Book Southern Railway s Historic Spencer Shops

Download or read book Southern Railway s Historic Spencer Shops written by Larry K. Neal, Jr. and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 2011 with total page 132 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Southern Railway's Spencer Shops was a vibrant part of the Southeast's transportation network for more than 80 years. Starting in the late 1800s and continuing until its closure in 1979, the shop complex and its accompanying yards, transfer sheds, and stockyards constituted a major force in the economy of North Carolina and Southern states. The trains that the shop prepared were hauling everyday freight--Appalachian lumber, Piedmont textiles, and perishables--or were famous passenger trains like the Crescent, the Peach Queen, and many more. Others were more notable, such as the locomotive in the folk ballad "The Wreck of the Old 97" or President Roosevelt's funeral train in 1945. The Spencer Shops was an industrial power whose prominence today is celebrated in its continued role as the home to the North Carolina Transportation Museum. This book tells the story of how Spencer Shops came to be, its role in transportation, and its continued use today as a North Carolina Historic Site.

Book North Carolina Transportation Museum

Download or read book North Carolina Transportation Museum written by Alan Coleman and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 2018 with total page 96 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Established in 1896, Spencer Shops was the Southern Railway's largest steam locomotive repair facility. After five decades of providing thousands of jobs to craftsmen and laborers, Spencer Shops and its company town became a victim of technology as diesel-electrics replaced steam locomotives. By August 1960, Spencer Shops had all but ceased operation, its workforce dwindling to a level 95 percent smaller than it had been in the early 1950s. Even as rust and pigeons ruled the largely abandoned complex, a dedicated group of state officials and railroad enthusiasts saw its promise as a state historic site. After years of hard work, Spencer Shops experienced its rebirth with the creation of the North Carolina Transportation Museum (NCTM) in 1977. Today, the impressive facility celebrates not only the rich history of Spencer but also the wide array of transportation history in the Tar Heel State."--Publisher.

Book Southern Railway s Spencer Shops

Download or read book Southern Railway s Spencer Shops written by Duane Galloway and published by TLC Publishing (VA). This book was released on 1998-05-15 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Curt Tillotson, Jr. takes a close and personal look at the Southern Railway through his own photography in the period 1960-1982, with some photos from others going back to about 1950. He treats every class of diesel owned by the Southern from beginning to end. Some "roster" or "portrait" type photos are included but the bulk of the book comprises superb action photography with the locomotives and trains in a variety of settings. His extended captions capture the feel of the era of transition. Anyone interested in railroads of the Southeastern United States will be interested in this volume. Southern Railway hasn't been as well covered by books as some lines, but this book seeks to fill that gap in many ways, in the era of dieselization.

Book North Carolina Transportation Museum Foundation Power House Restoration

Download or read book North Carolina Transportation Museum Foundation Power House Restoration written by North Carolina Transportation Museum and published by . This book was released on 2005* with total page 22 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The old Southern Railway power plant, nicknamed the Power House, at the Historic Spencer Shops was originally constructed in 1896. Two additions were built in 1905 and 1926. In 1962, the Southern Railway shut down the Power House due to the dieselization of its fleet and because there was little use for the amount of power generated by the facility. It is now recognized that the power plant needs to be restored, both to provide space for the electro-mechanical equipment to serve other buildings on the site, and as space for static display of the machinery, boilers, and associated equipment that "powered" the site. The report details the work completed as of April 2004, and plans (updated on September 12, 2005) for the next two phases of the restoration and conservation of this historic site.

Book A History of Transportation in Western North Carolina Trails Roads Rails and Air

Download or read book A History of Transportation in Western North Carolina Trails Roads Rails and Air written by Terry Ruscin and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 2016-10-31 with total page 265 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Traveling across the treacherous and diverse landscape of western North Carolina is a challenge historically met with human ingenuity. Mountain traces of Native Americans, dusty stagecoach routes and vital railroads lined the region. Asheville installed the state's first electric streetcars. Intrepid young men and women continued North Carolina's aviation legacy. The Buncombe Turnpike helped tame the Blue Ridge Mountains, allowing livestock drives to reach markets in South Carolina. Author Terry Ruscin reveals the visionaries and risk-takers who paved the way to the "Land of the Sky" in a wondrous examination of western North Carolina transportation history.

Download or read book Right to Ride written by Blair L. M. Kelley and published by Univ of North Carolina Press. This book was released on 2010-05-03 with total page 278 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Through a reexamination of the earliest struggles against Jim Crow, Blair Kelley exposes the fullness of African American efforts to resist the passage of segregation laws dividing trains and streetcars by race in the early Jim Crow era. Right to Ride chronicles the litigation and local organizing against segregated rails that led to the Plessy v. Ferguson decision in 1896 and the streetcar boycott movement waged in twenty-five southern cities from 1900 to 1907. Kelley tells the stories of the brave but little-known men and women who faced down the violence of lynching and urban race riots to contest segregation. Focusing on three key cities--New Orleans, Richmond, and Savannah--Kelley explores the community organizations that bound protestors together and the divisions of class, gender, and ambition that sometimes drove them apart. The book forces a reassessment of the timelines of the black freedom struggle, revealing that a period once dismissed as the age of accommodation should in fact be characterized as part of a history of protest and resistance.
