This book was released on 2015-06-15 with total page 174 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Norwegian Immigrant Contributions to America's Making The plan of raising a monument to Leif Erikson, the first European to plant his feet on American soil, was first suggested by Professor Rasmus B. Anderson of Madison, Wis. In 1873 Professor Anderson suggested to the celebrated Norwegian violinist, Ole Bull, the idea that America's Norse discoverer be honored with a lasting memorial. Ole Bull accepted the suggestion with enthusiasm and the two immediately began preparing plans for its realization. Ole Bull was at this time at the height of his powers and the idol of the American people. A few years later he made his American home at Cambridge, Mass. There the American Leif Erikson Monument Committee was organized. The Committee was a brilliant one and included among its members James Russell Lowell, Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, Oliver Wendell Holmes, Thomas S. Appleton, Professor Eben Norton Horsford, the Governor of Massachusetts, the Mayor of Boston and many other distinguished Americans. Funds were rapidly raised and America's then most famous sculptress, Miss Anne Whitney, was commissioned to produce in bronze a statue of Leif Erikson in heroic size. The result is a great work of art. Miss Whitney seems to have taken the splendid physique and features of Ole Bull for her model, according to Professor Anderson. It represents America's discoverer as he discerns the first faint outlines of land far away on the horizon, and with his right hand he shades his eyes from the rays of the sun. Professor Horsford was the orator at the unveiling ceremonies. A replica of the monument stands in Juneau Park, Milwaukee, Wis., on an eminence overlooking Lake Michigan. Another Leif Erikson monument by the sculptor, Sigvald Asbjørnsen, stands in Humboldt Park, Chicago, raised by a committee of the Norwegian group of that city. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A History of Norwegian Immigration to the United States: From the Earliest Beginning Down to the Year 1848 Four years ago I contributed an article to The Iowa Journal of History and Politics upon The Scandinavian Factor in the American Population, in which I discussed briefly the causes of emigration from the Northern countries. This article forms the basis of chapters VI-VIII of the present volume, much new evidence from later years having, however, been added. In a subsequent issue of the same J our nal I published an article on The Coming of the Norwegians to Iowa, which is embodied in part in chapters III-V of this volume. The remaining thirty-six chapters are new. During the last three summers I have continued my investigation of that part of the subject which deals with the immigration movement. This book represents the results of that investigation down to 1848. For invaluable assistance in the investigation I gratefully acknowledge indebtedness to the numer ous pioneers whom, from time to time, I have inter viewed and who so kindly have given the aid sought. Book The First Chapter of Norwegian Immigration to Its Causes and Results

Download or read book The First Chapter of Norwegian Immigration to Its Causes and Results written by Rasmus Bjorn Anderson and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-07 with total page 614 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The First Chapter of Norwegian Immigration, to Its Causes and Results: With an Introduction on the Services Rendered by the Scandinavians to the World and to America The reader will also find a number of repetitions. The author would have been pleased to eliminate many of these, but as the book is written mainly for plain people it was thought better to repeat some of the things that had already been told than to be continually referring the reader to some other part of the volume. The aim has been to give as full an account as possible of each of the six separate settlements, and as will be seen the same persons sometimes appear among the pioneers of more than one settlement. It seemed better to restate some of the facts in regard to such persons than to refer the reader back to other pages of the book. Doubtless there are many names omitted, that ought to have been mentioned, and some of those introduced may have been given more prominence than they are entitled to; but the reason for this is the author's inability to see with sufficient clearness through the veil of time that covers the first epoch of emigration from Norway. Book OLE Rynning s True Account of America Classic Reprint

Download or read book OLE Rynning s True Account of America Classic Reprint written by Ole Rynning and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-07-18 with total page 116 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Ole Rynning's True Account of America Materials of this kind have a many-sided interest. They contain contemporary descriptions of the various settlements established in the United States by Norwegian immigrants, and thus possess permanent value for the history of the Nor wegian element in America. Not a few of the books deal generally with the United States, presenting accounts Of American institutions and customs as viewed by Norwegians, and thus have a place in that large but relatively little ex ploited literature designated as general American travel and description. One of the most interesting aspects of the books is their influence in Norway. In their original form they played an important part in the dissemination throughout Norway of information about America; they were read by thousands upon thousands of prospective emigrants; and they must be studied by the modern reader who wishes to understand the back grounds Of the vast emigration from Norway in the nineteenth century. N'or must it be forgotten that what was happening in Norway had its counterpart in many other countries of Europe. In other words, these Norwegian books and pam phlets are in many respects typical of the travel accounts, emi grant guides, and similar works that went to almost every part Of Europe, contributing everywhere to the advertising of America among Europeans in the nineteenth century. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Norwegians in New York, 1825-1925 Owing to this backwardness on our part in getting our records in order, the contributions to the community made by the Norwegian ele ment in New York have, to a large extent, been hidden under a bushel. Because of this lack of records, statistics and definite information concern ing our life and activities, we do not, perhaps, show up fully as well as we otherwise might, although we do, of course, in a general way rank high as citizens of this country. Book excerpt: This volume is intended to present the progress of immigration from Norway to this country from the beginning down through what may be termed the first period of settlement. It is possible that I may at some future time return to these studies to trace the further growth of the Scandinavian element and its place and influence in American life. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Chapters on Scandinavian Immigration to Iowa The Norwegians are the pioneers in the emigration move ment from the North in the nineteenth century; the Danes were the last to come in considerable numbers. Statistics, however, show that 189 Danes had emigrated to this coun try before 1830, while there were only 94 from Norway and Sweden.1 The Norwegian foreign born population had in 1850 reached while that from Sweden was 3, 559; and Denmark had furnished a little over eighteen hundred. The Danish immigration was not over a year until 1880 and has never reached The Swedish immi gration receives a new impulse in 1852 and reaches five thousand in 1868; it reached its climax of in 1882. The Norwegian exodus began to assume larger proportions in 1843 and reached five thousand in 1866 (according to our census, but in 1853 according.
