Samuel R. Hall belongs the credit of being the father of normal schools in America, the first to establish on this continent a school for the Special training and prepara tion oi teachers. Schools oi this kind were ad vocated as early as 1816 by Professor Denison Olmstead while a tutor in Yale College, in an address delivered on the state of education in Connecticut, in which he endeavored to show that the great defect in our school education was the ighorance and incompetency of the teachers, and the only remedy was a seminary for their special instruction and training for the work of their profession. Other gentlemen deeply interested in the cause 01 popular educa tion, had from time to time before the establish ment of our state normal schools in 1838 made similar suggestions, and Professor Ticknor in the North American Review [or 1827 advocated the same. Book The American State Normal School

Download or read book The American State Normal School written by C. Ogren and published by Springer. This book was released on 2005-04-30 with total page 310 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The American State Normal School is the first comprehensive history of the state normal schools in the United States. Although nearly two-hundred state colleges and regional universities throughout the U.S. began as 'normal' schools, the institutions themselves have buried their history, and scholars have largely overlooked them. As these institutions later became state colleges and/or regional universities, they distanced themselves from the low status of elementary-literally erasing physical evidence of their normal-school past. In doing so, they buried the rich history of generations of students for whom attending normal school was an enriching, and sometimes life-changing experience. Focusing on these students, the first wave of 'non-traditional' students in higher education, The American State Normal School is a much-needed re-examination of the state normal school. This book was subject of an annual History of Education Society panel for best new books in the field.

Public acceptance of state school systems, Kaestle argues, was encouraged by the people's commitment to republican government, by their trust in Protestant values, and by the development of capitalism. Book A History of Education in Kentucky

Download or read book A History of Education in Kentucky written by William E. Ellis and published by University Press of Kentucky. This book was released on 2011-06-17 with total page 546 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Kentucky is nationally renowned for horses, bourbon, rich natural resources, and unfortunately, hindered by a deficient educational system. Though its reputation is not always justified, in national rankings for grades K-12 and higher education, Kentucky consistently ranks among the lowest states in education funding, literacy, and student achievement. In A History of Education in Kentucky, William E. Ellis illuminates the successes and failures of public and private education in the commonwealth since its settlement. Ellis demonstrates how political leaders in the nineteenth century created a culture that devalued public education and refused to adequately fund it. He also analyzes efforts by teachers and policy makers to enact vital reforms and establish adequate, equal education, and discusses ongoing battles related to religious instruction, integration, and the Kentucky Education Reform Act (KERA). A History of Education in Kentucky is the only up-to-date, single-volume history of education in the commonwealth. Offering more than mere policy analysis, this comprehensive work tells the story of passionate students, teachers, and leaders who have worked for progress from the 1770s to the present day. Despite the prevailing pessimism about education in Kentucky, Ellis acknowledges signs of a vibrant educational atmosphere in the state. By advocating a better understanding of the past, Ellis looks to the future and challenges Kentuckians to avoid historic failures and build on their successes.
