Book excerpt: I am a 47-year-old respectable, ordinary woman. I sold my home in Belfast at the height of the housing market boom. After taking advice from someone I thought to be financially astute, I invested most of the proceeds from the sale. This resulted in me being almost broke and homeless to boot. Consequently, I found myself moving into a hostel in Belfast. My story, in journal form, gives an insight into how this affected my life. I fell into depression, was prescribed anti-depressants, drank to excess on an almost daily basis, but eventually, slowly, began the fight to get out. The three months spent inside the hostel are a total revelation; a culture shock to say the least, and I impart a bit of the life within, providing detailed accounts of horrors of which the outside world is unaware. I lived amongst a cross section of Belfast's undesirables, learned how to survive, fought the system, and unexpectedly, made a friend along the way. I confide in only a handful of people and do my damndest to hide it from the rest. I can accept help from no one on the outside, for fear of jeopardising my fight to be re-housed. My story is as accurate an account of life in a hostel as it is possible to be. Nothing is left out. My determination is fierce and I eventually do go home. It all occurred in 2009. Della B. lives in South Belfast, Northern Ireland. She is inspired by ordinary people who achieve extraordinary things. http: //SBPRA.com/DellaB

Download or read book Not Going Home Alone written by James Kirschke and published by Ballantine Books. This book was released on 2008-12-10 with total page 318 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Experience the pain, the pride, and the triumph of the Marine Corps All the members of 1st Lt. James J. Kirschke’s mortar platoon and then rifle platoon knew the stakes: the Marines are America’s military elite, expected to train harder, fight longer, sacrifice more. Kirschke led by example in the hotly contested zone just south of the DMZ and in the dangerous AnHoa region southwest of DaNang. There Kirschke’s units, with resources stretched to the limit, saw combat almost daily in some of the fiercest fighting of 1966. Sustained through the toughest firefights and bloodiest ambushes, the men’s morale proved a testament to Kirschke’s leadership and his dedication to what the U.S. Marines stand for. Those beliefs, and the faith of his men, in turn helped Kirschke through his long recovery after he was wounded by the triple explosion of a box mine rigged to an anti-tank rocket round and a frag grenade. The Marines’ legend and reputation are based on the blood, courage, and discipline of warriors like Jim Kirschke. Sparing no one, he has written a powerful chronicle of the deadly war his Marines fought with valor.

Download or read book Ways of Going Home written by Alejandro Zambra and published by Macmillan + ORM. This book was released on 2013-01-08 with total page 122 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Alejandro Zambra's Ways of Going Home begins with an earthquake, seen through the eyes of an unnamed nine-year-old boy who lives in an undistinguished middleclass housing development in a suburb of Santiago, Chile. When the neighbors camp out overnight, the protagonist gets his first glimpse of Claudia, an older girl who asks him to spy on her uncle Raúl. In the second section, the protagonist is the writer of the story begun in the first section. His father is a man of few words who claims to be apolitical but who quietly sympathized—to what degree, the author isn't sure—with the Pinochet regime. His reflections on the progress of the novel and on his own life—which is strikingly similar to the life of his novel's protagonist—expose the raw suture of fiction and reality. Ways of Going Home switches between author and character, past and present, reflecting with melancholy and rage on the history of a nation and on a generation born too late—the generation which, as the author-narrator puts it, learned to read and write while their parents became accomplices or victims. It is the most personal novel to date from Zambra, the most important Chilean author since Roberto Bolaño.

Download or read book Children Going Home written by Roger Bullock and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2019-01-22 with total page 236 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1998, this Darlington child care study looks at the return experiences of children looked after by local authorities. It shows that although the great majority of children go back to their families and home communities, little is known about the process. How can professionals and carers make the transition as easy as possible? The book takes forward ideas first reported in the Dartmouth publication, going home: The return of children separated from their families and tested in subsequent research. It charts patterns of separation and return, considers the experiences of those involved and highlights factors associated with the likelihood of return and its success. Because the factors described in the earlier research have since been confirmed in a blind prospective study they are among the most robust indicators available.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the novel 'Syd Belton: The Boy Who Would Not Go to Sea' by George Manville Fenn, readers are transported to the 19th-century maritime world through the eyes of the titular character, Syd. The book is written in a straightforward and engaging style, filled with vivid descriptions of life at sea and the challenges faced by young sailors. Fenn skillfully weaves elements of adventure, coming-of-age, and moral dilemmas into the narrative, making it a compelling read for both young adult and adult audiences. The novel also offers valuable insights into the historical context of maritime activities during that time period. George Manville Fenn, a prolific Victorian-era author, drew inspiration from his own experiences as a sailor to write 'Syd Belton.' His firsthand knowledge of maritime life brings an authenticity to the story, allowing readers to immerse themselves in the world he creates. Fenn's detailed character development and thematic exploration demonstrate his skill as a storyteller and his deep understanding of human nature. I highly recommend 'Syd Belton: The Boy Who Would Not Go to Sea' for readers who enjoy historical fiction, adventure novels, and coming-of-age stories. Fenn's masterful storytelling and insightful portrayal of the challenges faced by young sailors make this book a timeless classic worthy of exploration.
