Book excerpt: Human-Centered Built Environment Heritage Preservation addresses the question of how a human-centred conservation approach can and should change practice. For the most part, there are few answers to this question because professionals in the heritage conservation field do not use social science research methodologies to manage cultural landscapes, assess historical significance and inform the treatment of building and landscape fabric. With few exceptions, only academic theorists have explored these topics while failing to offer specific, usable guidance on how the social sciences can actually be used by heritage professionals. In exploring the nature of a human-centred heritage conservation practice, we explicitly seek a middle ground between the academy and practice, theory and application, fabric and meanings, conventional and civil experts, and orthodox and heterodox ideas behind practice and research. We do this by positioning this book in a transdisciplinary space between these dichotomies as a way to give voice (and respect) to multiple perspectives without losing sight of our goal that heritage conservation practice should, fundamentally, benefit all people. We believe that this approach is essential for creating an emancipated built heritage conservation practice that must successfully engage very different ontological and epistemological perspectives.

Funded by a grant from the New Jersey Historic Preservation Office and the National Park Service, these guidelines provide an easy-to-use reference document for residents, architects, and contractors to plan projects and facilitate the HPCs design review process. The Design Guidelines are intended to further the appreciation of the architecture, setting, and history of Glen Ridge, to help ensure consistency in local decision-making, and to benefit property owners by clarifying community expectations. These Design Guidelines offer information on the rehabilitation of existing buildings, including new additions and new construction, to offer a common body of knowledge for all participants in the review process, including Commission members.The HPC recognized that applying design guidelines is often challenging, especially in Glen Ridge, where there is so much variety in the architecture. These Design Guidelines are intended to codify the objective basis for the HPC's decisions and help increase public awareness of historically appropriate design. However, the Design Guidelines do not offer all of the answers or solutions to a homeowner or design team as good architectural design cannot be achieved only by applying a set of rules. The challenge for both the homeowner and the HPC member is knowing how to apply the Design Guidelines to make sound judgments that will help preserve the architectural character of Glen Ridge while also allowing expressions of change and adaptation.

The pioneer "Father of Nashville," Gen. James Robertson named it "Rich Land" and claimed it for his homestead. Natural springs, rich soil, and abundant game made it valuable to early Native Americans, pioneers, and plantation owners. The 1887 grand opening of the area as a residential development included the firing of cannon and a brass band. Envisioned as an independent satellite city of Nashville, the area became home to businesses, schools, grocery stores, and churches. Businesses that started here included one of the most famous makers of jeans and one of the most famous makers of doughnuts. The deadliest train accident in American history happened here in 1918, a catastrophic head-on collision between ponderous iron behemoths at a combined speed of 110 miles per hour.
