Book excerpt: Aboriginal approaches to the naming of places across Australia differ radically from the official introduced Anglo-Australian system. However, many of these earlier names have been incorporated into contemporary nomenclature, with considerable reinterpretations of their function and form. Recently, state jurisdictions have encouraged the adoption of a greater number of Indigenous names, sometimes alongside the accepted Anglo-Australian terms, around Sydney Harbour, for example. In some cases, the use of an introduced name, such as Gove, has been contested by local Indigenous people. The 19 studies brought together in this book present an overview of current issues involving Indigenous placenames across the whole of Australia, drawing on the disciplines of geography, linguistics, history, and anthropology. They include meticulous studies of historical records, and perspectives stemming from contemporary Indigenous communities. The book includes a wealth of documentary information on some 400 specific placenames, including those of Sydney Harbour, the Blue Mountains, Canberra, western Victoria, the Lake Eyre district, the Victoria River District, and southwestern Cape York Peninsula.

Book excerpt: Accurate, high-resolution fire behavior prediction is a critical component of fire management decision-making before and during fires. Prometheus is a deterministic fire growth simulation model that was developed to help fire managers to understand the probable consequences of their decisions. It uses spatial input data on topography (slope, aspect, and elevation), fuel types, and weather to simulate fire growth by applying Huygens principle of wave propagation to the rate-of-spread predictions from the Canadian Forest Fire Behavior Prediction System of the Canadian Forest Fire Danger Rating System. This approach produces detailed fire perimeters at user-specified display time step intervals. Each active vertex along the perimeter has corresponding fire behavior output. Exported fire perimeters are compatible with geographic information systems. Additionally, three interpolation techniques are available to produce optional raster fire behavior outputs. This report documents the structure of the Prometheus model and an assessment of its performance. The report includes a general discussion of approaches to the modeling of fire growth simulation and explains the vector propagation technique used in Prometheus. The limitations and assumptions of applying the model, as well as the most appropriate directions for future research, are also discussed.

Book excerpt: The entire Australian continent was once covered with networks of Indigenous placenames. These names often evoke important information about features of the environment and their place in Indigenous systems of knowledge. On the other hand, placenames assigned by European settlers and officials are largely arbitrary, except for occasional descriptive labels such as 'river, lake, mountain'. They typically commemorate people, or unrelated places in the Northern hemisphere. In areas where Indigenous societies remain relatively intact, thousands of Indigenous placenames are used, but have no official recognition. Little is known about principles of forming and bestowing Indigenous placenames. Still less is known about any variation in principles of placename bestowal found in different Indigenous groups. While many Indigenous placenames have been taken into the official placename system, they are often given to different features from those to which they originally applied. In the process, they have been cut off from any understanding of their original meanings. Attempts are now being made to ensure that additions of Indigenous placenames to the system of official placenames more accurately reflect the traditions they come from. The eighteen chapters in this book range across all of these issues. The contributors (linguistics, historians and anthropologists) bring a wide range of different experiences, both academic and practical, to their contributions. The book promises to be a standard reference work on Indigenous placenames in Australia for many years to come.

So, I have to sue 1,777 police commissioners, directors of public prosecutions, ombudsmen, administrators of Northern Territory governors, governors-general, members of legislative assembly, members of legislative council, members of house of representatives, senators, and senior officers of higher education in Australia. Whilst I am doing this, 250 people apply for restraining orders, and 200 arrests occur. I become friends with the retired Chief Justice of the High Court, Sir Anthony Frank Mason, while he establishes a Hong Kong Final Court of Appeal and becomes a judge for 20 years. I said, "Whilst it is significant the Chief Justice of the High Court has been negligent for 7 years in his written judgements, I think what is more significant is the fact 7 ministers from both the Labour Party and Liberal Party have been significant for 7 years in their administration of violated legislation." I also said that no matter how hard life was, Vanessa Camille Bayliss always protected me, so no matter what I have taken appropriate steps to protect, as that is the right thing to do. Sir Anthony Frank Mason says, "I appreciate you protecting me." I get the Pope's apology to China and the Pope's apology to Oceania and establish the Australian Capital Territory Supreme Court of Appeal 2001 and make a United Nations case.
