Book The Terrible But Unfinished Story of Norodom Sihanouk King of Cambodia

Download or read book The Terrible But Unfinished Story of Norodom Sihanouk King of Cambodia written by Häl_ne Cixous and published by U of Nebraska Press. This book was released on 1994-01-01 with total page 268 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: No contemporary French feminist has made a bigger impact in America than Häl_ne Cixous. Brilliant, bold, and combative, author of numerous novels and a gargantuan study of James Joyce, and sponsor of a series of notorious seminars at the Universityøof Paris about women's writing, she has exploited the roles of femme fatale and maitresse d'education in a career that has been spectacularly defiant and productive. Sihanouk is one of Cixous's most ambitious projects: the dramatic portrayal of the conflicts between old and new, East and West, North and South, religion and politics. At its center is the figure of Norodom Sihanouk. Vain when a prince, as king Sihanouk discovered his responsibility to his country and came to embody Cambodia. He used every means to keep his country growing, healthy, and out of the wars of Southeast Asia that consumed Laos and Vietnam. Cixous recognized in Sihanouk a historical figure as fascinating as a tragic king in Shakespeare: a man of uncommon intelligence on whom his country's history pivoted, a man placed by fate into a world of bad choices and surrounded by powerful and relentless antagonists. But Sihanouk gave Cixous something more: a king who is indisputably modern, who has read and loved Shakespeare, and whose story continues. First published in 1985, the play begins with Sihanouk's abdication in 1955 and ends with his arrest by the Khmer Rouge two decades later. The destiny of an entire country unfolds through the fifty characters who appear on stage.

Book Warrior Prince

Download or read book Warrior Prince written by Harish C. Mehta and published by . This book was released on 2001 with total page 260 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the first biography of Prince Norodom Ranariddh, arguably the most successful of Cambodia's King Sihanouk's children. Part royal chronicle, part reportage, it traces the life of Ranariddh from birth, through tragedy to triumphant rise as First Prime Minister, and from his downfall when he was overthrown, to his resurrection. It offers deep insights into the character of Ranariddh and that of his father: how Sihanouk repeatedly let down his son, while offering him the affection of an aloof parent. Based on many hours of interviews, a first hand editorially independent biography of Prince Norodom Ranariddh Sihanouk -- a leader whose public life differs so very greatly from his private one.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: King Norodom's Head deals with sights in and about Phnom Penh, Cambodia's capital city that are rarely - if at all - dealt with in guidebooks and other works about the city. This is not, therefore, a guidebook with walking tours of the town. The reader will find no detailed descriptions of the Royal Palace, the National Museum, or the Khmer Rouge's infamous S-21 detention-cum-torture centre, though all these places make appearances in the book. Rather, the reader will learn among other things like the whereabouts of the gold of King Ang Duong and of Madame Chum's infamous opium den, the story behind the mysterious Frenchman buried on Wat Phnom's hill, and the secret reason behind Jackie Kennedy's 1967 trip to Cambodia. Each chapter centres on a site that can be visited, someplace or something that can be seen and often touched. The hope is that together these chapters will give the reader an appreciation of a number of the more obscure or little reported places in the city and of the stories and history associated with them. If this book encourages visitors to spend an extra day or so in the city and if it inspires residents to stroll their city's streets more than they normally would, it will have achieved its purpose. 200+ maps/illustrations For sale only in the U.S., its dependencies, Canada, and Mexico

Download or read book Sihanouk written by Milton Osborne and published by University of Hawaii Press. This book was released on 1994-03-01 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1941 Norodom Sihanouk ascended the Cambodian throne, supported by the French with the intent that he be their puppet king. Milton Osborne traces the complete background leading to this event, and then follows Sihanouk's remarkable growth to political maturity: his transformation from a dilettante king to a vigorous and sometimes ruthless politician. Fully acknowledging his remarkable energy, the book shows how the early years of Sihanouk's successes turned sour as, unwilling to share responsibility, he gradually alienated politicians on both the left and the right. Convinced that he alone knew what was best for Cambodia, his repression of dissent became more vicious and led finally to his overthrow in 1970.

Book Dancing in Shadows

Download or read book Dancing in Shadows written by Benny Widyono and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2008 with total page 360 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This fascinating book recounts the remarkable tale of a career UN official caught in the turmoil of international and domestic politics swirling around Cambodia after the fall of the Khmer Rouge. First as a member of the UN transitional authority and then as a personal envoy to the UN secretary-general, Benny Widyono re-creates the fierce battles for power centering on King Norodom Sihanouk, the Khmer Rouge, and Prime Minister Hun Sen. He also sets the international context, arguing that great-power geopolitics throughout the Cold War and post-Cold War eras triggered and sustained a tragedy of enormous proportions in Cambodia for decades, leading to a flawed peace process and the decline of Sihanouk as a dominant political figure. Putting a human face on international operations, this book will be invaluable reading for anyone interested in Southeast Asia, the role of international peacekeeping, and the international response to genocide.

It lies toward the southern extremity of the main body of that peninsula, its limited sea-coast abutting upon the Gulf of Siam. Its restricted surface is divided almost in equal parts by the mighty stream which bears its name. This great river, also called the Mekong, finds its sources among the distant mountains of China proper, and empties its waters into the sea upon the coast of Cochin China. Book The Consul and the Cambodian King

Download or read book The Consul and the Cambodian King written by Colin Pratt and published by . This book was released on 2016-11-01 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A brief synopsis of the memoirs of Colin Pratt and his working relationship with Prince, later King, Norodom Sihanouk of Cambodia, in a book of two parts. The first part is a basic memoir of the life to date of Colin Pratt, and the second part is a record of the strong relationship that developed between Sihanouk and Pratt beginning in the year 1966 and ending with Sihanouk's death in 2012. Pratt experienced a wide range of experiences and occupations prior to visiting Cambodia, during a fact-finding tour through the Vietnam War. He was particularly intrigued at the situation of a small and peaceful Cambodian kingdom ruled by one man in the midst of a regional war of considerable savagery and destruction. Drawn into assisting the Cambodians in creating means of income and industry that would quickly assist the development and ability to survive, Pratt travelled widely, studying the country's economy and instituting the means whereby rapid national income and development projects could be derived and so became, over the years, a firm friend and confidant of the then Prince Norodom Sihanouk.Following the coup that ousted the prince in 1970, in the subsequent rise and fall of Khmer Rouge, Pratt worked with the prince to establish the guerilla force, Armee Nationale Sihanoukiste, on the Thailand border to fight the invasion of Cambodia by the Vietnamese. The friendly relationship of two men continued up to the death of the then king, Norodom Sihanouk in 2012.
