Book excerpt: Mount Desert Island has attracted scoundrels and scandals for more than 100 years. Steady as the tide, every summer brings a rush of summer residents from eastern cities to the island and nothing thrilled them so much as a good scandal. In its heyday, Mount Desert was a wild oasis where the summercators could carry on in comparative privacy. Today, unfortunately, unlike Las Vegas, what happened on Mount Desert doesn’t always stay on Mount Desert. The scandals that were the talk of the picnics and outings that filled the summer visitors' days are brought back to life in Bar Harbor Babylon. Murderers, thieves, cheaters and scammers have all made their mark on the tiny towns of Mount Desert. This book will take the reader on a tour of the misadventures and misfortunes that punctuate the island's wealthy and privileged past.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Annually, Mount Desert Island attracts over three million visitors to Acadia National Park, where lofty mountains, balsam-scented forests, and Maine's granite-lined coast enchant all. Almost bisecting the island is Somes Sound, a Norwegian-style fiord with three villages, Somesville, Southwest Harbor, and Northeast Harbor, nestled around its shores. In the 1850s, about two thousand residents made this pristine area their home, living off the sea and land with few visitors. By World War I, Mount Desert Island had become a destination for summer tourists. Mount Desert Island, with more than two hundred photographs selected from eleven collections, illustrates the transition of Somesville, Southwest Harbor, and Northeast Harbor as they evolved from isolated fishing and shipbuilding hamlets to meccas for Victorian summer visitors, a Who's Who of academia and theology. These images, some of them dating back to the Civil War era, bring to life the people, places, and events that form the history of these communities. From dignitary visits, such as that of the Archbishop of Canterbury, to carefree buckboard rides, Mount Desert Island demonstrates the broad range of rustic experiences and the complex lives of islanders as they forged their living in a changing economy. Both new and old visitors will recognize many of the images, though some will surprise all as they show places that no longer exist. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Robert R. Pyle Our sense of place and community is made up of memories—personal memories of first-hand experience; oral memories that recount our ancestors’ experiences; and f- mal, codified civic memories set down in laws, ceremonies, and rituals. Together they are vital building blocks of citizenship. In a vivid and meaningful way this book p- serves memories relevant to understanding the roots of communities on Mount Desert Island, Maine. The surnames of many of Mount Desert’s earliest settlers are still found in today’s telephone directories. In these families many oral traditions are passed down from generation to generation, building outward from a historical core like the rings of a tree. “Dad used to farm this field,” Fred L. Savage’s great-nephew Don Phillips told me once, gesturing toward an alder growth. “His father grew vegetables for the hotel, and my great-grandfather grew grains. This road used to go right on up over the hill, and they used it to move the cemetery up there from where the hotel is now. ” Describing the field, Don ignores the alders and the towering evergreens beyond them, for in his mind’s eye he sees yellow, waving wheat and rye, bare ground, and a narrow cart track leading up the hill into the distance, on which his ancestors tra- ported the remains of their own forebears to a new resting place. Oral traditions, living memory, set the stage for him, and he accepts the reality of things he has never seen.

Excerpt: Mount Desert Island (often abbreviated MDI), in Hancock County, Maine, is the largest island off the coast of Maine. With an area of 108 square miles (280 km) it is the 52nd largest island in the contiguous United States. Though it is often claimed to be the third largest island on the eastern seaboard of the United States, it is actually second behind Long Island (and ahead of Martha's Vineyard.) The island has a year-round population of approximately 10,000, although it is estimated that two and a half million tourists a year visit Acadia National Park on the island. The island is home to numerous well-known summer colonies such as Northeast Harbor and Bar Harbor. Current notable summer residents include George Mitchell, Tim Robbins, David Rockefeller, Susan Sarandon, and Martha Stewart. Some natives stress the second syllable (de-ZERT), in the French fashion, although many others pronounce it in a fashion similar to the English name of a landscape devoid of vegetation (DEH-zert). French explorer Samuel de Champlain's observation that the summits of the island's mountains were free of vegetation as seen from the sea led him to call the island "ile des Monts Deserts," or island of the Bare Mountains. According to Acadia National Park movies shown to public in park center, the name means "Isle of the lonely mountains" because...
