Download or read book Modern Jewish Philosophy and the Politics of Divine Violence written by Daniel H. Weiss and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2023-03-31 with total page 343 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Is commitment to God compatible with modern citizenship? In this book, Daniel H. Weiss provides new readings of four modern Jewish philosophers – Moses Mendelssohn, Hermann Cohen, Franz Rosenzweig, and Walter Benjamin – in light of classical rabbinic accounts of God's sovereignty, divine and human violence, and the embodied human being as the image of God. He demonstrates how classical rabbinic literature is relevant to contemporary political and philosophical debates. Weiss brings to light striking political aspects of the writings of the modern Jewish philosophers, who have often been understood as non-political. In addition, he shows how the four modern thinkers are more radical and more shaped by Jewish tradition than has previously been thought. Taken as a whole, Weiss' book argues for a fundamental rethinking of the relationship between Judaism and politics, the history of Jewish thought, and the ethical and political dynamics of the broader Western philosophical tradition.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume presents a wide-ranging selection of Jewish theological responses to the Holocaust. It will be the most complete anthology of its sort, bringing together for the first time: (1) a large sample of ultra-orthodox writings, translated from the Hebrew and Yiddish; (2) a substantial selection of essays by Israeli authors, also translated from the Hebrew; (3) a broad sampling of works written in English by American and European authors. These diverse selections represent virtually every significant theological position that has been articulated by a Jewish thinker in response to the Holocaust. Included are rarely studied responses that were written while the Holocaust was happening.

Download or read book The Spirit World written by Clarence Larkin and published by . This book was released on 1921 with total page 184 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this day of the revival of "Spiritism," when so many, through the loss of loved ones in the "Great World War," are longing to communicate with the dead, and are resorting to forbidden means to that end; a day in which science is trying to discover whether there is another world than this, and whether men live after death, and if so can they communicate with the living, it seems timely that a book should be written to show what the Holy Scriptures have revealed of the "World of Spirits." The Bible has much to say about the "Spirit World," and if we will carefully search its pages we shall know all there is to be known in this life of the "World to Come." For if men will not listen to Moses and the Prophets, they will not be persuaded though one rose or came back from the dead. Luke 16:31. - Foreword.
