Book Norwich s Military Legacy

Download or read book Norwich s Military Legacy written by Michael Chandler and published by Pen and Sword. This book was released on 2017-09-30 with total page 183 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Originally a town that was built of wood by the Anglo-Saxons, it was later burned down and then rebuilt as Englands second city, after London, by William the Conqueror. Riots between the church and the citizens saw Norwich at war with the Pope in 1272 when a gate was constructed as a penance. The Norfolk Regiment has seen its men in combat from the Napoleonic Wars, the Crimean War, the Boer War and both World Wars. The more recent conflicts in the Falklands, Iraq and Afghanistan have also witnessed the bravery of the Norfolks. A comprehensive list of military personnel who gave their lives is examined, including Norwich-born Second Lieutenant Wilfred Edwards VC, as well as an account of 9694 Private John Henry Abigail of the Norfolk Regiment who, on 12 September 1917, aged 21, was executed for being AWOL. It would not be until November 2006 that Private Abigail was pardoned by the British government.

Book excerpt: Norwich University, the nationOCOs oldest private military college, graduated hundreds of officers into the Federal armies who participated in the long and bloody war to crush the Southern Rebellion of 1861-1865. Robert PoirierOCOs By the Blood of Our Alumni: Norwich University Citizen Soldiers in the Army of the Potomac is their story. It is difficult to overstate the schoolOCOs influence on the war in the Eastern Theater. Norwich alumni were scattered throughout the armyOCOs hierarchy. In the Army of the Potomac alone, 1 graduate led a corps, 7 led divisions, 21 commanded brigades, and 38 stood at the heads of regiments. Scores more served in staff positions or in the ranks. These menOCocitizen-soldiers steeped in our countryOCOs finest traditionsOCowere eyewitnesses to many of the warOCOs watershed events. In addition to training thousands of volunteers in the art of war, these officers played a significant role in turning back General LeeOCOs Army of Northern Virginia at Antietam; defeating Lee at Gettysburg; bleeding his army during the Overland Campaign and in PetersburgOCOs trenches; and finally forcing his surrender at Appomattox. Norwich alumni served proudly in every battle of the Army of the Potomac.Unfortunately, historians have largely overlooked the important role Norwich played in both preparing our nation for conflict and in winning the Civil War. Robert G. Poirier, a retired intelligence officer, Norwich alumnus, and combat veteran, has spent years researching and writing By the Blood of Our Alumni. His book narrates the course of the war in the Eastern Theater by chronicling the experiences of these soldiers. Wherever possible, Poirier allows the veterans to speak for themselves, weaving their recollections and observations into a seamless history that will please everyone from the hardcore academic to the general reader.By the Blood of our Alumni restores this venerable institution to its proper place in American military history."

Book Enduring Controversies in Military History 2 volumes

Download or read book Enduring Controversies in Military History 2 volumes written by Spencer C. Tucker and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2017-09-21 with total page 994 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This provocative examination of major controversies in military history enables readers to learn how scholars approach controversial topics and provides a model for students in the study and discussion of other historical events. Why did Alexander the Great's empire fall apart so soon after his death? How did France win the Hundred Years War despite England winning its major battles? Was slavery the primary cause of the American Civil War? Would it have benefited the Allies militarily to have gone to war against Germany in 1938 rather than in 1939? Should women be allowed to serve in combat positions in the U.S. military? All of these questions and many other historical controversies are addressed in this thought-provoking reference book. By exploring every angle of some of the most contentious debates involving military history, this book builds students' critical thinking skills by supplying a complete background of the controversial topic to provide context, and also by providing multiple perspective essays written by top scholars in the field. The perspective essays present arguments for different positions on the controversy. Readers will consider the cases for and against whether Hannibal should have marched on Rome after his momentous victory at Cannae, whether the United States was justified in using the atomic bomb in Japan, whether Adolf Hitler was primarily responsible for the Holocaust, and whether torturing prisoners during the War on Terror is warranted, among many other historical military debates.

Book excerpt: June 6, 1944: Nineteen boys from Bedford, Virginia -- population just 3,000 in 1944 -- died in the first bloody minutes of D-Day. They were part of Company A of the 116th Regiment of the 29th Division, and the first wave of American soldiers to hit the beaches in Normandy. Later in the campaign, three more boys from this small Virginia town died of gunshot wounds. Twenty-two sons of Bedford lost--it is a story one cannot easily forget and one that the families of Bedford will never forget. The Bedford Boys is the true and intimate story of these men and the friends and families they left behind. Based on extensive interviews with survivors and relatives, as well as diaries and letters, Kershaw's book focuses on several remarkable individuals and families to tell one of the most poignant stories of World War II--the story of one small American town that went to war and died on Omaha Beach.

With the perception and reflection of a man on the cusp of retirement from a career teaching high school kids, Marty McClure recalls the relentless intensity of prolonged combat as a teenaged Marine machine gunner facing booby traps and battles in a war with few boundaries. Family and friends know Marty as a kind, peaceful man. They aren‘t aware that when he was young, he plumbed the depths of terror, hatred, and despair with no assurance he‘d ever surface again. Now he needs to reveal what happened in Vietnam and how, with the help of Patti, his wife, Corrie Corrigan, a disabled vet, and Doc Matheson, a corpsman turned trauma surgeon, he works to become a good husband, father, and teacher while he fights to bury the war. Only if he accepts help from his wife and his friends will he find real peace.

Book excerpt: Product Description: Digesting History: The U.S. Naval War College, the Lessons of World War II, and Future Naval Warfare, 1945–1947, by Professor Hal M. Friedman, studies the contribution of the Naval War College, especially in the presidency of Admiral Raymond Spruance, to strategic thought during the first critical postwar years—that is, between the end of the war and the formulation of Containment. This transition period is especially valuable as a window through which to explore institutions such as the College in transition from a hot war to a cold one. While seminal studies exist of the College’s work in the interwar years, none have been published on this period.
