The final section, Part Four, covers modern disasters, from 1910-1951. The day-to-day life of a miner was fraught with danger, especially when pits were in private hands. Despite government inspection and regulation accidents occurred and they devastated local families and communities. The tragedies included great acts of bravery by volunteer and official rescue teams and they attracted widespread press and media coverage. The great disasters include Hartley (204 deaths), Wallsend (102 fatalities) and Whitehaven (104). The author has taken great care to chronicle each event and compile lists of the dead, including their dependents. The book should be of great value to anyone interested in coal mining, social and family history.

Book The Miners Years of Struggle

Download or read book The Miners Years of Struggle written by Robert Page Arnot and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2023-07-21 with total page 357 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1953, The Miners: Years of Struggle is the official history of the British miners, which draws on original sources, moving into the stormy period when the economic bargaining of the million colliery employees with the mine owners became the concern of Parliament and people. The great strike of 1921; the stoppages of 1921 and 1926 (the latter opening with the General Strike); and how successive administrations met those crises – these form an historical matrix from which the present public ownership inevitably emerged. The conflict of ideas and personalities is shown as part of the struggles of these stormy times. This book will be of interest to students of history, sociology, economics and political science.

Book Managing Industrial Decline

Download or read book Managing Industrial Decline written by Michael Dintenfass and published by Ohio State University Press. This book was released on 1992 with total page 308 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Managing Industrial Decline examines the dramatic decline of the British coal industry through the lens of comparative business history, challenging the prevailing belief that the industry's decline was due primarily to global economic factors and instead demonstrating that entrepreneurial failings of individual coal firms contributed significantly to the problem. Through a comparative analysis of company histories, Dintenfass shows how the full range of business operations at British coal firms, including labor management policies, technological choices, and marketing practices, affected their performance. The histories of individual firms demonstrate that the managements could improve productivity, increase sale prices, and sustain profitability, even as the coal trade succumbed to cyclical depression and secular decline. According to Dintenfass, comparisons between the individual firms and the regional coal industries to which they belonged show that neighboring firms were slow to introduce the modest innovations that the successful firms pioneered. Since there were few barriers to the implementation of these strategies, it appears that Britain's coal masters miscalculated their costs and benefits, contributing to the problem by failing to adopt inexpensive and accessible second-best solutions to production and commercial problems. Managing Industrial Decline, breaks new ground in the field of business history and restores entrepreneurship to its proper place in the analysis of industrial decline.

Book The Miners in Crisis and War

Download or read book The Miners in Crisis and War written by Robert Page Arnot and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2023-07-28 with total page 437 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1961, The Miners in Crisis and War: A History of Miners’ Federation of Great Britain from 1930 Onwards tells the story of two sharply contrasting periods, of world crisis and of world war. The story begins with the Miners’ Federation fallen upon evil days, diminished in numbers, shorn of its former powers of national wage negotiation, divided in counsel and almost whelmed beneath the seismic waves of world economic crisis. Unemployment prevailed, greater than at any time before. The sudden collapse of the cabinet, the formation of the four-party coalition, and the rout of the Labour Party in 1931 shattered these hopes. The climb from the economic abyss of the early thirties is made against a sombre background of the spread of fascism and the approach of war. Then, during the war, the British coal industry and its workers encounter a series of rapid changes, both for better and for worse. The whole main purpose of their trade unions, to maintain and improve the standard of life, is conditioned by the six-year war to such an extent that all come to be merged in a single national union a few months before victory. Thus, in circumstances utterly unforeseen, the old Miners’ Federation, now once more built up in its numbers and in its powers comes to an end after an existence of fifty-five years. This book will be of interest to students of history, sociology, economics and political science.

Book The Miners of Northumberland and Durham

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Miners of Northumberland and Durham: A History of Their Social and Political Progress This is a wonderful story, revealing the hard and tragic life of the Miner and his family during the early part of the nineteenth century. It is published just at a time when the men who are the connecting link between that day and this are fast passing away, and therefore it comes at an opportune moment when there is a very grave danger of the Northern Miner, expecially the younger generation, forgetting the past history of our industry, and with it our indebtedness to those noble pioneers who so faithfully, and at great personal sacrifice and privation, fought and toiled so that the greater liberty we now enjoy might be won. Download or read book Strikes and Solidarity written by Roy A. Church and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2002-05-09 with total page 340 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this important contribution to the study of industrial relations, Roy Church and Quentin Outram present research into the strike activity of British coalminers from the late nineteenth century to the mid-1960s. The authors consider not only the major national strikes and lock-outs which made the industry a byword for industrial militancy, but also the multitude of small-scale strikes which formed a routine part of British colliery lifes. Strikes and Solidarity, first published in 1998, is multi-disciplinary in approach and views coalfield conflict from the perspectives offered by sociologists, industrial relations specialists, and economists, as well as social and economic historians. Church and Outram have successfully blended quantitative and qualitative investigations to explain the long-standing issues presented by industrial relations in the coalfields.
