Download or read book Developmental Theories Through the Life Cycle written by Sonia G. Austrian and published by Columbia University Press. This book was released on 2008 with total page 444 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this bestselling textbook, contributors describe theories of normal human development advanced by such pioneers as Sigmund Freud, Anna Freud, Jean Piaget, Nancy Chodorow, Daniel Levinson, Erik Erikson, and Margaret Mahler. Beginning with infancy, toddlerhood, and preschool, each chapter examines corresponding ideologies concerning maturation and development in middle childhood, adolescence, adulthood, and old age, while acknowledging that no one theory can encompass all aspects of human development. In-depth analyses of the psychology and sociology of development provide educators and practitioners with insights into the specific social contexts of human behavior and help identify variables and deviations. This second edition features up-to-date empirical information, including additional studies on diverse populations, and a new chapter on attachment theory, a growing area of interest for today's clinicians.

Download or read book Adoption Life Cycle written by Elinor B. Rosenberg and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2010-06-15 with total page 234 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Adoption remains a subject of intense controversy. Some groups call for the abolition of adoption altogether as an outmoded social institution that fails to meet the needs of any of the members involved, while others propose major changes in our social and legal systems. Yet few reformers have been able to reach a consensus, or to provide concrete solutions to the problems they describe. In this first book to take into account all the core issues surrounding the adoption debate, Elisor Rosenberg throws light on what adoption means for all three members of the triad—adoptees, adoptive parents, and birth parents—at every stage of life. Drawing on extensive case examples, she examines the ways in which the triad members’ lives interact with and affect each other in the course of their lifetimes, and offers direct, practical advice on handling the issues and conflicts that often arise. The continued mourning of birth parents, the difficult behavior of a child who tests the bounds of an adoptive parent’s love and acceptance, and the numerous developmental hurdles of adoptive parents are just some of the issues which Rosenberg addresses.
Download or read book Life Cycle Assessment written by Ralph E Horne and published by CSIRO PUBLISHING. This book was released on 2009-03-20 with total page 188 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) has developed in Australia over the last 20 years into a technique for systematically identifying the resource flows and environmental impacts associated with the provision of products and services. Interest in LCA has accelerated alongside growing demand to assess and reduce greenhouse gas emissions across different manufacturing and service sectors. Life Cycle Assessment focuses on the reflective practice of LCA, and provides critical insight into the technique and how it can be used as a problem-solving tool. It describes the distinctive strengths and limitations of LCA, with an emphasis on practice in Australia, as well as the application of LCA in waste management, the built environment, water and agriculture. Supported by examples and case studies, each chapter investigates contemporary challenges for environmental assessment and performance improvement in these key sectors. LCA methodologies are compared to the emerging climate change mitigation policy and practice techniques, and the uptake of ‘quick’ LCA and management tools are considered in the light of current and changing environmental agendas. The authors also debate the future prospects for LCA technique and applications.
Download or read book Family Medicine written by J. L. Buckingham and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-06-29 with total page 1399 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: JOHN S. MILLIS In 1966 the Citizens Commission on Graduate Medical Education observed that the explosive growth in biomedical science and the consequent increase in medical skill and technology of the twentieth century had made it possible for physicians to respond to the episodes of illness of patients with an ever-increasing effectiveness, but that the increase in knowledge and technology had forced most physicians to concentrate upon a disease entity, an organ or organ system, or a particular mode of diagnosis or therapy. As a result there had been a growing lack of continuing and comprehensive patient care. The Commission expressed the opinion that "Now, in order to bring medicine's enhanced diagnostic and therapeutic powers fully to the benefit of society, it is necessary to have many physicians who can put medicine together again. "! The Commission proceeded to recommend the education and training of sub stantial numbers of Primary Physicians who would, by assuming primary responsi bility for the patient's welfare in sickness and in health, provide continuing and comprehensive health care to the citizens of the United States. In 1978 it is clear that the recommendation has been accepted by the public, the medical profession, and medical education. There has been a vigorous response in the development of family medicine and in the fields of internal medicine, pediatrics, and obstetrics. One is particularly impressed by the wide acceptance on the part of medical students of the concept of the primary physician. Dr. John S.

Download or read book Growing Up Gay in Urban India written by Ketki Ranade and published by Springer. This book was released on 2018-05-09 with total page 181 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores the growing up experiences of gay and lesbian individuals within their homes, schools, neighbourhoods, among friends; and their journeys of finding themselves and their communities while living in a heterosexually constructed society. It is based on an exploratory, qualitative study with young gay and lesbian persons in two cities of Maharashtra, India and employs a life course perspective. The author has written this book from two primary loci: those of a mental health professional and activist, and a queer feminist activist. Through layered narratives and psychosocial analyses of experiences that are simultaneously attentive to subjectivities and to social and interpersonal processes, the author provides insights into the lives of children who grow up feeling ‘different’ from their siblings, peers and friends, and receive constant messages about correct ways of being and expression from their parents, teachers, friends and counsellors/doctors; the unique challenges to growing up as gay or lesbian, alongside complex processes involved in the decision of ‘coming out’; and the experience of meeting others like oneself, forming intimate, romantic relationships, bonds of friendship, political solidarity, families of choice and so on. In this book, the author employs a critical stance towards mainstream life span development studies, developmental psychology, child development and childhood studies that make universal assumptions of heteronormativity and gender binarism. This book is of interest to a wide readership, from psychologists, mental health and human rights scholars, to scholars of youth and childhood studies, gender studies, cultural studies, social work, sociology and anthropology.
