Book excerpt: The text presented here, Francesco Bocchi's Le Bellezze della citta di Fiorenza (The Beauties of the City of Florence), originally published in 1591, is one of the most remarkable of Renaissance writings on art and thus an especially valuable document of the culture within which and for which Renaissance art was made. It is not exactly the first guidebook, nor is it entirely an art guidebook in the modern sense of the word, but it marks an important step in the history of guidebook literature, perhaps the definitive step in the formation of the modern genre. It seeks to direct people's attention to outstanding objects, but also to offer instruction in how to look, what to think, and what to say. Scholars find it useful for purely archaeological reasons, as a record of numerous minor works of art and their locations, for instance, but its deepest source of interest is the lively discursive engagement with art to which it attests, and the passionate and eloquent way in which it makes the case that such engagement is a matter of the greatest urgency and importance. For this reason, the book has much to offer the non-specialist - anyone who visits Florence and gives any thought at all to what it means to look at art - and the desire to reach this kind of reader has been the real motivation behind the preparation of this translation. Enough of the city remains as Bocchi saw it to permit the book still to be used as a guide, held in the hand as one walks from place to place and read before the objects described. The notes and illustrations provided here are designed to facilitate that process. What Bocchi emphasises and what he ignores will sometimes surprise the modern reader, and what he says about individual works may occasionally prompt bewilderment or disagreement. His values and habits of thought are close enough to ours to seem familiar yet are not exactly our own; his way of looking, of thinking, and of speaking are foreign enough to remind us of the distance that separates us from the Renaissance, of the singularity of historical moments and individual points of view. In reading Bocchi, one begins to understand something of how his contemporaries thought about what they saw; one learns to see the works differently and, as a result, to develop a sharper sense of the presuppositions we bring to our encounters with art, to see our own way of looking and thinking more objectively. This translation is thus an invitation to enter into a dialogue with history; its deeper purpose is to stimulate modern visitors to Florence to objectify their own processes of looking, thinking, and speaking, and in so doing to develop a new degree of self-consciousness, a new, historical perspective on themselves. Thomas Frangenberg's main research interests concern European Art and Architecture (1500-1770), Italian Art Theory 1400-1800, the history of linear perspective and its relation to the theory of optics. He teaches at the University of Leicester. Robert Williams is a specialist in Italian sixteenth-century aesthetic theory. He is Professor of History of Art and Architecture at the University of California, Santa Barbara.

It tells the true story of Miss Florence Griswold, who is credited with making American art history by establishing the Lyme Art Colony, the epicenter of U.S. Impressionism, which still exists today nearly 100 years later. Florence called herself, "The Keeper of the Artists" and through the late 1800's and early 1900's played hostess to some of the most famous artists in American history. It was artist Henry Ward Ranger who initially established Griswold House as a Barbizon art-colony but then years later with the arrival of Childe Hassam it was transformed into one of the largest and most famous, American home of Impressionism. The artists never really minded the run-down appearance of Griswold House. They enjoyed low rent and beautiful scenery, which was what drew them to be together there year after year, encouraging each other and going on to sell more and more paintings valued by city people. Florence Griswold's home and story can be experienced today by visitors to Miss Florence's house. After her death, in 1937 her artist friends founded The Florence Griswold Museum, located in Old Lyme, Connecticut. [www.florencegriswoldmuseum.org] This museum tells the story of Miss Florence's days living amongst her many cats and dogs, two or three, hosting famous artists and even a future president of the United States and his artist wife. Visitors get to see a turn-of-the-century art colony and those famous door and wall-panel paintings, all left as forever gifts to her, the woman The New York Times called, "The Patron Saint of Artists." Miss Florence's reputation as a gracious and generous woman is exemplified in the story of artist Willard Metcalf's offer to gift her, as payment for boarding, a painting of The Griswold House called "May Night." Miss Florence refused because she told him it was his best work ever. As usual, she was right. And yet, Miss Florence continued to struggle financially. That is, until the artists surprised her, paying her overdue bills, and then dramatically renovating her home, giving it, and her, new life.

The interpretation of art must be carefully distinguished from the interpretation or explana tion of painting, sculpture, and so forth, the special forms of' art. The latter would imply much discussion of processes, mediums, materials, and so forth. To some extent these inquiries are inevitable, for it not infrequently happens that the materials or the processes employed in art have much to do with the choice of themes and the manner of their treat ment. This is conspicuously true of the mosaics, where the building of pictures with little cubes of marble or other material Was so unlike painting, making some things so much easier and other things so much harder, that the ideals of art inevitably underwent serious modification in consequence. We Shall not understand the mosaics or get into sympathy with them, unless we see that their disparagement of per sonality and intellectual suggestion and their emphasis upon splendor and interpretive decoration was largely due to the materials of which they were made and the process which the artist was compelled to employ. It is folly to attempt to make a picture with mosaic or a statue with paint. When we see art developing preferences in subject and manner on account of the materials or the processes in use, we can understand that development only by taking account of these processes and materials. So much we shall try to do, and only so much, and this too in an utterly untechnical manner. Into the maze of studio jargon and studio procedure we shall not try to penetrate. Not only is this a process of enormous difficulty for the layman, itkis distinctly prejudicial to his enjoyment of art. The studio bears the same relation to art that the kitchen does to the banquet. The proof of the pudding is in the eating, not in the cooking. It is not through the kitchen that the guests are taken to the feast.
