Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Improved Earth is a history of the making of 'abstract spaces of modernity' in the setting of the Canadian prairies, particularly rural Saskatchewan, from 1869 to 1944. Rod Bantjes demonstrates how three interrelated projectsstate formation, agrarian class formation, and the transformation of the environmentwere conceived in spatial terms and employed competing visions of spatial possibility. Bantjes proposes that the prairies be thought of as a site of modernity, and makes a case for viewing prairie farmers as 'modernists' who not only embraced, but took an active role in the making of modernity. Indeed, many of the questions that excited the imaginations of prairie politicians and reformers are alive today: the ecological and social value of 'localization' in agricultural production; the potentials for 'community' maintained and linked by transportation and communications technologies; and the possibilities of democratic decentralization within large translocal networks. The first systematic treatment of the spatial dimensions of the colonization of the prairie west, Improved Earth is a unique and thorough study certain to provoke new debates about the way space and time are imagined.

  • Author : Michael Lansing

Download or read book Insurgent Democracy written by Michael Lansing and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2015-11-06 with total page 366 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The farmer-led insurgency known as the Nonpartisan League thrived between 1915 and 1924, going so far as to take control of the North Dakota state legislature. Challenging entrenched political and corporate interests in America and Canada alike, the League and its grassroots populism had particular influence in the West. League leaders developed local communal financial and industrial institutions, while resisting national and international speculators and investors. Michael Lansing shows that the League was not a spasm of populist rage that burned itself out, nor is it a historical footnote. Rather, it is an instructive and even cautionary exemplar of how populist movements take shape under particular social conditions and across specific geographies, how they increase their influence, and how they die out. These are vital topics today, given the prominence of populist and pseudo-populist movements. Lansing shows that the League was responding less to government policies than to economic threats and transformations, much as today's movements do.

Book excerpt: Although the years 1921-48 saw a gradual strengthening of the so-called 'special relationship' between the United States and Great Britain, anglophobia remained a potent force in American political life throughout that period. In Twisting the Lion's Tail , John E. Moser examines this phenomenon, showing how traditional American images of King George III and the redcoats were revived by immigrants, farmers and other groups hoping to advance an anti-British agenda.

Book Down and Out on the Family Farm

Download or read book Down and Out on the Family Farm written by Michael Johnston Grant and published by U of Nebraska Press. This book was released on 2002-01-01 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Focusing on the Great Plains states of Kansas, Nebraska, North Dakota, and South Dakota between 1929 and 1945, Down and Out on the Family Farm examines small familyøfarmers and the Rural Rehabilitation Program designed to help them. Historian Michael Johnston Grant reveals the tension between economic forces that favored large-scale agriculture and political pressure that championed family farms, and the results of that clash. ø The Great Depression and the drought of the 1930s lay bare the long-term economic instability of the rural Plains. The New Deal introduced the Rural Rehabilitation Program to assist lower- to middle-income farmers throughout the country. This program combined low-interest loans with managerial advice. However, these efforts were not enough to compete with the growing scale of agriculture or to counter the recurring drought of the era. Regional conservatism, environmental factors, and fiscal constraints limited the federal aid offered to thousands of families. ø Grant provides extensive primary source research from government documents, as well as letters, newspaper editorials, and case studies that focus on individual lives and fortunes. He examines who these families were and what their farms looked like, and he sheds light on the health problems and other personal concerns that interfered with the economic viability of many farms. The result is a provocative study that gives a human face to the hardships and triumphs of modern agriculture.
