Book Pope John XXIII

Download or read book Pope John XXIII written by Christian Feldmann and published by The Crossroad Publishing Co.. This book was released on 2000 with total page 204 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Angelo Roncalli was pope for only five years, yet he won the hearts and minds of people the world over, including many non-Catholics with his warm style and commitment to bring the Catholic Church in line with the modern world. "We are not on the earth to guard a museum," he had once said about the Church, "but to tend a blooming garden full of life." Pope John XXIII is the story of a real Christian who became pope. Roncalli introduced himself to the crowds in St. Peter's Square on October 28, 1958 with the words "I am called John." Already seventy-seven years old, this son of peasants was expected to stage a merely transitional papacy. Surprising many, he became the pope of transition by convening the Second Vatican Council in October of 1962. The Council lasted for five years and saw his death, but it opened wide the doors of the Church, doing away with much of the old pomp and practice, and leading it into the twenty-first century.

Book excerpt: People of God is a brand new series of inspiring biographies for the general reader. Each volume offers a compelling and honest narrative of the life of an important twentieth or twenty-first century Catholic. Some living and some now deceased, each of these women and men have known challenges and weaknesses familiar to most of us, but responded to them in ways that call us to our own forms of heroism. Each offers a credible and concrete witness of faith, hope, and love to people of our own day. The canonization of Pope John XXIII and the fiftieth anniversary of Vatican II call for a fresh look at this remarkable man. Now highly regarded Vatican II historian Massimo Faggioli offers a rich and insightful portrait. His sources include the complete edition of the private diaries of the future John XXIII, published recently in ten volumes, much of which is unavailable in English. Faggioli’s use of this treasure of personal notes of the future pope means this biography offers a more complete and nuanced understanding of Angelo Roncalli than is available anywhere else in English at this time. The result is both unforgettable and inspiring.

Book Formation of Catholic Priests as Artisanal and not Policing

Download or read book Formation of Catholic Priests as Artisanal and not Policing written by Tarcisius Mukuka and published by GRIN Verlag. This book was released on 2020-12-14 with total page 36 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Academic Paper from the year 2020 in the subject Theology - Practical Theology, grade: 1.0, Kwame Nkrumah University, language: English, abstract: This article is about formation as an art and not a science. It is about accompaniment and discernment towards evangelical empowerment driven by the Nazareth Manifesto by mature mentors who are human-spiritual whisperers of their charges. I was beginning to get paranoid at the number of times the word “rotten” or “broken” pops into my head in reference to the priestly formation system until my friend Elizabeth Mphande told me in an email, “It’s really sad and pathetic. It’s like the whole system is rotten and some guys are just out there to do a job to get easy money from parishioners. Taking its point of departure from Pope Francis’ concern about initial formation for the priesthood, I suggest that in the light of the Ratio Fundamentalis, formation must operate on the principle of “small is beautiful” by avoiding mass manufacture of priests. The focus of such formation needs to be accompaniment and discernment. Failure to do this, we risk in the words of Pope Francis, churning out little monsters in circumstances that are akin to policing rather transformative formation. Pope Francis never defined what he meant by “little monsters” but I opine that it has to do with the style of leadership. Little or big monsters would be the equivalent of an ecclesiastical Donald Trump. These monsters eventually grow into big monsters as bishops, archbishops and cardinals with a heart of stone instead of a heart of flesh whose default exercise of authority is hard power rather than soft power. As the Pope says, formation and we might add episcopal oversight “is a work of art, not policing” [è un’opera artigianale, non poliziesca].

Book excerpt: “John XXIII was, in the best possible sense, a revolutionary—a Pope of modernization who kept in continuity with the church’s past, yet made even the most enlightened of his 20th century predecessors seem like voices of another age.” —Time magazine “The story of Good Pope John is always worth telling….Greg Tobin tells it very well. As we wait for better days, this story will help to keep hope alive.” —Thomas Groome, Professor of Theology and Religious Education at Boston College, author of Will There Be Faith Published in the 50th anniversary year of the historic Vatican Council II, The Good Pope by Greg Tobin is the first major biography of Pope John XXIII, a universally beloved religious leader who ushered in an era of hope and openness in the Catholic Church—and whose reforms, had they been accepted, would have enabled the church to avoid many of the major crises it faces today. Available prior to John XXIII’s likely canonization, Tobin’s The Good Pope is timely and important, offering a fascinating look at the legacy of Vatican Council II, an insightful investigation into the history of the Catholic Church, and a celebration of one of its true heroes.

Book Praying With Pope John Xxiii

Download or read book Praying With Pope John Xxiii written by Bill Huebsch and published by . This book was released on 1999-05-30 with total page 120 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Angelo Roncalli, the man who became Pope John XXIII and who convened the Second Vatican Council, is a rich and fullhearted spiritual companion. Blessed Pope John challenges us to trust humanity, even when the times don't seem to deserve our trust; he models a love of history from which we may learn about life; he teaches us to keep our wit, even when we are confronted by detractors; and he reminds us that if the Lord has given us so many gifts, then there must be a divine plan for their use. Perhaps most important, he has given us a clear and unmistakable vision of the gospel and its power to renew the face of the earth.
