Book Electoral Registration in Northern Ireland

Download or read book Electoral Registration in Northern Ireland written by Great Britain. Parliament. House of Commons. Northern Ireland Affairs Committee and published by The Stationery Office. This book was released on 2004 with total page 102 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Committee is happy with the effectiveness of the Electoral Fraud (Northern Ireland) Act 2002 but there are still flaws in the current arrangements. Less than 84 percent of these eligible to vote in Northern Ireland, are currently registered; young people and socially economically depressed groups are especially under-represented. Less than 25 percent of 17 and 18 years olds are registered. Voter's names are no longer placed automatically on next year's register, which is an effective anti-fraud measure, but on the other hand this has highlighted the low level of registration. Fewer of the new Electoral Identity Cards (EIDs) were issued than expected, and, while other forms of photographic ID are acceptable at polling stations, over 3,500 voters were turned away from polling stations at recent elections, because of ID problems. An example of the lack of joined-up thinking was the poor performance of two competing Government telephone help lines during the 2003 canvass period.

Book Review of the Electoral Commission

Download or read book Review of the Electoral Commission written by Committee on Standards in Public Life and published by The Stationery Office. This book was released on 2007-01-18 with total page 116 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the eleventh inquiry by the Committee on Standards in Public Life with this particular report reviewing the work of the Electoral Commission. The Commission itself was established as an independent statutory body on 30 November 2000, with a mandate to review or examine such matters as electoral administration, and the conduct of elections and standards of propriety in financing political parties. All these issues have been of recent public concern, and the Committee believes it is important to ask whether the Commission's current mandate, governance arrangements and accountability framework are appropriate for the purpose required of the Commission. The Committee has set out 41 recommendations, including: that the mandate of the Commission should be amended and refocused so that it has two principal statutory duties: (i) as regulator of political party funding and campaign expenditure in the UK; (ii) and as a regulator of electoral administration in Great Britain; further, that is should decentralize responsibility for monitoring and regulating campaign and constituency expenditure in Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland to regional offices; it should report to Parliament annually on standards of electoral administration; it should have no involvement in electoral boundary matters or have a role in undertaking policy development in relation to electoral legislation; that the Commission should undertake detailed research into the scale of electoral fraud in the UK. The publication is divided into 5 chapters with appendices; Chapter 1: Introduction and context; Chapter 2: Mandate of the Electoral Commission; Chapter 3: Governance of the Electoral Commission; Chapter 4: Accountability of the Electoral Commission; Chapter 5: Integrity of the electoral process

This book was released on 2012-04-10 with total page 599 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A practical guide to addressing the challenges managers face in implementing and enforcing new anti-bribery regulations The Bribery Act became the law of the land in July 2011. It abolished all existing U.K. anti-bribery laws and replaced them with a suite of new regulations decidedly different and more strenuous than what has come before. Under it companies found noncompliant will be open to billions in penalties and remediation costs, and managers will be open to prosecution if anyone associated with their company commits an offence covered by the act. As employees in nearly all departments will share responsibility for ensuring that adequate procedures are in place and enforced, there is a screaming need for practical, jargon-free guidance on the subject. This book fills that need. It arms managers and advisors with the knowledge and tools they need to implement, communicate and test controls and procedures that not only comply with but exceed the new anti-bribery requirements. It also offers priceless pointers on how to effectively react to bribery allegations if and when they occur. Packed with takeaway tips and checklists that put crucial information at readers' fingertips Written by a chartered accountant and compliance expert, the book offers practical steps managers should take to guarantee company compliance Describes best practices in anti-bribery and corruption compliance in all key business areas, including accounting, sales and marketing, management, legal, and internal auditing

Book HC 938 Voter Engagement In The UK Follow Up

Download or read book HC 938 Voter Engagement In The UK Follow Up written by Great Britain. Parliament. House of Commons. Political and Constitutional Reform Committee and published by The Stationery Office. This book was released on 2015 with total page 88 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Following the Committee's interim report on voter engagement (HCP 323, ISBN 9780215078773), which was published in November 2014, and the substantial public consultation which ran subsequently, the Committee has now brought forward this final report on reengaging the public with elections in the UK. The Committee's key recommendations are: (1) That the Government bring forward plans to target those groups - including young people, British citizens living overseas and people with disabilities - who are currently least likely to be registered to vote; (2) That the Government consider improvements to electoral registration - including making registration automatic, prompting people to register to vote when they access other public services, and registering young people in schools, colleges and universities; (3) That changes to electoral arrangements - including online voting, registering closer to or on Election Day and holding elections at the weekend - be piloted in the next Parliament with a view to making permanent changes to electoral arrangements ahead of the 2020 general election. The Committee recognises that the main reasons for low levels of voter engagement are political, and serious action needs to be taken by political parties, individual politicians and the Government to engage more effectively with the public, and convince them of the value of voting if the public is to be re-engaged not just with elections, but politics more broadly.
