Book excerpt: Excerpt from North Country Diaries: Second Series Of the diaries and similar documents printed in this volume some are already known to the student of local history. The Journal of Sir William Brereton, which is perhaps the most valuable of the series, formed the first volume of the Chetham Society's publications and was reprinted in Richardson's Imprints and Reprints of Rare Tracts in 1844. But as both of these editions have become rare, the Journal may very fitly find a place in the present series, the more so as Sir Philip II. B. Grey-Egerton, the present owner of the MS., has permitted a fresh transcript to be made for the Surtees Society. The fate of the original diary of Mark Browell is unknown, but. it was copied for the same series of Richardson's Reprints. The family records of Mark Akenside were contributed by Mr. Richard Welford, M.A., to that valuable but. short-lived repository of local information, Northern Notes and Queries. Of Warburton's letters a few copies have been struck off by the Bishop of Durham for private circulation; and large extracts from John Dawson's Diary may be found in the Proceedings of the Newcastle Society of Antiquaries. So far as is known, the other documents are now printed for the first time. Although Sir William Brereton's description of Edinburgh ill 1GG5 is not flattering, he displays both candour and discernment. He seems to have been especially interested in salt works and in decoys for duck. Jacob Bee's Chronicle comprises those parts of the original MS. which are not. given in his diary printed in Six North Country Diaries. It deals for the most part with humble and unimportant people, but it may interest the inhabitants of the city and neighbourhood of Durham, as will Bishop Warburlou's caustic letters. The Journal of Bishop Pocoeke will appeal to a wider circle, containing, as it does several otherwise unrecorded Roman Inscriptions; while the diary of John Dawson, kept during a time when he was an active and conscientious militia officer, may amuse those interested in military affairs. Book Forgotten Children

Download or read book Forgotten Children written by Linda A. Pollock and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1983-11-24 with total page 354 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 'The history of childhood is an area so full of errors, distortion and misinterpretation that I thought it vital, if progress were to be made, to supply a clear review of the information on childhood contained in such sources as diaries and autobiographies.' Dr Pollock's statement in her Preface will startle readers who have not questioned the validity of recent theories on the evolution of childhood and the treatment of children, theories which see a movement from a situation where the concept of childhood was almost absent, and children were cruelly treated, to our present western recognition that children are different and should be treated with love and affection. Linda examines this thesis particularly through the close and careful analysis of some hundreds of English and American primary sources. Through these sources, she has been able to reconstruct, probably for the first time, a genuine picture of childhood in the past, and it is a much more humane and optimistic picture than the current stereotype. Her book contains a mass of novel and original material on child-rearing practices and the relations of parents and children, and sets this in the wider framework of developmental psychology, socio-biology and social anthropology. Forgotten Children admirably fulfils the aim of its author. In the face of this scholarly and elegant account of the continuity of parental care, few will now be able to argue for dramatic transformations in the twentieth century.

Book Unquiet Lives

    Book Details:
  • Author : Joanne Bailey
  • Publisher : Cambridge University Press
  • Release : 2003-07-17
  • ISBN : 1139439936
  • Pages : 262 pages

Download or read book Unquiet Lives written by Joanne Bailey and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2003-07-17 with total page 262 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Based on vivid court records and newspaper advertisements, this 2003 book is a pioneering account of the expectations and experiences of married life among the middle and labouring ranks in the long eighteenth century. Its original methodology draws attention to the material life of marriage, which has long been dominated by theories of emotional shifts or fashionable accounts of spouses' gendered, oppositional lives. Thus it challenges preconceptions about authority in the household, by showing the extent to which husbands depended upon their wives' vital economic activities: household management and child care. Not only did this forge co-dependency between spouses, it undermined men's autonomy. The power balance within marriage is further revised by evidence that the sexual double standard was not rigidly applied in everyday life. The book also shows that ideas about adultery and domestic violence evolved in the eighteenth century, influenced by new models of masculinity and femininity.
