Book The Poet s Freedom

Download or read book The Poet s Freedom written by Susan Stewart and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2011-10-11 with total page 322 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Why do we need new art? How free is the artist in making? And why is the artist, and particularly the poet, a figure of freedom in Western culture? The MacArthur Award–winning poet and critic Susan Stewart ponders these questions in The Poet’s Freedom. Through a series of evocative essays, she not only argues that freedom is necessary to making and is itself something made, but also shows how artists give rules to their practices and model a self-determination that might serve in other spheres of work. Stewart traces the ideas of freedom and making through insightful readings of an array of Western philosophers and poets—Plato, Homer, Marx, Heidegger, Arendt, Dante, and Coleridge are among her key sources. She begins by considering the theme of making in the Hebrew Scriptures, examining their accountof a god who creates the world and leaves humans free to rearrange and reform the materials of nature. She goes on to follow the force of moods, sounds, rhythms, images, metrical rules, rhetorical traditions, the traps of the passions, and the nature of language in the cycle of making and remaking. Throughout the book she weaves the insight that the freedom to reverse any act of artistic making is as essential as the freedom to create. A book about the pleasures of making and thinking as means of life, The Poet’s Freedom explores and celebrates the freedom of artists who, working under finite conditions, make considered choices and shape surprising consequences. This engaging and beautifully written notebook on making will attract anyone interested in the creation of art and literature.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One of the more exciting prophecies concerning the Messiah is Isaiah 9:6, and it is very full and very pregnant in its meaning. Here we read the well-known nativity verse concerning the advent of the Messiah as a child born, (his blessed incarnation), and then the varied designations given to that child in his titles. "For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given: and the government shall be upon his shoulder: and his name shall be called Wonderful, Counsellor, The Mighty God, The everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace." There are seven designations in this verse, (including being, 1) born a child and 2) being a son), all of which could be turned in books themselves (and have been). To choose one title to speak on is very difficult. Jeremiah Burroughs, in this work, has chosen the term, "wonderful," the third in the list, to consider. This work by Burroughs will help the Christian discern some of the sparks of Christ's wonder in his various offices and works. Jesus is truly wonderful. From Isaiah 9:6 he will cover that Christ is the great wonder of the world. That Christ is wonderful in his offices of Prophet, Priest and King. That Christ is wonderful in his miracles. That Christ is wonderful in his death, resurrection, ascension and present intercession. That Christ is wonderful in the glory of the Father (in two parts) and then concludes with an application. This work is a great encouragement to have our eyes set on the wonders of Christ, and to contemplate daily the person and work of Christ, as God has given us his word to discern him and see him as wonderful.

Book A Printing History of Everyman s Library 1906 1982

Download or read book A Printing History of Everyman s Library 1906 1982 written by Terry Seymour and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2011 with total page 323 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The total number of Everyman's Library volumes that still survive somewhere in the world exceeds 70 million. Since the inception of the Library in 1906, nearly 1200 unique volumes have been published, constantly placing the world's greatest books before a large public. A few of these titles proved unpopular and were never reprinted. But most were reprinted dozens of times, packaged in numerous ways, and benefited from updated editorial work and book design over the last century. Terry Seymour has studied and researched every aspect of this great mass of books. He now captures and distills this knowledge in A Printing History of Everyman's Library 1906-1982. A critical feature, of course, is to update the various collecting factoids that have emerged since 2005 when his Guide to Collecting Everyman's Library was published. The meat of the new book, however, is the Bibliographical Entries section. Each volume that has ever been printed receives its own entry, detailing every printing, each dust jacket variation, any new introductions, updated scarcity numbers, and all relevant notes. Typically an entry contains at least six lines of information, but often much more. In essence, each entry is a story written exclusively about each volume. Armed with this resource, collectors and booksellers can know reliably everything about the Everyman's Library volume that sits on their shelf or is ready to be purchased or sold. They will see how a book fits into the total printing history of that title, and be able to describe and value the book with precision. To further enhance the value of this book, color images illustrate all of the key collecting points. An extensive index of editors, translators and artists is now included. Not just a solo effort, the Printing History has been vetted by other expert collectors, ensuring greater accuracy and comprehensiveness.

  • Author : W. Gary Smith
  • Publisher : Timber Press
  • Release : 2010-09-14
  • ISBN : 0881929735
  • Pages : 301 pages

Download or read book From Art to Landscape written by W. Gary Smith and published by Timber Press. This book was released on 2010-09-14 with total page 301 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Garden designers face some daunting questions: How do I begin the creative process? Where can I find design inspiration? How will I know if my design is successful? If you approach these questions like an artist, with an artist’s tools and ways of looking at the world, you will be able to design gardens that combine the unique character of a place with your innermost creative spirit. You’ll make inspiring gardens that have real meaning, for yourself as well as others. In this luminous volume, landscape architect and artist W. Gary Smith explores the various means that artists use—including drawing, painting, sculpture, meditation, poetry, and dance—to create personal connections with the landscape that enrich and inform garden design. Part 1 focuses on simple techniques that anyone can use to nurture creativity, unleash the imagination, and get ideas down on paper. Part 2 shows how these techniques have shaped actual design projects—with spectacular results. Throughout, the author’s friendly and encouraging voice removes the shroud of mystery surrounding the creative process and shows how even the least artistically inclined can tap into inner resources they never knew they had. Smith’s own exuberant sketches and bold paintings illuminate the path from art to landscape. Infectiously engaging and unfailingly inspiring, this eye-opening book deserves to be read and reread by anyone who aspires to master the rich and demanding art of garden design.
