are essentially modern, and the more they take possession of the minds of the people, the more and more will it be realized that education does not consist in following dogmatic courses of study, memorizing little understood statements, or mastering set tasks, but rather the joyous and free exercise of all the human powers in the search for truth. The student or teacher who crams into his mind a mass of facts, names, and dates, simply for the sake of passing an examination, defeats entirely the purpose of those authorities who have made this study a professional requirement; such student has memorized a mass of information of less positive value as such than would be the names of all the post-offices in the State in which he lives. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Outlines of the History of Education: For Teachers' Training Classes and All Who Desire an Elementary Knowledge of the Subject The ideal sought after in education was the perfect man. Ye Shall be holy, for I the Lord your God am holy! Therefore shall ye lay up these my words in your heart and in your soul, and bind them for a Sign upon your hand, that they may be as frontlets between your eyes. And thou Shall write them upon the door-posts of thine house and upon the gates. It would appear from this that the ability to read and write was compulsory. Besides the schools conducted by the par ents, there were the schools of the prophets, presided over by venerable and able men. These were for the study of medicine, poetry and law. Download or read book Outlines of the History of Education written by W. D. Johnson and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-06-26 with total page 116 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Outlines of the History of Education: For Teachers' Training Classes and All Who Desire an Elementary Knowledge of the Subject When called upon to instruct a class in the history of education in a New York State training class, I could find no book covering all requirements in the subject by the Department of Public Instruction. I found many books which contain satisfactory information on many topics in the training class syllabus, while some topics could be found discussed in the largest encyclopedias, only. When the pupil prepared his lessons from these numerous and exhaustive treatises, he often wasted time by reading much not essential and often failed to understand what he read. After three years of careful reading, I have succeeded in compiling notes on the subject for my class. These notes were dictated to my last class. The final examination was readily passed. Believing from this experience and from the expressions of other teachers of training classes that these notes may be of service to other pupils, I venture to have the notes published. It is the wish of the author that this volume may be received in the spirit in which it is sent out. The book is intended to be a guide, only, to the study of the history of education. I find that a pupil comprehends a subject very much more easily and readily, if he begins the study of its outlines, such as this volume is intended to be on the History of Education. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Sketches From the History of Education It will be remembered that Luther placed a high estimate on individual conscience as the ulti mate arbiter of the actions of men, and on the consequent desirability of seeing with one's own eyes rather than with the eyes of others. This led him of necessity to the need of training the intellect and the will in order that they might serve conscience aright both in err abling it to see clearly the ways and means and in securing obedi ence to its decisions. Hence the high estimate placed by him on education as the chief and primary concern of the home, the church and the state. Book Notes on the Science and Art of Education Classic Reprint

Download or read book Notes on the Science and Art of Education Classic Reprint written by William Noetling and published by . This book was released on 2015-06-30 with total page 214 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Notes on the Science and Art of Education I have for some years dictated my instructions on the science and art of teaching, in the form of notes, suggestions, and hints, to the junior class of this school; but a desire has been expressed by students and others to have the work in a more convenient shape for preservation and use, and to enable the many teachers who do not have the advantages of normal instruction to avail themselves of its helps. In compliance with this desire I have prepared the notes for publication: They do not, however, constitute a methodical or a complete treatise upon pedagogics, but only thoughts and suggestions for prospective teachers and for beginners in school-room work. Every subject has been treated with as much fullness, as well as brevity, as my experience has shown necessary. To subjects in which beginners need most help I have given more space than to others; this accounts for the disproportion in the number of pages devoted to different subjects. The matter will be found in harmony with the best in education and teaching, and presented, it is hoped, with a sufficiency of explanation to make it intelligible to beginners. Repetitions occur here and there, wherever it is believed they will be serviceable to those for whom the book is intended.
