Book excerpt: Esta historia critica de la antropología española del siglo XIX se inspira en la perspectiva del "materialismo filosófico" de Gustavo bueno, aplicada (gnoseologicamente) a la antropología. Se efectúa una revisión critica de la historiografía acerca del tema, poniendo de relieve sus insuficiencias, atribuidas a la escasa profundización en los problemas conceptuales que atañen al objeto de la misma. Presentados los marcos generales de interpretación, que median en dichos problemas conceptuales, el trabajo responde la antropología española del XIX mostrando los conflictos y coincidencias entre las diversas categorías antropológicas (biológica, medica, social-cultural) que componen el argumento del desarrollo de un termino gnoseologicamente impreciso (el de "antropología"), pero cuya evolución obedece a ciertas pautas: la "línea principal" -para el periodo considerado-, constituida por la antropología biológica, mantiene una dialéctica con la perspectiva antropológica medica, al tiempo que sus pretensiones "naturalistas" iniciales entran en concurrencia con aspectos social-culturales que se le sobreañaden. Son examinados asimismo otros usos del termino "antropología", y señaladamente los filosóficos ("antropología" escolástica como psicología racional, o "antropología" krausista como derivación de cierto tipo de filosofía idealista). El trabajo se presenta así como una historia de la antropología que, en su ejercicio, constituye una "critica de la antropología", y especialmente de sus pretensiones como "ciencia general del hombre".
