Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Where did the idea for nonpartisan constituency redistributions come from? What were the principal reasons that Canada turned to arm's-length commissions to design its electoral districts? In this volume, John Courtney addresses these questions by examining and assessing the readjustment process in Canada's electoral boundaries. Defining electoral districts as 'representational building blocks, ' Courtney compares federal and provincial electoral readjustments in the last half of the 20th century, showing how parliamentarians and legislators, boundary commissions, courts, and interested members of the general public debated representational principles to define the purposes of electoral redistricting in an increasingly urban, ethnically mixed federal state such as Canada

Book Names and Nunavut

    Book Details:
  • Author : Valerie Alia
  • Publisher : Berghahn Books
  • Release : 2007
  • ISBN : 9781845454135
  • Pages : 196 pages

Download or read book Names and Nunavut written by Valerie Alia and published by Berghahn Books. This book was released on 2007 with total page 196 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "...a thought-provoking book. Alia lays out the intricacies of Inuit naming so clearly, describes the Arctic environment so vividly, and conveys such a rich sense of Inuit values, concerns, and humour that readers are likely to hunger for more information and to pose ethnographic and on mastic questions that press forward the horizons of Inuit ethnography. Names and Nunavut is a welcome addition to Arctic ethnography and should be of interest not only to linguists and anthropologists working in the Arctic but to anyone interested in the relationship between onomasty, personhood, and cosmology and to anyone looking for fresh insights to the micropractices of linguistic and onomastic colonialism." - NAMES A Journal of Onomastics "Embedded within this nuanced and extraordinarily well-researched account of the political onomastics (the politics of naming) involved with Inuit (colonial) history are an abundance of theoretical, ethical and political insights into both the complex nature of the Inuit and their evolving engagement with Qallunaat (non-Inuit, Euro-Canadian), as well as the complex nature of engaging in such research. This publication, refreshing in its focus on extensive local community research, delves into the complicated dynamic between colonial administration and its effects on the culture and identity of the Inuits. - British Journal of Canadian Studies On the surface, naming is simply a way to classify people and their environments. The premise of this study is that it is much more - a form of social control, a political activity, a key to identity maintenance and transformation. Governments legislate and regulate naming; people fight to take, keep, or change their names. A name change can indicate subjugation or liberation, depending on the circumstances. But it always signifies a change in power relations. Since the late 1970s, the author has looked at naming and renaming, cross-culturally and internationally, with particular attention to the effects of colonisation and liberation. The experience of Inuit in Canada is an example of both. Colonisation is only part of the Nunavut experience. Contrary to the dire predictions of cultural genocide theorists, Inuit culture - particularly traditional naming - has remained extremely strong, and is in the midst of a renaissance. Here is a ground-breaking study by the founder of the discipline of political onomastics.

Book The Political Process in Canada

Download or read book The Political Process in Canada written by J.H. Aitchison and published by University of Toronto Press. This book was released on 1963-12-15 with total page 289 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The influence of the late R. MacGregor Dawson on political thought in Canada is still with us and will, indeed, be with us for a long time to come. It is fitting therefore that a book should be conceived in his honour and that this book should reflect the high qualities of analysis and writing that he inspired in his many students. All the contributors to this volume, except Professor Clokie, who is Dawson’s generation, were his students in Saskatchewan or Toronto; all provide articles of interest and importance for a most useful volume on the political process in Canada. There are eleven essays, covering many aspects of Canadian political life. From a historical study of the federal government’s relations with the press, we move to consideration of the early ballot and the “swings” in federal elections. The next four essays are devoted to various topics connected with the general theme of political parties, and the next three to some problems of federation, including an account of the federal government’s administration of the North. Professor Clokie’s contribution, “Political Retrospect,” provides a suitable closing chapter.

Book Pivot or Pirouette

Download or read book Pivot or Pirouette written by Tom Flanagan and published by UBC Press. This book was released on 2022-10-01 with total page 248 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Pivot or Pirouette? covers both the backstory and the aftermath of the strangest election in Canadian history, as told by an insider who was involved in the events before, during, and after the ballots were cast. In the early 1990s, a pan-Canadian coalition of Tory voters had been splintered by constitutional politics. Discontented voters flocked to new regional parties; the Conservatives attempted to turn the tide by choosing the first female prime minister, but their efforts fell flat. In the 1993 election, the party was reduced to two seats, the separatist Bloc Québécois became the official opposition, and the Reform Party swept the West. Although the shocking results seemed pivotal, ultimately the pivot turned into a full pirouette as Canadian politics returned to historical norms: new parties shake up the system but are eventually absorbed into it, bringing innovation but not transformation. You can’t understand modern Canadian politics without understanding the 1993 election.
