Book North Shore South Shore

Download or read book North Shore South Shore written by Russ Porter and published by Heimburger House Publishing Company. This book was released on 2000-01-01 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this deluxe, all color pictorial, Russ Porter chronicles his 50-year-old coverage of these two interurban stalwarts in more than 220 beautiful, previously-unpublished color photographs. The North Shore originated in 1894 as a single-track Waukegan street car line, eventually running from downtown Chicago to Milwaukee in 2 hours, 40 minutes, with 30 trains a day each way. Some of the more famous trains the line operated were the Electroliners. Introduced in 1941, they were considered some of the finest interurbans ever constructed in North America. The line was abandoned in 1963 for economic reasons. Russ covers the trains, facilities and terminals of both lines in four color photography. The South Shore, America’s last interurban, still operates between downtown Chicago and South Bend, Indiana, and continues to haul passengers as well as freight. Begun in 1908 as the Chicago, Lake Shore & South Bend Railway, the line was originally built to high engineering standards and later rebuilt by Samuel Insull. Over the years the South Shore has been noted for its street-running, its orange cars made by Niles, Standard, Kuhlman and Pullman, and its unique 273-ton Little Joes, among the largest electric locomotives ever made.

Book Boston s South Shore

Download or read book Boston s South Shore written by and published by . This book was released on 2005 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Boston's South Shore is bracketed by two of the oldest settlements in North America: Plymouth to the south, where the Pilgrims landed in 1620, and of course Boston to the north, where the Puritans began building their "city on a hill" a few years later. And there's a whole lot of history in between, as well. As Amy Whorf McGuiggan writes in her foreword to this beautiful portfolio of South Shore images, "The history of our nation-from first footings to Revolutionary War to clipper ships to immigration-is recorded in the annals of South Shore towns. It is a place, still, of ancient Native American names and charming monikers that recall gentler times. It is a place of manicured town greens with whitewashed bandstands, Fourth of July parades, New England-style town meetings, stately old meeting houses and clapboarded Cape Cod and colonial houses surrounded by picket fences. It is a place of wandering roads fashioned from the old byways that had been cow paths, a place where it is easy to imagine how things looked a century ago. It is a place of natural beauty: beaches and harbor islands, pine forests, pristine lakes and cranberry bogs." The South Shore does not have the rocky, storm-tossed coast of Boston's North Shore nor did it have, until recently, the social cachet (some might say snobbery) of the opposite coast. But in Greg Derr's images, collected over two decades of covering the area and its people for the region's leading newspaper, the South Shore is clearly a collection of fascinating communities, each of them unique, with a common heritage to treasure.

Book Diners of the North Shore

Download or read book Diners of the North Shore written by Gary Thomas and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 2002 with total page 138 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the time the first handful of night lunch wagons served up their simple fare on the streets of the North Shore in 1890, residents from every social and economic standing have frequented these familiar beacons of hospitality and their descendants, the diners. Over the course of the sixty years that followed, the area's manufacturing, transportation, and recreation centers provided the hungry clientele who helped spur the metamorphosis of the humble lunch wagon into the sleek, efficient, and friendly eatery known as the diner. Diners of the North Shore is a fascinating collection of many previously unpublished images from the golden age of the diner. Bearing names such as Hesperus in Gloucester, Lafayette in Salem, and Suntaug in Peabody, these eat-on-the-run oases provided their customers with not only a square meal but also an atmosphere as welcoming as one's kitchen. From the primitive Night Owl lunch wagon to the art deco-inspired Sterling Streamliner, Diners of the North Shore showcases each diner's unique character, along with the colorful personalities who ran them.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: They are the suburban jewels that crown one of the world's premier cities. Evanston, Wilmette, Kenilworth, Winnetka, Glencoe, Highland Park, Lake Forest, Lake Bluff: together, they comprise the North Shore of Chicago, a social registry of eight communities that serve as a genteel enclave of affluence, culture, and high society. Historian Michael H. Ebner explains the origins and evolution of the North Shore as a distinctive region. At the same time, he tells the paradoxical story of how these suburbs, with their common heritage, mutual values, and shared aspirations, still preserve their distinctly separate identities. Embedded in this history are important lessons about the uneasy development of the American metropolis.
