Book excerpt: The Report on Tobacco Control of the Region of the Americas 2022 presents the progress of the implementation of the MPOWER technical package during the period of 2018-2021. While there has been significant progress noted, the report also highlights the gaps in the acceleration of the tobacco control agenda both at the global and regional levels. Collectively, 26 of the 35 Member States within the Region are implementing at least one measure of the MPOWER technical package at the highest level of application, accounting for 96% of the Region's population being protected from the harms of tobacco. The report also details how the global COVID-19 pandemic is seen as being one of the most important threats to the tobacco control agenda. The increasing development and accessibility of the category of novel and emerging tobacco and nicotine products add to the challenge of accelerating tobacco control both globally and regionally. Yet, despite these obstacles, the Region of the Americas now ranks the second lowest prevalence of tobacco consumption globally and a 100% smoke-free South America.

Actualmente la industria de alimentos procesados en México está gobernada por las grandes empresas multinacionales las cuales ocupan menos del 1% del total de unidades económicas de esta categoría. El 99% restante son micro, pequeñas y medianas empresas (MIPYMES). A pesar de que las MIPYMES conforman la mayor parte de la industria, la mayor remuneración se la llevan las empresas grandes. Bajo este contexto, gran parte del problema que enfrentan las micro y pequeñas se localiza en la falta de cultura de calidad y atributos de calidad en el producto y procesos que finalmente se ve reflejado en la carencia de ventajas competitivas en los productos presentados a los consumidores. Este proyecto se enfocará en la industria de productos alimenticios procesados, con el fin de crear una herramienta que permita y facilite a los productores de micro y pequeñas empresas a desarrollar productos que aseguren la inocuidad para que con ello puedan participar en nuevos mercados. La herramienta propuesta se desarrollará a partir de los requisitos establecidos en la NOM 251- SSA1-2009 de Prácticas de higiene para el proceso de alimentos, bebidas o suplementos alimenticios que se exhibe dentro de las normas mexicanas que se despliega con carácter obligatorio dentro del Diario Oficial de la Federación para los productores de alimentos.
