Book Teaching Australian Literature

Download or read book Teaching Australian Literature written by Brenton Doecke and published by Wakefield Press. This book was released on 2011 with total page 402 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Summary: What role should Australian literature play in the school curriculum? What principles should guide our selection of Australian texts? To what extent should concepts of the nation and a national identity frame the study of Australian writing? What do we imagine Australian literature to be? How do English teachers go about engaging their students in reading Australian texts? This volume brings together teachers, teacher educators, creative writers and literary scholars in a joint inquiry that takes a fresh look at what it means to teach Australian literature. The immediate occasion for the publication of these essays is the implementation of The Australian Curriculum: English, which several contributors subject to critical scrutiny. In doing so, they question the way that literature teaching is currently being constructed by standards-based reforms, not only in Australia but elsewhere.

Book Cultural Encounters in Translated Children s Literature

Download or read book Cultural Encounters in Translated Children s Literature written by Helen Frank and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-04-08 with total page 340 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Cultural Encounters in Translated Children's Literature offers a detailed and innovative model of analysis for examining the complexities of translating children's literature and sheds light on the interpretive choices at work in moving texts from one culture to another. The core of the study addresses the issue of how images of a nation, locale or country are constructed in translated children's literature, with the translation of Australian children's fiction into French serving as a case study. Issues examined include the selection of books for translation, the relationship between children's books and the national and international publishing industry, the packaging of translations and the importance of titles, blurbs and covers, the linguistic and stylistic features specific to translating for children, intertextual references, the function of the translation in the target culture, didactic and pedagogical aims, euphemistic language and explicitation, and literariness in translated texts. The findings of the case study suggest that the most common constructs of Australia in French translations reveal a preponderance of traditional Eurocentric signifiers that identify Australia with the outback, the antipodes, the exotic, the wild, the unknown, the void, the end of the world, the young and innocent nation, and the Far West. Contemporary signifiers that construct Australia as urban, multicultural, Aboriginal, worldly and inharmonious are seriously under-represented. The study also shows that French translations are conventional, conservative and didactic, showing preference for an exotic rather than local specificity, with systematic manipulation of Australian referents betraying a perception of Australia as antipodean rural exoticism. The significance of the study lies in underscoring the manner in which a given culture is constructed in another cultural milieu, especially through translated children's literature.

Book Bush City Cyberspace

    Book Details:
  • Author : John Foster
  • Publisher : Elsevier
  • Release : 2005-06-01

  • Pages : 202 pages

Download or read book Bush City Cyberspace written by John Foster and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2005-06-01 with total page 202 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Aimed at academic, professional and general readers, Bush, city, cyberspace provides a snapshot of the state of Australian children's and adolescent literature in the early twenty-first century, and an insight into its history. In doing so, it promotes a sense of where Australian literature for young people may be going and captures a literary and critical mood with which readers in Australia and beyond will identify. The title of the work is intended to capture the fact that the field has changed dramatically in the century and a half that 'Australian children's literature' has existed, from the bush myths and heroism that inform the past and the present, through the recognition that the vast majority of authors and readers live in cities, to the third wave of 'cyberliterature' that incorporates multimedia, hypertext, weblinks and e-books - none of which lessens the enduring enthusiasm of practitioners and readers for books.Bush, city, cyberspace is not meant to be an encyclopedic volume. Rather, well-known, recent and/or award-winning works have been emphasised, with the addition of others where these help to illuminate particular points. The book is similar in coverage and approach to Australian Children's Literature: An Exploration of Genre and Theme, written by the same three authors and published by the Centre for Information Studies in 1995. In the intervening period, much has changed in the field, notable examples including the blurring of the dividing line between 'quality' and 'popular' literature; the blending of genres; the rise of a truly indigenous literature; the demise, to a significant extent, of 'Outbackery' in fiction; the acceptance of multiculturalism as the norm; and the advent of the literature of cyberspace, with new methods, and the sheer speed, of communication between writer and reader. All these trends, and others, are reflected in this work.

Book excerpt: Never See a Need is an account of the lives and works of the Sisters of St Joseph of the Sacred Heart in South Australia from the time of their foundation in 1866 until Mary MacKillop's canonisation in 2010. Much happened during those 144 years. There were dark times and bright times, times of growth and expansion interspersed with times of decline, times of stability and times of change, and through it all, the members of the Congregation never forgot their call to do what they could to remedy the evils and ills of their society. They were educators, but they also looked out for the welfare of the poor and disadvantaged in different ways as they moved across the landscape to wherever they were needed, always a "people on the move" but always stable in their devotion to their ministry.

Book A True Story How I Survived My Life with a Psychopath

Download or read book A True Story How I Survived My Life with a Psychopath written by Jacquelyn White and published by First Edition Design Pub.. This book was released on 2014-09-11 with total page 207 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is an Autobiography written by an average person, living an extraordinary life. Jacquelyn tells this story in a very unique and compelling style of writing which leaves the reader unable to put the book down as they wonder, "Then what happens?" It is an amazing tale of survival as Jacquelyn moves heaven and earth in an unbelievable battle for her freedom. To actually become, "free" she almost loses her life and must sacrifice all she has. This is a story of a mother's unconditional love for her children. The children she is willing to die to protect, as she overcomes the chains that bind her. It is a tale of hope and leaves the reader with a deep appreciation for their own journey and a new found inspiration for living. The story is made all the more powerful by the legal evidence she has provided in the book to support her claims. This evidence has been fully admitted to in court and is now a matter of public record. The recorded evidence is chilling as it gives a rare insight into the mind of a monster, as it is written in his very own hand writing on his business letter head. Jacquelyn also offers a detailed insight into the systems that she and many others have had to navigate through. This book may help to change some of the laws surrounding these issues. Powerfully moving, deeply engaging and written with raw honesty, this book is well worth the read. This book will be marketed to the millions of people screaming for change, awareness and insight to bring safety and justice to our world.
