Book excerpt: Supplement to Collier's 'The works of Shakespeare : the text regulated by the recently discovered folio of 1632, containing early manuscript emendations : with a history of the stage, a life of the poet, and an introduction to each play,' also known as the Perkins folio. Collier claimed to have discovered extensive new manuscript emendations to Shakespeare's folio of 1632 in a 17th-century hand, which he published in 'Notes and emendations to the text of Shakespeare's plays.' After examining the manuscript, scholars at the British Museum proclaimed it to be a 19th-century forgery.

Download or read book Profiling Shakespeare written by Marjorie Garber and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2008-03-25 with total page 364 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The title of this collection, Profiling Shakespeare, is meant strongly in its double sense. These essays show the outline of a Shakespeare rather different from the man sought by biographers from his time to our own. They also show the effects, the ephemera, the clues and cues, welcome and unwelcome, out of which Shakespeare's admirers and dedicated scholars have pieced together a vision of the playwright, whether as sage, psychologist, lover, theatrical entrepreneur, or moral authority. This collection brings together classic pieces, hard-to-find chapters, and two new essays. Here, Garber has produced a book at once serious and highly readable, ranging broadly across time periods (early modern to postmodern) and touching upon both high and popular culture. Contents: Preface 1. Shakespeare's Ghost Writers 2. Hamlet: Giving Up the Ghost 3. Macbeth: The Male Medusa 4. Shakespeare as Fetish 5. Character Assassination 6. Out of Joint 7. Roman Numerals 8. Second-Best Bed 9. Shakespeare's Dogs 10. Shakespeare's Laundry List 11. Shakespeare's Faces 12. MacGuffin Shakespeare 13. Fatal Cleopatra 14. What Did Shakespeare Invent? 15. Bartlett's Familiar Shakespeare
Download or read book Shakespeare s Lives written by Samuel Schoenbaum and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 1991 with total page 658 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume presents a study of the changing images and differing ways that the life of English poet and playwright William Shakespeare (1564-1616) has been interpreted throughout history. The author takes readers on a tour of the countless myths and legends which have arisen to explain the great dramatist's life and work, bringing the story right up to 1989. He reconstructs as much of the elusive author's life as possible, considering his family history, his economic standing, and his reputation with his peers; the Shakespeare who emerges may not always be the familiar one.

Book excerpt: Always leave a story better than you found it, or as Spedding once said: "When a thing is asserted as a fact, always ask who first reported it, and what means he had of knowing the truth." Taking this quotation under advisement allowed us to create this work, leaving some space on how old Ministers used to look upon suspicion as good evidence or even considering Sir William Cecil's saying that "it was as necessary that treason should exist, as that the nation should be preserved". But why this was so evident in those times was because when men stepped into some position of Office, they retired from general society and confined themselves to a limited circle, no longer acknowledging the free observations of their acquaintances or looking at objects at first hand, but as through a secondary telescope. A 'personal collision with mankind' ceased for them as they turned implicitly to their secretaries and clerks. Hence raised a multitude of mistakes that was the frequent cause why men, who had been very good politicians out of Office, had made so sorry a figure in Office. And many are the persons who could do nothing whatever without a plot. They could hardly hang their hats upon a peg. They would even organize a plan for two years, which shall have no other importance but to dine with the squire of a neighbouring parish. It was such concepts of life that made all cunning persons superficial ones: there was never one exception, though there were short cuts taken, as for example when Henry VIII., had declared Elizabeth I., illegitimate and an Act passed the two Houses to that effect. When that Queen came to the throne, it was taken into consideration to repeal that Act, but "No!" said Sir Nicholas Bacon, 'the Crown takes away all defects. Such is the old law and we will act upon it. It is wise to close a festered wound." According to Bacon's maxim, whoever acquired a Crown, no matter by what means, had a right to it.
