Book excerpt: In Illinois, the one-hundred-foot Cahokia Mound spreads impressively across sixteen acres, and as many as ten thousand more mounds dot the Ohio River Valley alone. The Mound Builders traces the speculation surrounding these monuments and the scientific excavations which uncovered the history and culture of the ancient Americans who built them. The mounds were constructed for religious and secular purposes some time between 1000 B.C. and 1000 A.D., and they have prompted curiosity and speculation from very early times. European settlers found them evidence of some ancient and glorious people. Even as eminent an American as Thomas Jefferson joined the controversy, though his conclusions—that the mounds were actually cemeteries of ancient Indians—remained unpopular for nearly a century. Only in the late 19th century, as Smithsonian Institution investigators developed careful methodologies and reliable records, did the period of scientific investigation of the mounds and their builders begin. This is partly due to the multi-disciplinary aspect of the topic causing indexing of radiocarbon dating literature to be scattered in a variety of abstracting services and scientific fields and also partly due to the rapid and constant growth of the literature. This makes searching for literature on the general topic of radiocarbon dating a very cumbersome task. Radiocarbon dating appears as an indexed subject only since 1965, however current literature shows that early works are still widely referred to, indicating their importance as foundation and framework for new research. Thus the selected range of the bibliography, 1947-1968, fills the gap not covered by indexing services or computer information retrieval. This bibliography lists over 2800 articles (in the English language), and the bibliography is divided into 14 chapters. Within the chapters, the entries are in alphabetical order by title. The bibliography also has three indexes which offer access to material by author, subject, and geographical names.

And as they have lately been found in the North west, they have thus a much more northern limit than was at first thought, while the southern limit is the Gulf of Mexico.Having seen only a few mounds in Illinois, Indiana and Kentucky, I must confine my paper to those found in the State of Ohio, where, during a residence of seventeen months, I made the closest investigation my time and duties permitted. In Ohio, the number of mounds, including enclosures of different kinds, is estimated at about though it requires the greatest care to distinguish between the mounds proper and those subsequently erected by the Indians. In some parts they are very close together, which is strong evidence that these regions were densely populated.
