Upon retiring from the presidency, General Jackson published a farewell address, took up his residence at the Hermitage and died there on June 8, 1845. His wife died on Dec. 22, 1828, after his election to the presidency, but be fore he was inducted into othee. Her death was the greatest blow of his life. To some of his friends who called shortly after her death he said: What are the world and its honors to me since she is taken from me? They sleep side by side, not far from the old dwelling, their remains covered by a massive monument of Tennessee limestone, but his memory will endure for centuries. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Notable Men of Tennessee, Vol. 2: Personal and Genealogical, With Portraits James knox polk, eleventh president of the United States, was born in North Carolina, Nov. 2, 1795, his imme diate ancestors coming from Ireland. After reeeinng a col legiate education, he studied law, and in 1820 was admitted to the bar. His life is part of the history of Tennessee. In 1825 he was elected to the state legislature, at the age of twenty-thre years, and two years later was elected to the lower branch of Congress. While a member of that bodv he served as speaker for four years, resigning his seat in 1839 to accept the Demo cratic nomination for governor. In the campaign of that year he defeated Gov. Newton Cannon, who was a candidate for re election, ehieflv because of his superior ability as a debater, Gov ernor Cannon being no match for Polk as a public speaker. Two Years later he was renominated, but this time he was opposed by james Chamberlain Jones, who was Polk's equal. If not his master, in political debate. The campaign resulted in the election of Jones, who two years later was te-elected, again defeating Mr. Polk. These two campaigns are still referred to as the polk-jones contests. Although the debates were Spir ited, and at times somewhat caustic, they were without any of that bitterness that engefiders lasting enmity. In 1844 Mr. Polk was nominated for president, and was elected by a small majority over Henrv Clav. His cabinet was made up of some of the ablest and best-known men of his party.
