Book A Different Kind of Black and White

Download or read book A Different Kind of Black and White written by Prue Bramwell-Davis and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2016-03-08 with total page 358 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Why should we continue to draw by hand when computers and photography can do it for us? Freehand drawing is currently enjoying a widespread renaissance. In this path-breaking study, the act of drawing is explored as a way to foster epistemic development and wise thinking skills. Drawing exposes the connecting processes of perception, by which we make sense of the world, creating and using systems of classification which ultimately create boundaries. By exploring the relationships between metaphor, the mental activity fundamental to language, and the coordination of hand and eye essential for drawing, such categories can be dissolved through the development of visual intelligence. This book discusses approaches to epistemic development in relation to experiential learning, citing students’ descriptions of their encounters with ways of knowing based on value judgments rather than the perceived safety of facts. Chapters on prehistoric cave art and early medieval practices of the art of memory provide further insights into what it means to draw, and what a drawing is. A chapter on the history of engineering education discusses the narrowing effects of abstract and theoretical approaches to knowledge at the expense of practical skill and experience. The study was developed in the setting of a postgraduate industrial design course for engineers at the Royal College of Art, London, but its concerns and recommendations, including a wealth of teaching ideas, apply wherever professional practitioners have to make judgments involving conflicting ideas. Its insights hint at a deeper role for the university, taking postgraduates beyond the narrow instrumentalist training agendas favoured by current government policies, to a larger vision of the meaning of professional development.

Book Psychology in Black and White

Download or read book Psychology in Black and White written by Sergio Salvatore and published by IAP. This book was released on 2015-10-01 with total page 367 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is long awaited within the contemporarily creative field of cultural psychologies. It is a theoretical synthesis that is at the level of innovations that Sigmund Freud, James Mark Baldwin, William Stern, Kurt Lewin, Jean Piaget, Lev Vygotsky and Jan Smedslund have brought into psychology over the past century. Here we can observe a creative solution to integrating cultural psychology with the rich traditions of psychodynamic perspectives, without repeating the conceptual impasses in which many psychoanalytic perspectives have become caught.

Download or read book Black on White written by David R. Roediger and published by Schocken. This book was released on 2010-03-31 with total page 367 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this thought-provoking volume, David R. Roediger has brought together some of the most important black writers throughout history to explore the question: What does it really mean to be white in America? From folktales and slave narratives to contemporary essays, poetry, and fiction, black writers have long been among America's keenest students of white consciousness and white behavior, but until now much of this writing has been ignored. Black on White reverses this trend by presenting the work of more than fifty major figures, including James Baldwin, Derrick Bell, Ralph Ellison, W.E.B. Du Bois, bell hooks, Toni Morrison, and Alice Walker to take a closer look at the many meanings of whiteness in our society. Rich in irony, artistry, passion, and common sense, these reflections on what Langston Hughes called "the ways of white folks" illustrate how whiteness as a racial identity derives its meaning not as a biological category but as a social construct designed to uphold racial inequality. Powerful and compelling, Black on White provides a much-needed perspective that is sure to have a major impact on the study of race and race relations in America.

Download or read book Black White written by Erol Rashit and published by Erol Rashit. This book was released on 2012-02-07 with total page 225 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Confronting racism, transcending duality: Black & White is a metaphysical Western, set in modern times and incorporating more than a touch of the East. A young white man, Igor, adopts as his mother a middle‑aged black woman, Sylvia, after meeting her in a café, each having come from the nearby cemetery. The deeper he delves into the death of Sylvia’s son, the more embroiled Igor becomes in the activities of Los Angeles criminals, and the more he becomes the focus of a police investigation himself. If this were an old Western movie, the heroes and villains might almost be wearing white and black hats respectively. Then again, the hats could be misleading: Igor’s appetite for polyamorous relationships is not exactly respectable; nor is his willingness to match the brutality of those he seeks to outwit as he immerses himself within a tangled web of deception and violence. ‘He who sees inaction in action, and action in inaction, he is wise among men.’ —Bhagavad Gita IV, 18

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: White field, black seeds—who can sow? Although the riddle from which this these words are taken comes from oral tradition, it refers to the ability to write, a skill which in most Nordic countries was not regarded as necessary for everyone. And yet a significant number of ordinary people with no access to formal schooling took up the pen and produced a variety of highly interesting texts: diaries, letters, memoirs, collections of folklore and handwritten newspapers. This collection presents the work of primarily Nordic scholars from fields such as linguistics, history, literature and folklore studies who share an interest in the production, dissemination and reception of written texts by non-privileged people during the long nineteenth century.
