Book Aspiration

    Book Details:
  • Author : Agnes Callard
  • Publisher : Oxford University Press
  • Release : 2018-03-01
  • ISBN : 0190639504
  • Pages : 256 pages

Download or read book Aspiration written by Agnes Callard and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2018-03-01 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Becoming someone is a learning process; and what we learn is the new values around which, if we succeed, our lives will come to turn. Agents transform themselves in the process of, for example, becoming parents, embarking on careers, or acquiring a passion for music or politics. How can such activity be rational, if the reason for engaging in the relevant pursuit is only available to the person one will become? How is it psychologically possible to feel the attraction of a form of concern that is not yet one's own? How can the work done to arrive at the finish line be ascribed to one who doesn't (really) know what one is doing, or why one is doing it? In Aspiration, Agnes Callard asserts that these questions belong to the theory of aspiration. Aspirants are motivated by proleptic reasons, acknowledged defective versions of the reasons they expect to eventually grasp. The psychology of such a transformation is marked by intrinsic conflict between their old point of view on value and the one they are trying to acquire. They cannot adjudicate this conflict by deliberating or choosing or deciding-rather, they resolve it by working to see the world in a new way. This work has a teleological structure: by modeling oneself on the person he or she is trying to be, the aspirant brings that person into being. Because it is open to us to engage in an activity of self-creation, we are responsible for having become the kinds of people we are.

Book The Cost of Not Educating the World s Poor

Download or read book The Cost of Not Educating the World s Poor written by Lynn Ilon and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2015-05-15 with total page 245 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In The Cost of Not Educating the World’s Poor, Lynn Ilon observes from her 30 years of travel and work in some 20 developing countries, how global instability, problems of environmental degradation, spread of global disease, migration and political instability are a cost of viewing the uneducated poor as separated from a networked of fast-growing global knowledge. This book shows how powerful global learning systems are rapidly forming and linking the rich world with the world of the poor and developing nations. Using a narrative voice interleaved with concise introductions to the underlying theories (economics, development, learning, technology and networks) it shows us how changing our ways of thinking can lead to new possibilities. The Cost of Not Educating the World’s Poor is based on an emerging theory of development economics and the author’s own vast experiences and stories. It also discusses, among other issues: International development and how it has evolved toward an emphasis on knowledge How networked human capital creates new potential for poorly resourced countries The formation of a global system of learning networks The digitization of knowledge How nations improve their well-being through knowledge and equity This inter-disciplinary assessment of international learning inequality and the methods to overcome it will appeal to researchers concerned with emerging concepts of global learning networks and their effects on development. It will also be of interest to students and policymakers studying national inequality, economics, and global development.

Book I Mattered a Teacher S Story

Download or read book I Mattered a Teacher S Story written by Dr. Frankie J. Monroe-Moore and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2012-02-21 with total page 485 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In The New Meaning of Educational Change Fullen wrote, Low morale, depressed, feeling unfairly blamed for the ills of society? You must be a teacher. This quote spoke volumes to me as I watched politicians jockeying for position by spewing their recycled political rhetoric, and then launch an all out attack against public school teachers. In years past these attacks had been levied against those receiving social security, Medicare and Medicaid which mainly affected the poor, disabled and elderly. Dont get me wrong these issues are still on the table, but I guess politicians felt they had beaten them with a dead horse and needed another soft target to spark the publics interest so public school teachers was it. They struck with a vengeance firing public school teachers by the thousands throughout the country. In an attempt to reduce the collective bargaining power of teacher unions, such as American Federation of Teacher (AFT) in Texas they claimed the only way they knew to help balance the state and district school budget shortfalls was to rescind some of the benefits they had agreed too. It hurts when the profession Ive dedicated over half of my adult life (25 yrs.) to; is under attack by politicians and others that have no true concept of whats involved in being a public school teacher. We have absolutely nothing to do with the decision making process. First were told to do one thing and then were told to do something entirely different. Its almost schizophrenic. To all of my colleagues that remain on the frontlines of public education and those that are planning to take up the banner This books for you. You might not have control over the decisions being made outside your classroom, but you can control those things going on inside. I provide ways to control student behavior by the design of your classroom to the use of a simple yellow tablet.
