Some were members of my staff here in Namibia while I was Director of Fisheries and later Executive Director (Permanent Secretary) of the MFMR. There are no other scientists cum authors better equipped for the task of offering a high quality overview covering the freshwater fishes of Namibia and related issues linked to this subject. This book is a groundbreaking, first of its kind for Namibia, a scientifically orientated record of the topic of freshwater fish in our country. However, at the same time, it has been written in such a way that it also offers a leisurely journey for the layman wishing to increase general knowledge about Namibia's freshwater fishes. Book Historical Dictionary of Namibia

Download or read book Historical Dictionary of Namibia written by Victor L. Tonchi and published by Scarecrow Press. This book was released on 2012-08-31 with total page 587 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On March 21, 1990, Sam Nujoma was sworn in as the first president of independent Namibia. This ceremony marked the end of a struggle that lasted more than two decades and a period of colonialism that lasted more than a century. Finally, after decades long wars over grazing in the 19th century, genocidal colonial suppression by Germany at the beginning of the 20th century, repressive apartheid racialism throughout the 20th century, and a prolonged armed liberation struggle, Namibians had the chance to choose their own leaders, develop a democratic political process in a free society, and to bring economic development and greater equity to their country. The Historical Dictionary of Namibia covers the history of Namibia through a chronology, an introductory essay, appendixes, and an extensive bibliography. The dictionary section has several hundred cross-referenced entries on important personalities, politics, economy, foreign relations, religion, and culture. This book is an excellent access point for students, researchers, and anyone wanting to know more about Namibia.

Book Kalahari Cheetahs

    Book Details:
  • Author : Gus Mills
  • Publisher : Oxford University Press
  • Release : 2017-07-05
  • ISBN : 0191020117
  • Pages : 288 pages

Download or read book Kalahari Cheetahs written by Gus Mills and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2017-07-05 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The cheetah, the fastest terrestrial animal, has widespread appeal amongst wildlife biologists and enthusiasts alike. However, like all all large carnivores, it is increasingly threatened by habitat loss and its status is now classified as 'Vulnerable' by the IUCN. This is the first comprehensive study of cheetah biology in an arid environment, a major component of its current distribution range. The book brings together results from an intensive six year study of the cheetah by the authors in the Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park in South Africa and Botswana. It documents a wealth of detailed and direct observations of cheetah population biology and behavioural ecology, adopting an evolutionary approach and providing a conceptual framework for future research and applied management in the context of global environmental change. Kalahari Cheetahs covers topics such as optimal foraging theory, hunting strategies and predator prey relations, mating systems and reproductive strategies and success, inter-specific competition, demography, social organisation, and population limitation. Comparisons with previous cheetah studies reveal the variability of ecological determinants on behaviour, and the behavioural flexibility and ability of these carnivores to adapt to different environments. This advanced textbook is suitable for graduate level students as well as professional researchers in felid behavioural ecology and conservation biology. It will also be of relevance and use to conservationists, wildlife managers, and African wildlife enthusiasts.

Book Been There Done That

  • Author : David Bristow
  • Publisher : Penguin Random House South Africa
  • Release : 2013-02-20
  • ISBN : 1920545735
  • Pages : 953 pages

Download or read book Been There Done That written by David Bristow and published by Penguin Random House South Africa. This book was released on 2013-02-20 with total page 953 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: At the age of 14, author David Bristow stuck a large touring map of South Africa on his bedroom wall, determined to mark off every road one day. It was the start of a life-long love affair with the land – indeed, in 40 years of dedicated travelling David has pretty much ‘been there, done that’, visiting almost all of South Africa’s game parks, nature reserves, mountain ranges, beaches, towns and dorps, as well as hiking and biking countless trails. This book is the accumulated knowledge of all that exploration: the very best (and sometimes the worst) of everything this country has to offer: wildlife, history, geography, art and culture, things to do, places to stay and routes and trails to be discovered by car, bike and on foot ... Anyone who’s ticked off more than a tenth of the entries in this book is, according to the author, qualified to wear the T-shirt. David Bristow began his writing career as a news journalist before reading for a Master’s Degree in Environmental Sciences. Although he claims to prefer riding his mountain bike, surfing and playing with his children to working, he has written around a dozen books for Random House Struik alone and spent 13 years as the editor of Getaway travel magazine.
