Book A Panorama Tour of the Northampton State Hospital

Download or read book A Panorama Tour of the Northampton State Hospital written by Mark Roessler and published by . This book was released on 2018-11 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Built in 1856 and demolished in 2006, the Northampton State Hospital (or Old Main, as it was known locally) was designed by pioneers in the field of mental health and treatment. Situated on a hilltop with views of the Connecticut River Valley, the hospital was intended as a retreat where people who were mentally ill could heal in a bucolic setting, working on a farm run by fellow patients. Eventually, though, over-crowding and underfunding threatened the founders' more honorable intentions. Through more than fifty panoramic images taken around and inside the historic building, this book offers a unique opportunity to explore this historic psychiatric hospital again. Wander the grounds at will. Circumnavigate the entire sprawling institution. Go inside. Walk the halls, visit the theater, look inside rooms, peer out windows, and climb the stairs to the attic. Explore what once was.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: I first met Richard through a shared interest in the history of local buildings in Northampton, though I was already familiar with his excellent work on the Culworth Gang. Northampton has a significant number of older attractive buildings which should be appreciated. This book provides an excellent introduction to the history of some of the most interesting and intriguing of these properties. Furthermore, they can be found in a relatively compact and easily accesible area of the town. The book offers an insight into crime and punishment across several centuries. It will give you the incentive to seek out parts of the buildings which are hidden from view and provides an insight into the world of those who work in them today. Richard has presented a clear and entertaining guide together with accompanying photographs and plans. It can be enjoyed at home as well as on self-guided walks of the town. I look forward to seeing people carrying this book while looking up at the many beautiful buildings in Northampton. Mary Pilkington Local Historian.

Book Home Town

  • Author : Tracy Kidder
  • Publisher : Random House
  • Release : 2012-09-05
  • ISBN : 0307826473
  • Pages : 490 pages

Download or read book Home Town written by Tracy Kidder and published by Random House. This book was released on 2012-09-05 with total page 490 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this splendid book, one of America's masters of nonfiction takes us home--into Hometown, U.S.A., the town of Northampton, Massachusetts, and into the extraordinary, and the ordinary, lives that people live there. As Tracy Kidder reveals how, beneath its amiable surface, a small town is a place of startling complexity, he also explores what it takes to make a modern small city a success story. Weaving together compelling stories of individual lives, delving into a rich and varied past, moving among all the levels of Northampton's social hierarchy, Kidder reveals the sheer abundance of life contained within a town's narrow boundaries. Does the kind of small town that many Americans came from, and long for, still exist? Kidder says yes, although not quite in the form we may imagine. A book about civilization in microcosm, Home Town makes us marvel afresh at the wonder of individuality, creativity, and civic order--how a disparate group of individuals can find common cause and a code of values that transforms a place into a home. And this book makes you feel you live there.

Book Northampton State Hospital

Download or read book Northampton State Hospital written by J. Michael Moore and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 2014-10-27 with total page 128 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Northampton State Hospital, established in 1856, was built with the optimistic spirit of humanitarian reform. For many years, it was run by Dr. Pliny Earle, a champion of treatment that combined individualized care with manual labor, religious worship, recreation, and amusement. This vision was overwhelmed as the hospital was called upon to care for ever-larger numbers of people with varying needs. By the mid-20th century, the hospital was an isolated small city, with hundreds of employees caring for more than 2,000 patients in overcrowded and inadequate conditions. It became a nationally important center of political and legal struggle over the role of state hospitals in the care of the mentally ill. After being gradually phased out, the hospital was closed in 1993, and the buildings, though listed in the National Register of Historic Places, were demolished in 2006. This volume brings to life the 135-year story of Northampton State Hospital through beautiful and haunting photographs drawn from the collections of Historic Northampton, the citys local history museum.
