Book excerpt: “A read so riveting, it's not hard to imagine watching it unfold on Sunday nights.” —The Associated Press The inside story of HBO, the start-up company that reinvented television—by two veteran media reporters HBO changed how stories could be told on TV. The Sopranos, Sex and the City, The Wire, Game of Thrones. The network’s meteoric rise heralded the second golden age of television with serialized shows that examined and reflected American anxieties, fears, and secret passions through complicated characters who were flawed and often unlikable. HBO’s own behind-the-scenes story is as complex, compelling, and innovative as the dramas the network created, driven by unorthodox executives who pushed the boundaries of what viewers understood as television at the turn of the century. Originally conceived by a small upstart group of entrepreneurs to bring Hollywood movies into living rooms across America, the scrappy network grew into one of the most influential and respected players in Hollywood. It’s Not TV is the deeply reported, definitive story of one of America’s most daring and popular cultural institutions, laying bare HBO’s growth, dominance, and vulnerability within the capricious media landscape over the past fifty years. Through the visionary executives, showrunners, and producers who shaped HBO, seasoned journalists Gillette and Koblin bring to life a dynamic cast of characters who drove the company’s creative innovation in astonishing ways—outmaneuvering copycat competitors, taming Hollywood studios, transforming 1980s comedians and athletes like Chris Rock and Mike Tyson into superstars, and in the late 1990s and 2000s elevating the commercial-free, serialized drama to a revered art form. But in the midst of all its success, HBO was also defined by misbehaving executives, internal power struggles, and a few crucial miscalculations. As data-driven models like Netflix have taken over streaming, HBO’s artful, instinctual, and humanistic approach to storytelling is in jeopardy. Taking readers into the boardrooms and behind the camera, It’s Not TV tells the surprising, fascinating story of HBO’s ascent, its groundbreaking influence on American business, technology, and popular culture, and its increasingly precarious position in the very market it created.
Download or read book This Is Not a Program written by Tiqqun and published by National Geographic Books. This book was released on 2011-05-06 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An urgent critique of the biopolitical subject and omnipresent Empire. Historical conflict no longer opposes two massive molar heaps, two classes—the exploited and the exploiters, the dominant and dominated, managers and workers—between which, in each individual case, it would be possible to differentiate. The front line no longer cuts through the middle of society; it now runs through each one of us... “—from This Is Not a Program Traditional lines of revolutionary struggle no longer hold. Rather, it is ubiquitous cybernetics, surveillance, and terror that create the illusion of difference within hegemony. Configurations of dissent and the rhetoric of revolution are merely the other face of capital, conforming identities to empty predicates, ensuring that even “thieves,” “saboteurs,” and “terrorists” no longer exceed the totalizing space of Empire. This Is Not a Program offers two texts, both originally published in French by Tiqqun with Introduction to Civil War in 2001. In This Is Not a Program, Tiqqun outlines a new path for resistance and struggle in the age of Empire, one that eschews the worn-out example of France's May '68 in favor of what they consider to be the still fruitful and contemporary insurrectionary movements in Italy of the 1970s. “As a Science of Apparatuses” examines the way Empire has enforced on the subject a veritable metaphysics of isolation and pacification, “apparatuses” that include chairs, desks, computers; surveillance (security guards, cameras); disease (depression); crutch (cell phone, lover, sedative); and authority. Tiqqun's critique of the biopolitical subject and omnipresent Empire is all the more urgent as we become inured to the permanent state of exception that is the War on Terror and to other, no less intimate forms of pacification. But all is not lost. In its unrelenting production of the Same, Empire itself creates the conditions necessary for the insurrection to come.

Book excerpt: This book shows how the insurance industry and the medical industrial complex are the major influences in the health policy of the United States. They, and not the people, are those who determine the policies of the U.S. government. The volume shows how the United States could indeed provide comprehensive and universal health benefits coverage to the majority of the U.S. population at lower costs than the current health care nonsystem.

Download or read book Tax administration advance tax refund program was a major accomplishment but not problem free written by and published by DIANE Publishing. This book was released on 2002 with total page 42 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: IRS and FMS should be commended for the extensive amount of work they accomplished in a short period of time to issue 86 million advance tax refund checks. While there are bound to be implementation issues in any effort of this magnitude, IRS responded to problems quickly so that only a small percentage of advance refund checks were affected. Although taxpayers experienced problems in reaching IRS by telephone, IRS probably did as good as it could considering the increased demand for assistance, the number of staff available, and the fact that the advance tax refund was a one time event that made it unrealistic to hire and train additional staff. Although this report discusses various implementation issues related to the advance tax refund program and the rate reduction credit, we are not recommending any specific corrective actions related to those issues. Because our review focused on the advance tax refund program, we have no basis for knowing whether the identified issues were unique to that program or more widespread and, not knowing that, we have no basis for recommending specific changes to IRS's policies or procedures. The various observations we identified in the prior section of this report should be useful to IRS if faced with similar challenges in the future. However, IRS staff who were involved in planning and implementing the advance tax refund program, including those aspects related to the rate reduction credit, are in an even better position than either us or TIGTA to assess IRS's performance and suggest alternative approaches for handling the challenges involved in such an effort. That kind of in-house assessment, while including the results of work done by us and TIGTA, could delve into details that we did not, such as IRS's testing of programming changes and its decision to not send notices to taxpayers reminding them of the amount of advance tax refund they received.
